I figure every 20something garage band figures this out really fast--the drummer can make or break your sound. I'm not deeply in this world, but even from the edges I see that good drummers are constantly swamped with requests for collaboration, more than singers, guitarists, or even bassists. Related: one of my favorite books is Taft, by Ann Patchett, about a blues drummer.

@rl_dane@polymaths.social I don't know the answer to this, because concentrating power, legitimized by a whole bunch of people, in one or a very few other people, can be a very efficient way to get things done. But power really does corrupt; we've all seen it. The DNC leaders blocking progressive candidates right now in favor of politicians who want to cooperate with ICE, appease Trump, etc. were presumably filled with all the right motivations at some point in the past. I can see some of the problems but I don't know how to fix them. I am tired of seeing liberals become behavioral reactionaries as a "necessary" strategy to beat reactionaries, with predictable results.

There's a good bit of scientific evidence suggesting that men and white people are not specifically the driving element behind economic, political, social, humanitarian, and ecological problems in our western meta-society. It's plausible that power itself is the issue. If true, then marginalized groups like women, ethnic minorities, and sexual & gender minorities would be similarly brutal and destructive if they were in charge. As a scientist I say it's time for empiricism. Let's find out. Put women and other marginalized groups in charge for a few decades and see what happens. I'll help analyze the data.

Reason #3,429 I'm not popular at parties: I have issues with things like this. Science isn't "real" (The Might Be Giants kinda lost me with that song a decade or two ago). Science is an explanatory framework or a particular kind of investigation process, not the results of those. More importantly (to me), science doesn't actually deal in "reality." It can never establish what's real or not. To be fair, we probably don't have any system of knowledge that can, unless you believe in religious or other mystical systems that are usually defined as being unverifiable by the methods science uses (e.g., public replication on demand, etc.). Science gives potential explanations for phenomena, along with (usually) methods of testing the extent to which those explanations match empirical observations. But reality never appears. Many people (including me, most of the time) believe that there is a "reality" that might potentially be described by scientific theories, hopefully with increasing accuracy, but even that is difficult or impossible to really establish--as far as I know, science can't prove that reality exists or that science is interacting with it if it does. Even empirical observations are mired in the "is there even a reality to describe" problem. The issue gets thorny and very unsatisfying, according to the philosophers I've read (the ones I can understand, but mostly other people summarizing their ideas). #Science isn't "real." It's the explanatory system with the best track record so far of matching predictions to observations, by a long shot. This is a #soapbox I get on from time to time. Honestly, I think the "science is real" messaging is unhelpful. It's magical thinking packaged as rationality. #empiricism #evidence #philosophy #popper #petpeeve #sciencecommunication

Had a solid, helpful conversation with a person who Knows A Bunch Of Shit about organizations and systems, about subtle but clear problems in liberal/progressive organizations of leadership getting authoritarian and pissy while insisting they aren't. For example, leaders refusing or just declining to use within-organization expertise to address problems because that increases power of the rank-and-file and therefore reduces the relative power of the leadership. Anyway, it's awesome to have someone around who knows things and is deeply thoughtful about this stuff. It is a nice bonus that sometimes they meet up with you and have long smooches. #organization #systems #power #romance

I'm like 50 years late to this realization because I have avoided horror media for most of my life (I mostly still avoid #horror, but I used to, too). A lot of horror is weirdly (to me) idealistic. If spurned dead lovers, innocent death row executions, tortured children, genocided indigenous communities, aggrieved ecosystems, etc. really could wreak havoc from beyond the grave, cops would never invoke qualified immunity, molesting clergy would choose different occupations, colonizers would become accountants, and abusive parents would throw themselves off cliffs instead of beating their children. There would be a constant force of vigilante justice from the spirit world. It would be capricious, inconsistent, and vicious, but it would have intense effects on our world. I guess some horror is at least partly a lament about the injustice of our world and a wish for a better one, bizarre and violent as the fickle justice there would be. (I find myself pretty interested in literary and film analysis of horror though I have the handicap of not wanting to watch or read the media referred to) #tv #movies #literature #thoughts #noob

