I managed to isolate a residential proxy botnet that was hammering one of my client servers, and after adding some new htaccess rules, I've got CPU and RAM use down from 95% to about 25% and no more 503 errors. #Tech #WordPress #VPS #Hosting #DDoS
Monitoring my posture more carefully while at my desk working (and playing). My #interoception is a bit unreliable like many #neurodivergent folk, but a mindful body scan approach may help, if I can stay aware of it. My trouble is that I get so absorbed in what I'm doing, nothing else exists.

@kolya@social.cologne Ive been running multiple VPS'es running multiple Claude sessions. Ive explained my current workflow a while back but #Mastodon search sucks. I cant even find my own posts I did a couple months ago. Anyway, my CLAUDE.md has directives to; a) I have a folder called DOCs any time I have a problem/challenge that is resolved (I call them thesis) #Claude writes DATE_Thesis.md b) I also have ai_index.md which starts with a prompt to regenedate the ai_index. The index has a filename and a brief summary of existing thesis. The purpose of both of these files is for the model to come up to speed on the project very quickly, without grepping shit all the time. c) I also have file called NEW where all the ideas / bugfixes I dont have time to fix go. So in promt I just say NEW: Fix global hunger and it gets added. But specifically, the idea I have, clanky though it is, is to use one of my #Wireguard tunnels as a master /DOC repository and all the instances running Claude can write to the library of Alexandria. I used to do the copy/pasta thing but it drove me up the wall. Though I still do it for x-server sessions. But it irks me and I may need to fix it soon. #Vibecode #VPS #Selfhosting

Full disclosure on the cost of that free upgrade. The reboot to pick it up hung at the hypervisor level and took the instance with it. Almost 15 hours of downtime, 41.91% uptime for the day, and nothing I could do from inside the box because there was no inside to get to. Worth it. But this is the part of "simple restart" that the is mentioned in email. Email from @OVHcloud@mastodon.social this morning: the bandwidth on my VPS went from 400 Mbit to 1 Gbit. Same plan, same price, nothing for me to do. This is the box running dol.social. The one I benchmarked last month, on the grounds that its memory and disk beat the newer 2027 model and the network gap did not matter enough to move. The network gap is now gone too. Sometimes newer is not better. At least not for the things that matter to you. I benchmarked two OVH VPS in the same Zurich location. My current 2025 model with a 500 Mbit network against the newer 2027 model with 1 Gbit. Same AMD EPYC Genoa cores, same provider, nearly identical sysbench CPU scores. Then the surprises started. The older box pushes 6,612 MiB/s in memory tests, the newer one 932 MiB/s. That is 7x. Random 4K reads: 1.32 million IOPS against 832k. And the old model is even about 1 EUR cheaper. For a Mastodon instance, databases, and Docker workloads, memory and disk beat extra bandwidth every time. So the shiny new VPS gets demoted to reverse proxy and backup duty, and this instance stays exactly where it is. Today I realized that my Linux Contabo VPS has a built-in script in /etc/cron.hourly that drops the cache every hour. I found it when I checked dmesg; there are so many "drop_caches: 1" lines.

I guess the memory is not dedicated, but shared via KVM memory ballooning.

It seems Contabo tries so hard to reclaim physical memory from its customers by dropping page caches every hour. I feel like Contabo is somewhat notorious for aggressive overprovisioning.

I will delete the free script.

Several things could finally be clarified to continue this service to make sure people can learn and practice on real #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #NetBSD systems to #RUNBSD. Also, BoxyBSD starts moving over to #Sylve on #bhyve. But not only that!
