Apple has a "What the heck is Mastodon?" guide sitting in the App Store. Servers, the three timelines, alt text, content warnings. They compare it to email. Thousands of independent servers, you pick one, you can talk to everyone on the others, and you can move house later without losing your contacts. I have explained this to people maybe two dozen times and never once that cleanly. I usually lose them around the word "instance", which is a word nobody outside this place has ever needed. Anyway. Nice to see it written down properly by someone with reach, even if the apps list has clearly been refreshed more often than the text. Good read on what is coming in PHP 8.6, out November 19. Partial function application is the one I keep rereading. str_replace(' ', '-', ?) gives you a closure with the rest prefilled, and it finally makes the pipe operator from 8.5 pleasant to use. Plus a Duration class, a built-in clamp, and session cookies defaulting to httponly and SameSite Lax, which should have been the default a decade ago. I did not pick this language 19 years ago. It picked me somehow. First thing that ran on the AppServ (does someone still remember it? 🥲 ), and everything after that followed from an accident. People have been burying it that entire time. It's so hard when you have depression and a migraine with a severe prodrome and anhedonia at the same time. There was one day when I didn't think about death, but it seems that was a very short episode. Before that, I found out that the insurance company won't pay my family if I decide to end my life, because they won't let me get life insurance due to my diagnoses already being in the database, and they specifically account for cases like this. Full disclosure on the cost of that free upgrade. The reboot to pick it up hung at the hypervisor level and took the instance with it. Almost 15 hours of downtime, 41.91% uptime for the day, and nothing I could do from inside the box because there was no inside to get to. Worth it. But this is the part of "simple restart" that the is mentioned in email. Email from @OVHcloud@mastodon.social this morning: the bandwidth on my VPS went from 400 Mbit to 1 Gbit. Same plan, same price, nothing for me to do. This is the box running dol.social. The one I benchmarked last month, on the grounds that its memory and disk beat the newer 2027 model and the network gap did not matter enough to move. The network gap is now gone too. I'm like 50 years late to this realization because I have avoided horror media for most of my life (I mostly still avoid #horror, but I used to, too). A lot of horror is weirdly (to me) idealistic. If spurned dead lovers, innocent death row executions, tortured children, genocided indigenous communities, aggrieved ecosystems, etc. really could wreak havoc from beyond the grave, cops would never invoke qualified immunity, molesting clergy would choose different occupations, colonizers would become accountants, and abusive parents would throw themselves off cliffs instead of beating their children. There would be a constant force of vigilante justice from the spirit world. It would be capricious, inconsistent, and vicious, but it would have intense effects on our world. I guess some horror is at least partly a lament about the injustice of our world and a wish for a better one, bizarre and violent as the fickle justice there would be. (I find myself pretty interested in literary and film analysis of horror though I have the handicap of not wanting to watch or read the media referred to) #tv #movies #literature #thoughts #noob

Drew the whole OSI stack because I got tired of googling which layer TLS sits on. Many years in. Still counting on my fingers. In practice I touch three of them. Physical, when someone unplugged the thing. Network, when it is DNS. Application, when it is also DNS. Presentation I had to look up. Twice. The first result was a mnemonic about pizza so I closed the tab out of spite. Layer 5 is in there too. Doing something. Random frustration #thoughts

In the last two days I saw a newspaper article with a photo of Elon Musk doing the Nazi salute. And today I was reading some news with the typical "The police said via X".

Is this the new normal ? Nazi-salute photos in the press ? Newspaper articles that will only have things like :

  • "Politician A said so on X"
  • "Meanwhile politician B replied on X"
  • "The government announced on X"
  • "As the video on X shows"

(This also shows that press is on X daily, which I do not consider to be a very good thing)

Elon Musk appears to radicalize even more, but several mainstream press appears to normalize Twitter further.

Is there no way out ? An emergency exit other than go live in the woods ?

I saw a video online where someone was asking random people on the street: “What would you choose? A million dollars right now - but you don't get to see tomorrow? Or no money at all, just another day tomorrow?” The point was to show how much people value their own life - that even one more day is worth more than a million dollars.
