@netbsd@mastodon.sdf.org @jaypatelani@bsd.network Turn off WiFi? I don't have Ethernet connection for it. I do have a MediaTek MT7601U USB dodge which works on Linux fine but again won't work on NetBSD, recognized as USBgen1 device only. I found this https://github.com/MakwanaVihas/gsoc_2k22 for it but didn't know how to use it at all. It seemed like a practice and abandoned soon after published

It actually seemed even worse than before. Now if I am in #CTWM session as the default came with #NetBSD, after waking up from an S3 suspend, X session is lost with a blank screen, not even a cursor. wsconscfg -w switching away and back does not bring it back either. WiFi seems to be on and off as I saw before.

Still no good news with the freshly out #NetBSD 11.0 RELEASE. S3 suspend woke up with dead WiFi (Intel 8265, iwm driver), in addition to keyboard and touchpad as before on my #ThinkPad T470s. So basically dead machine and no way to reset unless long press power button for a hard reboot. Desktop usability needs more love. #runBSD #BSD #Unix #AskFedi

I accidentally came across this #MediaTek #MT7601U #WiFi driver for #NetBSD on GitHub: https://github.com/MakwanaVihas/gsoc_2k22 but it seems long abandoned. I wonder if someone knows how to use it. I actually have such a USB WiFi dodge, and since the #iwm driver works on and off for my Intel 8260 card on NetBSD I think I can give this a try maybe. #RunBSD #BSD #Unix

Is not it still in discussion? Options are listed but there is not "ban" or "just do it" recommendation now. CC: @hywan@floss.social

Yes, just check https://download.freebsd.org/releases/amd64/amd64/ISO-IMAGES/15.1/ and there they are!

Well this is actually fun! I did not expected it to "just work" since the desktop only has 32GB RAM and no usable GPU at all for the model! Although it is barely usable because of the high CPU spike when the model is 'thinking', but for a PC with better specs I guess it will run smoothly.

I checked the workstation in our lab running #Debian #Linux stable, which mainly is for my own usage most of the time, had three versions of kernels updated for the past month. And yet it had not caught up with the latest CVE reports. This is really unusual🫣

I am impressed that#Void #Linux already has the new kernel for the "copy fail" #CVE fix today, since #Debain stable also rolled out it today too but I suppose Debian community is much more bigger and experienced

I only realize today that the widely used #conda environment tools can only be used under #FreeBSD via the #Linux compact layer. For people not familiar with it, it is kind of like the #venv or #virtualenv tools, allowing multiple versions of #Python coexist. I used #conda, mainly #miniforge or #mambaforge because besides Python, conda also supports #R enrironments. I daily use R #ggplot2 figures generated from animal models and cellular experiments, as well as various #Bioinformatics tools. It is a shock to me conda does not natively support #BSD systems.

I had to replace #FreeBSD with #Linux on my old laptop at home serving as a streaming server for movies mainly. The only reason is low internet speed. The laptop came with an Intel Corporation Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 Plus Bluetooth wireless card, both the iwn and iwlwifi successfully bring it up and connect. However, neither driver worked well enough to achieve as fast as 1M/s speen when downloading large files. After installing #Debian downloading speed easily goes up to as 2M/s when downlading the same large files.

It seems to me the the bit about #Plasma #KDE in the #FreeBSD #Handbook Chapter 8. Desktop Environments could use some better phrasing:

To install the Plasma desktop with a basic set of KDE Applications, execute: pkg install kde
Additional KDE Applications are tagged with the kde-applications category.
To install a minimal Plasma desktop, execute: pkg install plasma6-plasma.
This installation is really minimal. The Konsole terminal emulator must be installed separately executing: pkg install konsole.
One would suspect that the plasma6-plasma option should be the minimal desktop session for the desktop environment. However, when I try it in a VM running 15.0-RELEASE-p4 with base #Xorg and #CWM installed, the pkg instak kde reported 541 new packages were to be downloaded and installed, while pkg install plasma6-plasma reported 572.

@scott@mastodon.clitheroe.ca They bundled a pretty slick theme for #CTWM in #NetBSD, which is simple but big improvement for out of box user experience.

@joel@bsd.cafe I mean I did try upgrading from 13.2 to 14.3 just by freebsd-update a few days ago in a #vm. It went well. Though it was a very minimal setting environment, I didn't got many packages installed on the VM
