Xfwl4 - The roadmap for a Xfce Wayland Compositor "We, the Xfce team are excited to share some great news! After careful consideration, we’ve decided on a meaningful way to use the generous donations from our community: funding longtime Xfce core developer Brian Tarricone to create xfwl4, a brand-new Wayland compositor for Xfce. This initiative will utilize a significant portion of the project’s donated funds, but we believe it’s an important investment in Xfce’s future. The goal is, that xfwl4 will offer the same functionality and behavior as xfwm4 does, or as much as possible considering the differences between X11 and Wayland. Using xfwl4 should feel just like using xfwm4 on X11. We even plan to reuse the existing xfwm4 configuration dialogs and xfconf settings to ensure a seamless transition. Xfwl4 will not be based on the existing xfwm4 code. Support for the xx-cutouts-v1 #Wayland protocol landed in #Qt yesterday, which means Qt's SafeArea API will then also work with Wayland compositors supporting this protocol. So far only @phosh@social.phosh.mobi implements this on the compositor side, now #KDE apps will have the means to stay away from display cutouts/notches there automatically, reusing all the work we have done for this on the app and framework level for Android already. #LinuxMobile

Day 5: Not much going on other than tweaking KDE desktop, some .conf files, emerging missing packages, cleaning up some USE flags that really isn't needed at all in first place depending on desktop/linux profile which was already enabled by default. Fixed boot sequence by disabling UEFI logo in mobo which is now faster: (UFEI POST message -> Gentoo GRUB -> Plymouth Boot Splash Screen -> Login Screen -> Splash Screen Tweaked Librewolf to use tabs on vertical sidebar rather than toolbar with expanding on hover, I think it's starting to grow on me. MORE SPACE in horizontal screen! KDE Frameworks is behind update other than the new KDE Plasma 6.7.5 (I will figure this one out eventually) /boot and /efi is still a hot mess thanks to some confusions from the Handbook, maybe I will redo it next time as I do not want to mess that part lol #Gentoo #Linux #OpenRC #systemdless #Wayland #KDE #PostInstallation #Handbook

More #NetBSD thoughts: I'm an #i3wm / #sway or #KDE #Plasma guy. I tried #OpenBSD's default wm for about a minute, but it was just too jarring for me. I also used #cwm for a while, and it's actually nicely configurable, but I eventually reverted to i3 on OpenBSD. I haven't tried Sway yet, but #Wayland's supposedly working in "Fish Linux" now. ;) But #ctwm? Look, it's pretty ancient, and it's not a totally perfect fit for my worfklow, but I'm actually kinda diggin' it! It's also probably the most attractive default GUI of any of the BSDs, considering that obsd gives you a pretty loud bright red or bright blue titlebar motif-looking thing (not knocking motif, just the primary color choice), and #FreeBSD gives you (checks notes) no GUI by default. XD ctwm isn't quite as flexible as i3/sway, but it's just configurable enough to keep me coming back and tinkering away at it. The way the warpring function (alt+tab, in other words) works is pretty obtuse (only moving forward or backward in the window list, never re-ordering based on recency), but once I learned how to exclude windows (X11 classes or window titles) from the warpring, it became a ton more usable. I also figured out how to enable active titlebar highlight (it drives me nuts when that's disabled or very subtle, how do you even not understand that basic tenet of usability?) and even how to assign an xpm image to the titlebar so it looks pretty. Fun stuff! I should post another screenshot. ;)

I set out last week to replace my #passwordmanager #gopass. My requirements: keys live on my #yubikey, unlocking one secret doesn't expose the whole vault, native #Wayland UX, per secret fingerprint/pin policy. Survey: severely lacking. I was not looking for a project, but the #linux desktop really needs this. To stay motivated I raised the bar: native #cosmic and #android too, learning #slint on the way. Not a webview. Secrets done right: constant-time and zeroized. Now we're cooking on gas!

My latest adventures with #wayland is not pleasant. Today mplayer just fucked my whole system. It tried to load a video file, the terminal becomes unresposive and then the screen becomes black. Now kwin_wayland runs at many hundred percent and when logging in from another system there's no trace of a mplayer process. Great.

I have been working for @collabora@floss.social for 15 years now. They suggested that I should look into this new idea called #Wayland when I was being interviewed (in IRC!) for the contractor position. That is how I got to where I am today, and mental health permitting I am in a very happy place. Just wanted to brag about the 15 years. 😋

Reading https://www.spurint.org/journal/2026/07/llms-and-xfwl4 where an #xfce dev admits to AI slop vibecoding what may be significant parts of the #Wayland port. This is a really bad precedent to set, this should not be allowed. I'm hoping this trend doesn't continue, but it will definitely lead to actionable responses if it does. #gnu #linux

Since I still don ´t like #wayland (everytime I decide to use something is not working), and my favourite DE has decided support for #xorg I fully switched to #sonicde a #kde desktop environment that will be focused on supporting xorg!

*sigh* so the day has come when Wyland was forced upon me, and after an update I rebooted and now Plasma complains about some iBus settings I had to google for a solution for. Also, my dmesg output is now filled with kernel call traces and what looks like some kind of obscure warning about dire straits. Are there any hints why? tried #wayland again in my new setup. Sorry folks, you're a decade behind X11. Where is the promised better tearing etc when the font changes color while scrolling? I hope that there will be support for X11 for a while. I would change the linux distro to keep it.

How much I have understanding for #linux needs for #xserver replacement with #wayland it is far away from being done and I feel sometimes it is step back to 90s in terms of functionality. To get it working in headless container setup with vnc is more like engineering feast than easy job done. Not mentioning we don’t have alternative for #xrdp. How much someone might hate Microsoft, RDP protocol is superior to anything else. With this we have ditched in wayland setups, sound, remote printers, local drives, etc. I just want to cry 😢
