Remember when I said my DR setup should have me back up in 20-30 minutes? Yeah. About that. Turns out a backup job can run clean every single night for months and still not actually be backing up what you think it is. So here's what I actually found out the hard way replacing nixos2's dying hardware. Feel free to cue the old "The more you know" clip. https://blog.ppb1701.com/best-laid-plans-replacing-nixos2s-failing-hardware-part-19-of-building-a-resilient-home-server-serie #blog #homeserver #nixos #disasterrecovery #selfhosting #gitea #tailscale

Rebooting a server… waiting for it to come back up (this mastodon install). Doesn’t come back up. The oh 💩 feeling starts. Actually my #tailscale needs reauth… deep sigh of relief. 😮‍💨

i want to try doing #OpenWRT #extroot kind of thing but with #nfs . since my #router doesn't have usb slot and its flash is 8mb. I am thinking about putting NFS mounting after core services are up and network is somewhat operational to not have cascading network failures stemming from vps being down or chiken and egg problem with local nfs share not being able to connect to it. like i currently want it for running #tailscale subnet router directly on router instead of running it on another device with static route on the router. also i kinda want to try running actual #mulvadvpn cli client instead of wireguard profies to be able to use #DAITA and anti censorship features. tho i am not sure how mulvads #nftables rules would interact with openwrt firewall which uses nftables under the hood.

Is it normal a Tailscale network can recognise every PC by their DNS name UNLESS I'm on that PC? e.g.: my threadripper is called "ripper" so I can access it from my laptop using just "ripper" for both SSH or web services. But from itself it cannot. 🤔 Shouln't Tailscale act as DNS the same for all independently of being to the host with the name than without? #tailscale #ask

I recently leveled-up my ad-blocking game by hooking my #pihole up to a #tailscale network so I can have it blocking ads on all my devices even outside of my home network! I used to assume that Tailcale would be scary to set up and only for someone with a lot more experience and time on their hands than me, but it was surprisingly easy. They even had a guide specifically for this use case: https://tailscale.com/docs/solutions/block-ads-all-devices-anywhere-using-raspberry-pi

OK so I'm looking for some feedback for a conundrum I really like and would like to use #netbird or #tailscale, with a strong leaning toward tailscale. But... To use either you have to use an OpenID Connect identity provider This is something that literally all the videos and tutorials skim past quickly, nothing to see here... The thing is that the 'ready to go' providers are Google, Apple, Microsoft, github and a couple of others. And as someone who has a healthy dislike/distrust of these companies and would prefer to degoogle and demicroslop wherever possible The thought of tying my mesh VPN to one of these providers just feels wrong, and if you loose access to your OIDC you loose access to your tailscale/netbird I understand that I could self host a provider, but that seems like an overcomplication and removes the simplicity of what netbird and talescale are trying to do The other option is to sign up to another OIDC provider like Zitadel.. Which also seems like an overcomplication Who ever though OIDC is more secure probably also keeps all their eggs in one basket too What would you do in this situation

Ok, as an alternative to Discord, Chatto (https://github.com/chattocorp/chatto) is looking rather promising.

  • AGPL

  • can be easily self hosted

  • Paid hosting available in EU (better privacy protection)

  • Written in Go

  • mobile apps on roadmap

  • web app is good on both mobile and desktop browsers

  • one client can connect to multiple servers

I have a demo instance running on my homelab and I could see opening this up to my friends using tailscale funnels.

Are you using #Tailscale with the #Mullvad add-on? The UI for canceling your subscription is a bit tricky. They don't show you the "remove add-on" button, you have to click on "purchase more" and then at the bottom of that screen you can remove the add-on. Btw, @tailscale@hachyderm.io , having to click "purchase more" to cancel is very misleading.

RE: https://mastodon.online/@mullvadnet/116822264297340100 I am no longer using or paying for #tailscale's Mullvad integration; while the exit nodes are handy sometimes, they are not important enough to fund the causes that Mullvad's CEO will fund using my money.

Replying to @sp4rkr4t@mastodon.scot
@sp4rkr4t@mastodon.scot It's funny you mention this because I've been thinking about moving off #Tailscale :tailscale: and saw this toot late last night - https://social.mauve.haus/@mauvehed/statuses/01KWANKG9DD299RHT6RZSEKM4A I've made it as far as opening the Netbird website 🤣, but I'll be doing more research this week!

RE: https://social.mitexleo.one/@ml/116817621611798510 F*ck me, didn’t see this one coming. But why would you do this, surely this is commercial lunacy, and a betrayal to the majority of the people you have built professional relationship with? Watching now to see what #Tailscale do with their Mullvard partnership.

amongst my less smarter things was trying to set up another #wireguard tunnel on a #homelab mini pc in my parent's basement that killed my #Tailscale setup so i essentially got locked out 🤐

So I decided to create a self hosted search engine on my NAS. Turns out its not as difficult as you might think. I also get to opt out of who I use in my search engine. And best of all I own my own data. So what do we think? I'll just keep it private of course on my internal network. I'll access it via tail-scale remotely. #SearXNG #SelfHosted #FOSS #Privacy #Homelab #TrueNAS #Tailscale #OpenSource #DegoogleYourself

is anyone running their small #mastodon instance entirely locally (#homelab) and then exposes it via #cloudflare or #tailscale tunnels? really thinking about doing that to save some cloud/vm costs

Okay, this is weird.

I am seeing tailscaled spiking up to 250% CPU usage every other minute, with up to 60 MBit/s outgoing traffic on the tailscale0 interface... and on the wg0 interface I see the same amount of traffic during that period.

I now disabled wireguard and the issue is gone.

But I have absolutely NO idea why this is happening, what causes it, and why it (seemingly) suddenly started - I did not have this issue earlier today. All I did in between was update the unstable channel, but all packages involved here (tailscale, wireguard) are from stable. So... 🤔 I am at loss...
