Hmmm... it looks like @Stuxhost@mstdn.social may fit the bill. https://Stuxhost.com says they're based in the Netherlands 👍 and that you can choose servers in Germany / Finland 👍 and @stux@mstdn.social is here on the Fedi 👍 . (Sidenote, when I've talked to Stux, they've been lovely 👍 👍 ) The only thing I'm wondering about is if there's any easy way to install / upgrade / maintain Mastodon? 🤔 If I need to I can install Yunohost like on my other servers, but I'd really like to avoid having to maintain yet another server for a service that sounds trickier than most to maintain... #Mastodon #Hosting #Selfhosting #StuxHost #Yunohost

Finally! I repurposed an old ThinkPad T400 as a YunoHost server for personal use. I don't have any apps installed yet, but I'm planning on installing GoToSocial and Nextcloud. Thanks @_elena@mastodon.social for the awesome blog articles describing how to install YunoHost! https://blog.elenarossini.com/a-newbies-guide-to-self-hosting-with-yunohost/ #selfhosting #yunohost #gotosocial #nextcloud

WordPress and ActivityPub: my first fail @selfhosted I've already posted about my success and fail in the past, but I have something else to talk about: ActivityPub fails in my self hosted WordPress (hostinger vps). Setup: YunoHost, WordPress multisite. For a multisite network, YunoHost requires WordPress to reside in a folder. Such as "domain .ext /folder" and not "site1 . domain .ext" or "site2 .domain .ext" Started setup, the site apparently works. But, before involving a co-worker to help me with theme, I wanted to try installing ActivityPub plugin first. Immediately WordPress health system, warned that endpoint webfinger wasn't accessible. Watching the logs, it was YunoHost ssowat and I tried to comment it on domain's nginx file - /etc/nginx/config.d/domain.ext.conf Result, from 302 error, it returned 500. "error establishing database connection". The .well-known stays on /var/www/.well-known, while WordPress lives on /var/www/wordpress__3 I set all YunoHost's permissions to "visitors" I really don't know where to go, at the moment. #ActivityPub #AskFedi #FediHelp #selfhost #selfhosting #WordPress #YunoHost

Good morning Fedi friends, I have been feeling a rising anxiety over the state of the open web and the fediverse - after seeing efforts by politicians all over the world (in Europe too!) to introduce age verification laws for social media. My way of coping? Teaching people how to self-host their own Fediverse profile (using the superb #GoToSocial) via #YunoHost. Chapter 1 in this series is available here: 🔗 : https://blog.elenarossini.com/a-newbies-guide-to-self-hosting-gotosocial-part-1-installation-and-set-up/ #resist #blog #ActivityPub #selfhosting

📣 New post 📝 "A newbie's guide to self-hosting: GoToSocial part 1 (installation and set-up)" 🔗: https://blog.elenarossini.com/a-newbies-guide-to-self-hosting-gotosocial-part-1-installation-and-set-up/ Basically a visual guide showing how to install #GoToSocial via #YunoHost and set it up with some basic security. ⏱️ From start to finish, it should take about 25-30 minutes. It's my act of resistance against tech bros... I love the idea of teaching people how to self-host their own social media instance, connected to the fediverse ✌️❤️ :GoToSocial: Thank you @yunohost@toot.aquilenet.fr  and @gotosocial@gts.superseriousbusiness.org for empowering us all! #SelfHosting #Fediverse #newbie #MySoCalledSudoLife #blog #resist

Today, I updated the documentation for installing a relay (Docker, manual, automatic script). Behind the scenes, I reproduced each installation to adapt and fix the doc. Yes, the official #HolosSocial relay is coming to production after a long 10 months of work. The #YunoHost package will come next. Around 800 users on a relay is a small number of GB, everything is optimised, and it can run on a small VPS. I am quite proud of this work. Thank you for making it possible with your support.

