Apple has a "What the heck is Mastodon?" guide sitting in the App Store. Servers, the three timelines, alt text, content warnings. They compare it to email. Thousands of independent servers, you pick one, you can talk to everyone on the others, and you can move house later without losing your contacts. I have explained this to people maybe two dozen times and never once that cleanly. I usually lose them around the word "instance", which is a word nobody outside this place has ever needed. Anyway. Nice to see it written down properly by someone with reach, even if the apps list has clearly been refreshed more often than the text. Excited to be teaching the 5th edition of the Tunnel training tomorrow. In 4 days there be some shiny new sovereign VPNs in the wild, running atop geothermal energy in Iceland, each capable of supporting hundreds of people. One small step toward re-asserting that the basic right to privacy ought not be left to private enterprises. a big reminder that FOSS apps can still be centralized

some simple questions to ask:

  • if the app connects to a server, is that serverside part proprietary?
  • does the app have hard-coded servers, or can the user change them?
  • does the app promote running small instances?

@jon@social.vivaldi.net @h4890@merovingian.club My experience within my IRL circles is that people do not generally care enough directly about these issues to make any changes. However, they do care about social, political and other issues affecting their world, nation and daily life... so if you wait until they complain about any of these issues and then clearly link their issues to one of our solutions involving #privacy, #decentralisation, #digitalsovereignty, #opensource, #ethicaltech, etc. in a subtle and not-pushy way, you can have a good chance of success. Using this strategy, I managed to persuade all of my family members to #gnuLinux, and all of my family and most of my extended family + in-laws that I'm in contact with are now on #DeltaChat. @jon@social.vivaldi.net @Vivaldi@social.vivaldi.net Btw, would be great to have a light stripped-down version of #Vivaldi without the any of the proprietary UI bits for people who prefer Open Source. You could even make it a paid offering like some other browsers. #FreeSoftware