I've been working on a ridiculous fortune telling system for entertainment (thinking of calling it something like VERY BAD TAROT AND FORTUNE TELLING BY SOMEONE WHO HAS NO MYSTICAL ABILITIES WHATSOEVER). I wanted some coins I could engrave symbols on. I was looking at Ali Express and ebay for coin blanks. They are $0.50 to $1.50 each, in bulk (USD). Suddenly I realized I have lots of coin blanks and they are only $0.01 to $0.25 plus a few minutes with a dremel tool :D #diy #maker #cheap

@aqurette@mastodon.nu Yes, it's grotesque. As with many other things, however, it would probably go away entirely if death weren't a constant reality. Make all Palestinians middle class. Give them land, homes, and a nation. Give them an identity recognized and dignified by their neighbors and the world. Allow building of a stable society that provides satisfying work and education. Give them soccer moms and PTAs, after-work get-togethers at the sports place, etc. The obsession with death will disappear in a generation or two.

@DragonBard@dice.camp it is good, I think, at backward-looking things like summarizing many kinds of existing information. It seems inconsistent, right now, at generating situation-tailored remixes of that info (apparently really good in some cases, bad in others, and everything in between). From what I've read it still fully sucks at generating anything truly novel.

One weird consequence of recent internet history: AI summaries often get around the problem of search engines returning masses of low-effort, low-quality, firewalled, or clickbait websites instead of actual information by giving users (possibly/probably accurate) information about many topics without what has become a familiar runaround. Try searching (regardless of the search engine) for information about a specific topic: in many cases, you can't find any information about it from the first page or two of search results, and you're likely to need to click through to a few pages before you find one that isn't content farmed, requiring an account, locked down, or low-quality/questionable shit made by an even dumber AI model than the one generating the search summary. Maybe this is one of those ubiquitous situations where many years of refusing to fix one set of problems left the field wide open for a worse set. #genAI #ai #search #internet

I've been disappointed in my #RegionalBurn experiences this year... until now! My "home burn," #PlayaDelFuego (PdF), in PA, was a no-go because of vehicle issues, and my autumn burn, #ConstellationBurn (also in PA), was canceled. But I just got back from #POrtalBurn in southwestern NY (USA). It's a small burn on a pretty hillside and it was delightful. Snacks, drinks, absolutely wonderful people to talk to (and approximately 2 people who seemed like dickheads but were still polite and respectful in a general sense), silly hijinks, blinged-out theme camps, jamming with guitar, homemade drums, etc. on multiple occasions with a mix of musicians whose skill level ranged from "what is a music" to "I perform regularly with a jazz ensemble"... it was everything I hoped it would be. #happy #burningman #outdoors #music

Replying to @KatyElphinstone@mas.to
@KatyElphinstone@mas.to everyone is somewhere on the "openness to experience" personality dimension. I think you are right that one direction is largely about safety, comfort, etc. The other is perhaps about a need for occasional (defined very differently for different people) new experiences. I feel the latter acts as a "push" to move us out of the former on some individualized, situationally-influenced schedule, but it could be seen the other way around, too. Those two drives are more or less opposites; they don't live comfortably together, though everyone has some of each and we all fluctuate in which one is dominant at a.given time or in a particular situation. Sometimes two people get married even though one of them has a need for predictability and familiarity 16 out of every 24 hours and the other has a craving for novelty every twelve seconds.

@trinitybat@opencoaster.net I don't have a Bambu but my experience has given me an opinion: if I needed to use only special filament, I would have bought a different printer. My guess is that a wide range of filaments will work and just getting reasonably high quality filament is key: dimensional accuracy, consistent melting point, etc. Then you can dial in your settings and you will develop preferences for specific filaments, sometimes different ones for specific kinds of prints. Wow, that became a whole dissertation. Feel free to ignore completely if it doesn't have anything to offer your situation.

I was at a get-together at someone's home in a very tiny town in rural Pennsylvania (USA) last night. Just a dozen or so friends getting together, and I was invited as a +1. Three of the people there made excellent music (original and covers of others' music) and played/sang it for us. Like... damn. Tiny town with a population of less than 1,000, hours from anywhere politically impactful, and this happens. I am sometimes amazed at how much art is made by humans, pretty much everywhere. I love to see it, hear it, and feel it. #art #music #random
