#Python in a nutshell:

1. Let's use this new fancy #TOML thing for everything, it's so cool!
2. Everyone starts depending on third-party TOML libraries.
3. TOML library is finally added to the standard library, so people are moving to conditionally using it.
4. As old versions of Python become irrelevant, people are finally dropping fallbacks to the third-party library.
5. TOML 1.1 is introduced, and everyone has to start using a third-party library again… (at least until Python 3.15)

That's in case anyone is wondering why dev-python/tomli is suddenly getting installed on #Gentoo systems again.

#DHH's #Omarchy again This year I first heard of Gentoo Linux, and in my journey of learning about Gentoo I quickly discovered the YouTube channel "Mental Outlaw" which produces helpful Gentoo content. A few days ago, he made a video about Omarchy. My first reaction was displeasure before I noticed he doesn't shill (at least not so obviously) for Omarchy but dunks quite a bit on it. I'm still disappointed. Unlike others (such as NetworkChuck), he doesn't glorify Omarchy but points out all the technical issues, like the insecure Docker configuration, and the fact that it's entirely vibe-coded, etc. The first few minutes, before he dives into the many technical issues with Omarchy, he even describes the entire story with the (as far as I know, still non-existent) Omacom Foundation: that it's a bunch of fascist billionaires funding this project. He even shows the vile racist blog posts by DHH where DHH calls for "wolves to be shot" and "gypsies" to be deported, etc. He shows the StopOmarchy website. But, as a person of color himself, he then surprisingly(?) makes the mental gymnastics of saying, "politics don't interest me" and "yes, they all are fascists, but I don't care about that, I care only about Omarchy's technical issues". And then goes on to showcasing "AI" agents. I don't understand it. I don't understand people. Even those who seemed reasonable enough. Even those who see all issues and even point them out … but then make a hard turn, and give in to using "AI" agents and ignore the glaring fascism. With Gentoo being a niche distribution, there isn't so much content on YouTube about it. I used to enjoy watching "Mental Outlaw" for Gentoo content (for entertainment), but I cannot enjoy it anymore. The reason I became interested in Gentoo in the first place is because I want to escape from having to use systemd which has taken a grip on almost every Linux distribution. I hesitated to write this comment because—big news, another one shills for fascism. Will I write a comment for every single tech YouTuber? It obviously still needs to be said though: If you don't care about "politics" in 2026, you're a privileged "fuck you, I got mine" asshole. Zero days since it turned out that #GnuPG has arbitrarily changed behavior between versions in the name of "safe default", and required you to pass an additional option to make it behave properly in the rare cases it matters. Of course we still need to support old versions and alternative implementations without that option. A question for you kind folk: What would be the best filesystem to use on a partition to be shared by NetBSD and Gentoo? I'm planning to set up a dual boot system to sort of A/B test them to see which works best for me for different things, and I'd like a data partition that they can both use. Day 5: Not much going on other than tweaking KDE desktop, some .conf files, emerging missing packages, cleaning up some USE flags that really isn't needed at all in first place depending on desktop/linux profile which was already enabled by default. Fixed boot sequence by disabling UEFI logo in mobo which is now faster: (UFEI POST message -> Gentoo GRUB -> Plymouth Boot Splash Screen -> Login Screen -> Splash Screen Tweaked Librewolf to use tabs on vertical sidebar rather than toolbar with expanding on hover, I think it's starting to grow on me. MORE SPACE in horizontal screen! KDE Frameworks is behind update other than the new KDE Plasma 6.7.5 (I will figure this one out eventually) /boot and /efi is still a hot mess thanks to some confusions from the Handbook, maybe I will redo it next time as I do not want to mess that part lol #Gentoo #Linux #OpenRC #systemdless #Wayland #KDE #PostInstallation #Handbook

OK #linux people, I need some advice. At the start of last year, I pitched Windows for Ubuntu and have been quite happy with it, but I'm disappointed with Canonical's decision to embrace #AI, and was looking for other distros to hop to. I was planning Debian, but they just voted to allow for "responsible" AI contributions (LOL, have you ever met anyone who would admit to being irresponsible in mixed company?!) I was looking at #Gentoo but that might be over my head. Recommendations? 1/2

Still no 100% clear option for me to avoid #AI with #Debian's decision. I had read that @gentoo@fosstodon.org had an anit-AI stance. But I just read the entire thing: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Project:Council/AI_policy It's the first OS statement I've read that specifically mentions the ethical issues. That makes me happy. No idea what will happen with the linux kernel in #Gentoo, but for the moment it seems like a legit option. Time will tell

I've updated my tutorial on how to enable SecureBoot on Gentoo using shim & GRUB, there's a few significant changes compared to the first version I made:

• There are less manual steps as I rely more on the improvements in Gentoo's GRUB package
• There is no need to regenerate the bootloader when installing or removing kernels
• Post-install scripts are provided to automatically update both bootloaders

Is there a way to disable my second monitor while in a tty, or at least scale the output on my main monitor? My main monitor is 2160p, but my second monitor is only 1080p, so the terminal only fills the top-left corner which is really annoying. ​​ #Linux #Gentoo #TTY
