Remember when I said my DR setup should have me back up in 20-30 minutes? Yeah. About that. Turns out a backup job can run clean every single night for months and still not actually be backing up what you think it is. So here's what I actually found out the hard way replacing nixos2's dying hardware. Feel free to cue the old "The more you know" clip. https://blog.ppb1701.com/best-laid-plans-replacing-nixos2s-failing-hardware-part-19-of-building-a-resilient-home-server-serie #blog #homeserver #nixos #disasterrecovery #selfhosting #gitea #tailscale

Docker vs LXC vs Nix, what do you recommend? (not a specific purpose, just in general) #Docker #LXC #LXD #Nix #NixOS #Linux

So I realised I forgot to update on the Nix OS situation. Unfortunately, I ended up running out of time to get things working properly, I really needed Blender in particular this week for work for some complex scenes, and it just wasn't looking like I'd be able to get it workable in time, so I begrudgingly went back to Windows. I'm not giving up though, this is just temporary, when I get some spare time I'm planning to create a partition for Nix OS and keep tinkering, and I have my config backed up so I can just pick up where I left off. I also successfully installed Nix OS on an older laptop I had laying around which doesn't have any Nvidia hardware, and it went super smoothly and I'm still really loving the OS there. for those interested in what was happening, when I made this post, the issue was actually something really simple, I just misread the wiki's instructions about how to set up Nvidia Prime lol. My laptop has an integrated intel GPU and the main Nvidia one, and NixOS was exclusively using the intel one. Turns out I just had my config set to Offload mode, but didn't specify anything could use the Nvidia GPU. At first I swapped it to synced mode but this caused really bad jittering and flickering on the screen. Reverse Sync had the same issue, so I went back to offload mode and actually specified which programs were to use the Nvidia GPU this time, and ran into a bunch of new problems. Steam and all of the games I tried worked wonderfully right out of the gate, so did Davinci, which I was a bit surprised about (though I didn't do anything particularly heavy to test it) so there was progress at least. Blender and OBS though were still mostly unusable. Blender was running slower than before with everything except rendering, and it still couldn't see the Nvidia GPU as an option for CUDA rendering in the system settings (Now that I'm back on windows I noticed that apparently the intel gpu is also CUDA compatible, but it couldn't see that either). OBS could no longer record my screen or specific windows at all either. Like I said, I kind of just ran out of time. My plan B had actually been to install Pop_OS if Nix didn't work out since I had gotten that to work on an older PC with a Nvidia GPU in the past, but I couldn't get my drawing tablet to work with it, so I ended up just biting the bullet and going back to windows (I miss not having ads everywhere 😭). There were a bunch of other issues that I was also running into with NixOS as well (e.g. every few startups my wifi card stopped being recognised and the laptop was generally running very hot even when it wasn't doing anything), so for now I'm back on Windows, but I'm keen to keep trying to work this out once I have more free time. #linux #nixos #update

#glfos #nixos #linux

Is anyone in the home lab community running NixOS on a Raspberry Pi 4B (8GB), and could share your frustrations or cautionary tales? I am seriously considering dividing into that. I don't need convincing. At this point I just need to know where the rakes and the skeletons are. So basically just give me the dirt. 😄 #HomeLab #NixOS @homelab@fedigroups.social

Good point. I forgot to add that to my list but I did make one alias reflake for sudo nixos-rebuild switch --flake ~/nixos-dotfiles#nixos-werecat After I had to type this out for IDK how many times (and forgot about CTRL+R) it quickly got annoying :)

Good news for the #ArchLinux users among you: #Censor is now available in the #Arch User Repository (#AUR): https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/censor Your feedback is welcome! Already since version 0.3.0, Censor has been packed for #NixOS: https://search.nixos.org/packages?channel=unstable&show=censor Thanks to @pi_crew@social.project-insanity.org for maintaining! #pdf #redaction #linux #packaging #PKGBUILD #maintenance

Moved FreshRss, UptimeKuma, Navidrome, and Linkding from docker containers to #NixOS modules on my #homelab. Was astonishingly easy. NixOS may be my new pick for sever distro.

So after switching my #nixos servers to use account-utils [1], i switched my desktop today. And nothing exploded, login just works, the switch is seamless. As it should be! I didn't trust it for my daily driver for a while, but after I fixed up some internals of how we do plasma-login-manager with pam, this just works now! And same should be the case for any other display manager supported on nixos. [1] https://github.com/thkukuk/account-utils

By any chance, does anyone have experience with getting Linux (the Nix OS distro specifically) to work well with Nvidia gpu’s? I installed Nix Os on my laptop a few months ago and I can not get its Nvidia GPU to co-operate no matter what I seem to do. I know it’s most likely something with the driver setup I just don’t know what. I managed to get it usable but Blender and OBS in particular are really really struggling, and I’m not sure where I’m going wrong 🙃 #linux #nixos #pleasehelp

Bitwarden shipped a client update that requires Vaultwarden 1.37.0 — which also happens to close 8 medium-severity security advisories that don't even have CVEs assigned yet. Nixpkgs hasn't caught up. Stable currently points to 1.36.0. So I spent some time (unplanned) patching my server before the apps auto updated and relegated me to server website only. https://blog.ppb1701.com/when-bitwarden-breaks-vaultwarden-before-nixpkgs-catches-up-part-18-of-building-a-resilient-home #blog #nixos #homeserver #selfhosting #vaultwarden #security

"I opened Obsidian one morning. Blank screen. No notes. I could have spent an afternoon debugging an Electron app. Instead, I spent a week replacing my entire note-taking workflow with a relatively young typesetting system, and I love it." My new #blog is now #online: I switched from #Obsidian to #Typst and #Neovim (And some mentions of #Nix and #Rust along the way :D) Check it out and don't hesitate to provide feedback: https://dontblameme.codeberg.page/blog/replacing-obsidian-with-neovim-and-typst.html #blogpost #NixOS

Seems like #NixOS removed support for running x86_64-linux NixOS guests on aarch64-darwin macOS hosts in PR https://github.com/NixOS/nixpkgs/pull/535511 The PR description does not even mention this change. Not sure if it is intentional or a mistake, but this completely breaks my x86_64 Linux builders running on macOS. @raito@nixos.paris would you have any idea?
