I've updated my tutorial on how to enable SecureBoot on Gentoo using shim & GRUB, there's a few significant changes compared to the first version I made:
- There are less manual steps as I rely more on the improvements in Gentoo's GRUB package
- There is no need to regenerate the bootloader when installing or removing kernels
- Post-install scripts are provided to automatically update both bootloaders

Did I ever announce gentoo-kernel-modprep? It's the newest variation on #Gentoo Distribution Kernels: the absolute minimum kernel tree necessary for building modules. Ideal for package-building containers where a full kernel is unnecessary, yet you need to be able to build kernel modules.

Hello Fedi! My employer went through my #PostCovid time with me. Now that I'm back to work full time, they suddenly decided to let me go. 🤷♀️ I'm a #pentester with 5 years of experience in the field, before that 3 years of software dev in the #infosec field as well. Got a Bsc. in Computer Sience with emphasis on infosec and networke systems. In my #homelab I'm selfhosting on #proxmox and #k8s. I've been daily driving #linux for the past 20 years, first #gentoo, then #fedora. I'm pretty good with it, but no certs. I'm looking to continue in #offensivesecurity, but would be happy to pivot into infra/network or any other adventure given it's interessting or a good cause. Happy to invest in my skillset. Hybrid in north-eastern #Switzerland fully remote anywhere else.

I tu zaczynają się jaja jakieś.
Na koncie root on się najwyraźniej odpala, jak root przełączy się na usera to tam też, ale jak otworzę terminal usera ot tak to tam jest inne $PATH ... może zawsze było inne, tego nie wiem ale ~/.local/bin/ działało!
Co spartaczyłem? :D

So. Hauptrechner läuft mit EndeavourOS (Arch), Laptop 1 läuft mit Linux Mint mit XFCE und Liquorix-Kernel. Laptop 2 kriegt jetzt Fedora XFCE. Vielleicht auch den LQX-Kernel.
Damit kann ich wohl behaupten, alle relevanten Linux-Distributionen einigermaßen zu beherrschen.
Gentoo und Slackware laufen aktuell nur in der VM bei mir.

Zero days since #CPython broke the extension ABI at the very last minute after asking everyone repeatedly to test prereleases. And of course they don't bother tracking ABI changes in any way, so they could at least give people heads up that important pieces of their system will start segfaulting after the upgrade. All they can offer is a knee-jerk response of "we never promised ABI stability".
And yes, this is a huge PITA for #Gentoo users who opted in to helping out.

My decade-old Brother PT-2700 working on Gentoo Linux with both the command-line ptouch-print utility and the graphical ptouch-rs [Rust] application. I also built ptouch-rs successfully on a Raspberry Pi 4 running Raspberry Pi OS "Trixie.".

Zero days since 83 #Gentoo developers effectively lost push access over revoked PGP key signatures because of random #LDAP hiccup.
Yes, we have error handling. And yes, we have a safety check in case error handling didn't work and LDAP returned empty list of developers. Yet apparently that's not enough either, so now we also check if the diff between old and new lists isn't too large; you know, in case ldapsearch randomly returned a subset of developers and considered it a success.

Thank you all for all the help in the linked post. I installed Gentoo successfully twice, first with a non desktop and then with a desktop stage file/profile. However, mostly because of how my brain works and because of my priorities, I decided to go with Artix instead. Knowing the extent of customization and optimization that can - or could - be done with USE flags and kernel parameters, I can’t help myself from wanting to tailor every single aspect of the system. I try to anticipate what software, use case and compatibility I’m possibly going to need in the future and try to adjust the USE flags accordingly. But after compiling, I realize that I have missed a flag or some flags, sometimes ones that impact the system quite extensively, and so I redo everything immediately. And when I realize that the system cannot easily be reverted or adjusted and that it’s easier to switch profiles, I reinstall the whole thing. My brain is just not made for such granularity. 🤣😭
Gentoo seems amazing. The feeling of having a system that is completely tailored to ones needs and wishes must be beyond this world!

Trying out Gentoo shortly. Any advice for a smooth(er) sailing?
I have been using Arch with systemd for some years now and I would like to try out Gentoo in order to learn OpenRC and get used to manually controlling the system with config files instead of having it all served on a silver platter with some *ctl command as per systemd.
I have read the installation guide for x86_64 systems two times now, and in the following week, I would like to try installing a minimal system (no graphical stuff).
Any advice from people that already use Gentoo? Especially things that they wish they knew before trying for the first time? Like, what not to waste time on initially? For example, to simply get an Arch system up and running, I didn’t have to learn how to write unit files, but I accidentally wasted a week on that before just enjoying my system first. 😅
A few of my own thoughts:
How much time and effort should I put into fine tuning the global USE flags if my initial goal is to get a system up and running?
With systemd, I enable --nowed that which I wanted to “autostart” (iptables and sshd, for instance). Is there an equally intuitive counterpart with OpenRC?
