Pt. 2 of the Gentoo install report. There was a bit of functionality lacking, so i decided to switch profile (from barebone to desktop OpenRC), which is pretty straightforward. My 6.8 of dwm was pretty vanilla, only all required patches were there, so i've started on editing the config.def.h, also good. And the first kernel update arrived, testing ugrd and automatic initramfs update. Well, it didn't, obviously 🤣 I could, eventually, through my carefully written-down install command. I'll put it in an alias. And then I spent an exorbitant amount of time on Gruvbox and slstatus. Very well spent! #archlabs #gentoo

Greg Kroah-Hartman: "If you look there are thousands of unfixed CVEs in the older LTS kernels right now, and if distros or users that rely on those older branches wish to see those resolved, they need to provide working backports to us to apply, as our first attempt did not work (which is why they are unfixed in those branches.)" Really asking for a "Pray tell us", given that nobody actually bothered disclosing the problem to downstreams and that the commit message was hiding it. Either way, apparently the great LLM-backed patch backporting process that #NVidia is so proud of doesn't really work. Auch schon wieder 20 Jahre her 😏 Ich musste noch ein Post-it an meinen Laptop mit "Nicht ausschalten! Kompiliert gerade!!!" kleben, damit mein Vater nicht - in seinem Stromsparwahn - das Laptop auschaltete, während ein Systemupdate lief. #Gentoo

Now here's the fun part. After my successfull Gentoo reinstall yesterday I came across a great tuto on setting up Larry with encryption et al. Of course 😂 And that's actually a must-have on this laptop. The setup uses systemd, which is also a first for me on Gentoo (I've always used OpenRC prior). My updated dwm will get pushed to my Codeberg and pulled back in later on, so that effort isn't wasted. Here we go again 🤣 #gentoo

Gentoo moves too! In recent days, weeks, months, the fallout hasn't even begun - Microsoft is still weathering the blast itself. Even in the last couple of days viral videos are racking up millions of views covering what many people are hailing as the demise of Microsoft itself - to be certain, no one is shedding any tears. The first two defectors? HP and Samsung (PCs and Androids). Samsung removed preinstalled Microsoft apps from their devices and now other Android manufacturers are following suit. When you go to purchase an HP laptop now it comes with Linux by default (or you can, upon request, pay more for a Microsoft operating system). Following suit were Dell (same thing, Linux by default or your can request Windows 11 and pay more money for it), then Lenovo, ASUS, and Acer - pretty much everyone that matters has abandoned Microsoft. Even the retailers are bugging out - Best Buy, Walmart, and even Amazon are jumping ship, and I don't even need to explain why, but again, you can pay more to be subjected to invasive privacy mining. CoPilot and Recall may be the straws that broke the behemoth's back. And the shockwaves of ever larger concentric circles have found their way to Gentoo, the latest prominent project to begin the migration to CodeBerg according to Linux Journal. Adherence to the values of privacy and open source are cited, and Codeberg champions those values, themselves having moved to a hosted git software project that values those principles - Forgejo. There's a huge paradigmatic shift occurring with respect to how people view their privacy, and especially their identities and intellectual property. They've had enough of the dismissive subjugation and are realizing they can do much better, faster, with more privacy, and without tracking or malware pre-installed in their systems, for much less money. It will be interesting to see how the Redmond Dreadnought manages to maneuver this time; have they even the use of their rudder to persuade all of the major manufacturers of Android devices, desktop and laptop PCs to come back from the pasture into the slaughterhouse? #tallship #Gentoo #Codeberg #Forgejo #FOSS #Privacy

Been reading "How Linux Works" by Brian Ward and it makes me want to install Arch / Gentoo / LFS despite knowing that this is a terrible idea for a computer I want to y'know, use. How do people deal with systems they just want to play with for sysadmin stuff? VMs / containers? Homelab? I have hardware I could play with. #homelab #linux #arch #gentoo #lfs
