Having followed a tutorial, I could make #WireGuard wg-quick work on my #OpenBSD, but not without DNS query leaks, so I learned I must figure out #unbound - however, a noob like me can only seem to manage to fix configuration errors while unbound itself apparently won't start because of this (which I found out after learning there's more than one way to debug unbound - not elegant, imho):

[1781449588] unbound[95585:0] fatal error: could not open ports
I figured I should add my VPN interfaces to unbound.conf, but other than that I'm still clueless what else do I need to add or delete.

I really like my #wireguard setup.
I'm moving more and more services behind it and don't expose them anymore.
In addition I've setup #pihole again and move as much as possible from my #pfsense firewall to my #nixos server.
It just feels better to have things set up declaratively instead of relying on backups.

Well that was fun.
I managed to lock myself out of my fileserver (QNAP NAS) after I misconfigured the #Wireguard client.
Luckily there is a short window after reboot where the client isn't connected and I was able to SSH into the server and remove the broken config.
Took me three attempts however.

Okay, this is weird.
I am seeing tailscaled spiking up to 250% CPU usage every other minute, with up to 60 MBit/s outgoing traffic on the tailscale0 interface… and on the wg0 interface I see the same amount of traffic during that period.
I now disabled wireguard and the issue is gone.
But I have absolutely NO idea why this is happening, what causes it, and why it (seemingly) suddenly started - I did not have this issue earlier today. All I did in between was update the unstable channel, but all packages involved here (tailscale, wireguard) are from stable. So… 🤔 I am at loss…

Olen tässä kuluneen muutaman päivän aikana tutustunut verkkoihin, reitityksiin ja WireGuard-VPN:n toimintaan. Vaikka minulla on ollut ihan kelvollinen ymmärrys verkkojen yleisestä toiminnasta, aika monesti se on loppunut kesken jos on pitänyt alkaa viritellä vähänkään monimutkaisempia kokonaisuuksia.
Kirjoittelin itselleni läjäpäin muistiinpanoja omista harjoituksista, onnistumisista ja epäonnistumisista. Päätin raapustella niiden pohjalta blogiin yleisen höpinän asioista, joihin tuli pureuduttua. Aika kuivakkaa juttua, mutta verkoista on vaikea muunkaanlaista tekstiä raapustella 😄
Silti on sanottava, että verkot ja WireGuardin sisäinen toiminta on ainakin minusta tosi kiehtovaa! Nykyään sitä on verkkojen ja VPN:ien ympäröimänä, mutta harva lopulta ymmärtää miten ne toimivat. Villiä, että joku nekin on keksinyt ja kehittänyt!
