@nixCraft@mastodon.social The open-source dilemma in plain sight: critical global infrastructure relying on unrewarded volunteer trust. When attackers exploit that openness with supply chain malware, the emergency freeze shows how fragile free software ecosystems are under relentless corporate/state-level pressure. #CyberSecurity #OpenSource #ArchLinux

whilst i came up with an entirely different outcome [i would never ever choose the windoze of penguins, ugh, & i am not a gamer, so care nada about any of that associated crap], some of his thinking matches mine https://www.howtogeek.com/after-5-years-of-using-arch-linux-i-quit/ though i still have :archlinux: installed on my main pooter's sda, & whilst it is still very reliable for me, the friction from the routine maintenance [he listed some of the items / actions, but there's others too] has been a bit of a drag for me for some years now, plus the ongoing #AUR attacks necessitate a perpetually heightened defensive posture that's tiring, & to which i chose eventually to respond to by replacing most of my AUR pkgs with #flatpak or #distrobox ones, or in several cases nothing at all [ie, i chose to just abandon some apps altogether]. so for a couple of months now [after more than a year in various VMs], my delightful daily penguin is the immutable atomic alpha :kde: :linux:, on sdc. it is really pleasant to use, albeit ofc i needed to adjust several of my workflows to accommodate its RO base. my sdb remains largely empty atm, but once it reaches Beta i hope to install :opensuse: kalpa here unfortunately my old 2011 Dell xps-15 lappy is "stuck" with Arch, coz it only has bios not uefi boot, which eliminates both of those atomics, alas #DropbearPooterising #Linux #LinuxWomen #FOSS:kde: :linux:#KDELinux | :archlinux: :kde: :plasma:#ArchLinux #KDEPlasma:opensuse:#Kalpa | :debian:#SparkyLinux | :fedora:#Kinoite:firefox_nightly:#FirefoxNightly #FirefoxSecondSidebar #NativeTreeTabs

Good news for the #ArchLinux users among you: #Censor is now available in the #Arch User Repository (#AUR): https://aur.archlinux.org/packages/censor Your feedback is welcome! Already since version 0.3.0, Censor has been packed for #NixOS: https://search.nixos.org/packages?channel=unstable&show=censor Thanks to @pi_crew@social.project-insanity.org for maintaining! #pdf #redaction #linux #packaging #PKGBUILD #maintenance

Looks like the AUR of Arch Linux has drawn another round of fire. This time it appears to be a malware integrated into the build() step that comes with the PKGBUILD repo. Possibly Tor using. If the build() step calls some binary like validator, assembler, optimizer, ... that comes with the AUR repo with sudo and suddenly and unexplained appears in the PKGBUILD be very suspicious. See https://lists.archlinux.org/archives/list/aur-general@lists.archlinux.org/thread/BU6RECTA5DTJBL7Q4NQI5T3AKIN2FWSF/ (confirmation of scale) and https://lists.archlinux.org/archives/list/aur-general@lists.archlinux.org/thread/PR77K3SB6RFSTYP3KYOJOOX56SMXGBWO/ (first report) And other related mails of that timespan. Probably a good idea to be extra careful around AUR again. If anyone has taken the malware apart I'd be interested in hearing details... @sodiboo@gaysex.cloud @ifin@infosec.exchange #aur #archLinux #malware #linux #upgrades #threatintel

AI nonsense, rant Hover or focus to reveal Sensitive
I have to admit that for the longest time I was kinda ambiguous on the whole generative AI thing. Mostly because I majored in computational linguistics and I love the technology and maths side behind it, I maintain it's an incredibly fascinating invention. I did obviously realise the many ethical problems of using generative AI for all kinds of purposes that ended up in plagiarism, misinformation, harmful content generation and so on. I hated that large language models – being, you know, language models – were shoved into all kinds of roles they were not made for, e. g. information retrieval, programming, web searching, translation, database wrangling, maths, psychotherapy, customer support and so on and so on. On the other hand, I maintained that large language models are a really useful technology for use cases they were intended for, i. e. generating probable text sequences and working with natural language. Looking for a word that you can't quite describe but you know exists? A search engine often can't help you, but an LLM could. Rewriting a text in British English instead of American English? Worked fine. Generating soulless corporate emails to ask your boss for a deadline expansion? Why not. I still think that valid use cases for LLMs exist and that the tech is super fascinating by itself. So, what changed and why am I writing this? It started fcking pissing me off dude!! And I'm mad! Like, everywhere you go, everything's polluted by some AI-generated garbage now. Hobby communities where people used to show off their passion projects? Practically gone, everything's generated by some AI now. Icons, thumbnails, descriptions, perhaps the thing itself.Cool niche Linux programs? Everything's vibecoded or made to run AI for all kinds of nonsense. Seriously! Check out the top 5 #ArchLinux AUR packages [edit: for the keyword "terminal"]! They're ALL 'agents' and AI toolkits!Local festivals and events? Everything's an AI poster now! Gone are the days where the local school kids would design a shitty lil poster for their school summer festival. It's all creepy piss filter ChatGPT fake-Ghibli people now generated in 5 seconds by some adult. And everyone into the AI thing is incredibly insufferable, doesn't have any concept of consent, and seemingly relishes in creeping people out or upsetting them! Like, some of these "agents" seem specifically marketed at people who want to feel like they're super smart software engineers who own the libs by existing. Everything needs to come with a "hehe we're disrupting the market" wink. Where are the people genuinely excited about LLM technology? Why is everyone a grifter or a smug asshole on purpose? Seriously, I don't use and don't ever want to use LLMs for anything anymore, because it just feels so dirty. I'd rather have to find a synonym for a word myself once a month or so instead of using any of those weird-ass machines. Like seriously, every damn cool looking program I consider for my Linux installation has "Claude" as a main "contributor". Everywhere I look there are these shitty out of context rocket emoji. "Agents" files that baby talk about the repository structure pollute every Git repo now. Everyone's "building a tool" now, nobody's programming shit anymore. Minecraft modding sites are full of slop mods with marketing speak and terrible logos that don't even work. Everywhere you look everyone's sweet-talking marketing buzzwords at each other instead of talking like a normal human being. It's so hard to find passion projects now! Everything sucks! fuck! #linux #ai #antiAI #llms #llm #programming

for mega-yonks i have avidly followed heapsa #linux hashtags [as a linux user & enjoyer] plus various #bsd tags [as someone somewhat bsd-curious but quite overwhelmed by it conceptually & practically]. am now thinking of unfollowing said bsd tags, coz seeing all the posts from all the clever peeps using it with all their incomprehensible commands & concepts, rather than inspiring me is kinda sorta more demoralising & overwhelming me also, there's just no point me ignoring the fact that i bloody well love using my various linux systems, & hafta be honest with myself that the chances of me ever seriously embarking on learning then using another paradigm now are pretty damn slender so, unfollowing said bsd tags seems logical & pragmatic and yet... ...it also feels cowardly & lazy ergo ever more i continue walking around in an endless circle on a cold distant planet, locked in a logic loop, the very robot of which asimov wrote #DropbearPooterising #Linux #LinuxWomen #FOSS:kde: :linux:#KDELinux | :archlinux: :kde: :plasma:#ArchLinux #KDEPlasma:debian:#SparkyLinux | :opensuse:#Kalpa | :fedora:#Kinoite
