After upgrading to Kubuntu 26.04 LTS my screen brightness stopped being adjustable. The only way I found to fix it was by modifying the GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT entry in /etc/default/grub to:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash acpi_backlight=native i915.enable_dpcd_backlight=0"

So if you're having this issue, hope this is helpful

Did #Linux 7 (#Ubuntu Server 24.04) change anything regarding the #Realtek RTL8125 NIC driver (r8169)? I've never seen that in Linux 6.x.

I really like Ubuntu. However, I don't think I can recommend Ubuntu to Linux newcomers, simply because Ubuntu appstore only include snaps and some utility from their APT source. Linux newcomers usually ask "can I download and use Google Chrome browser on it?", and considering that the browser is not available there (I have checked it, it's not there), so regrettably, I don't think newcomers would feel welcome using Ubuntu. They can just get the browser by adding additional APT source to get Google Chrome browser, or by adding Flatpak repo in which case Google Chrome flatpak is available, and both options are not recommended to absolute Linux beginners. #ubuntu #linux

TIL #Ubuntu LTS updates dont happen until August, even if the release happens in April, there's a 4 month time frame for testing and fixing before it's considered ready for the majority of users to upgrade from the previous LTS

Can someone advise me (or point me to reliable online resources) on building a #stereo #sound system with my #Linux #Ubuntu (software, hardware, amplifier, connections, digitizing my CDs, etc.)? I have zero expertise/experience with that so far. Re-posts will be highly appreciated.

ICMYI: Ubuntu 26.04 has gained a virtualisation HWE stack to bolster the distro's support for confidential compute. Newer versions of Qemu, libvirt and related tech is available, periodically back-ported from Ubuntu's interim releases to the current LTS. https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/07/ubuntu-26-04-virtualization-hwe-stack?v1 #Ubuntu #virtualization #linux

Selfhosting as a Linux newbie - Ubuntu Server LTS or Debian 13?

I use Debian as my daily driver, but I’m still a newbie. I would like to selfhost a few apps, initially on a VPS, but I will probably move to a local PC once I diagnose what is broken with my old computer. The guides at https://selfhosting.sh/ always recommend Ubuntu Server LTS for newbies, but Ubuntu seems to have bad PR and I already run Debian on my home PC. On one hand, I am a newbie and I guess Ubuntu might be easier to set up and maintain. Though, I don’t HOW exactly? On the other hand, if I have Debian on my home PC and on my server, they are the same system, so I’d be learning the same system at two places and with two usage scenarios. But it might be easier to make mistakes on Debian..? What is your opinion/recommendation?

Replying to @lproven@social.vivaldi.net
@lproven@social.vivaldi.net oh … … I probably tune out (without getting it) because, for example, I reject the notion that an Ubuntu-like installer would be detrimental to learning how to manage and maintain FreeBSD. https://www.reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/1v2t96c/comment/ozitl7j/?context=2 More because I couldn't figure out how it relates to anti-AI. @rl_dane@polymaths.social #Linux #Ubuntu #FreeBSD #BSD

The tech professional's quintessential dream of moving to a cabin in the woods. 😓 Had a benign action on a #MediaWiki instance triggering a ModSecurity false flag blocking my IP. I thought the entire server was down. Actually I had to disable a specific #ModSecurity rule. I'm a team of 1 managing these servers. This is a very lonely situation. Who could ever be expected to know what's happening?? It's just confused sysadmins and a lot of Googling. Brutal. #WebDev #Sysadmin #Devops #Ubuntu