RE: https://mastodon.social/@_elena/116929510685583647 Installed #yunohost yesterday on my Proxmox home server to fiddle around and was about to deploy #GoToSocial. But this "Danger" Box in the docs, saying the domain will be taken forever by this instance of GTS scares me. Or is this the case for every #ActivityPub Server anyway? I thought, only the full handle like "@user@social.domain.net" can be problematic when being refused because of caching and generated keys. Any experience with that? https://docs.gotosocial.org/en/v0.22.0/getting_started/ #selfhosting

Working on a brand new post for my series "a newbie's guide to self-hosting with #YunoHost" - showing people how to set up their own #GoToSocial microblogging instance. Sorry it's been taking a while: I started over when I realized most people use subdomains... and I'm doing a thorough step-by-step explainer that any newbie could follow - I hope 😅 The whole series is available here: 🔗 : https://blog.elenarossini.com/a-newbies-guide-to-self-hosting-with-yunohost/ #SelfHosting #MySoCalledSudoLife #blog

Have setup a server with #YunoHost and really liking it so far. It gives me the #Selfhosting projects that I want that I can manage now that selfhosting is a little burdensome with my version Parkinson's. I was considering downsizing my selfhosting menu because I was afraid of catastrophic loss due to poor digit control of my hands and using the terminal for even the most simple tasks. May soon migrate my Mastodon instance... I have all this bandwidth due to needing business class internet in my home. Hate to waste it, not to mention I have unlimited storage space because due to selfhosted hardware. @yunohost@toot.aquilenet.fr

The amazing folks at @yunohost@toot.aquilenet.fr are running a fundraising campaign to cover their operating costs for 2026. I personally make a monthly recurring donation to them but wish I could give more 🥲 If you use their services and you can afford it, please consider donating to their project. #yunohost #internet #web #logicielLibre #linux #technofascisme

Self hosting: real game starts today @selfhosted So, it's done: my main domain has finally got its transfer to Hostinger, new provider where I have the VPS I'm experimenting in. Real game with WordPress multisite/multilingual and self-hosted Fediverse starts TODAY! #activitypub #selfhost #selfhosting #wordpress #yunohost

Good morning Fedi friends! On the agenda today: writing a first draft explaining to newbies how to self-host #GoToSocial with the help of #YunoHost. Now, to do a step-by-step installation guide I need to create a brand new account, so I can document everything. I'm a little stressed out thinking of which domain name to use and the fact it would be something like my 20th - yes TWENTIETH - ActivityPub account!!! 🫠 The things you do for the love of the fediverse 😅 #MySoCalledSudoLife #SelfHosting

European institutions seem to be all in when it comes to introducing age verification mandates for citizens in member states: https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/library/commission-sets-out-common-approach-eu-wide-age-verification-technologies I now have daily anxiety thinking about the future of the fediverse. So how do I channel this fear and turn it into something constructive? I'm going back to writing #selfhosting guides for newbies. It's a great distraction, which gives me a bit of hope. Especially the next guide, which will cover my favorite fediverse software - #GoToSocial (which is powering this instance) - and how to install and configure it. Your own little home on the fediverse! Lightweight and features-packed. Surely something like this would fall outside the scope of regulation. Right? Right? #MySoCalledSudoLife #YunoHost #VPS #AgeVerification #privacy #EUBigTech

@selfhosted @_elena@mastodon.social DONE!!! FINALLY! Multi-site works, and fun can begin! Our presentation page is up, and I'm impressed as the site seems super-fast. I won't try activitypub at the moment, maybe next week. Content for now, no visuals, it's still the default WordPress theme; I'll however continue using Gutenberg block editor for site design, sighted lady will help me with styles, sizes, colors, flags, logo. For now I have what I need: my best friend in POSITIVE (pun very intended) mood ☣️ and my intermediate web dev technical skills, let me build nav bar and HIV glossary before anything else, testing new multi-language echosystem. Before starting involving the sighted designer I want the interface to work properly. ENGLISH https://plusbrothers.net/english/about/ ITALIANO: https://plusbrothers.net/cosa-facciamo Detail: I had to create a solo Nginx conf file to instruct it to accept main URL, placed on /etc/nginx/conf.d/plusbrothers.net.d/; I can't deny or hide that for this, AI helped. And precisely, the Hostinger embedded chatbot, trained with main provider base configurations. Unfortunately YunoHost has a limitation and wants WordPress to be installed into a subdirectory such as domain dot tld slash wp. And leaving it as it is, with its /wp/ at the end of each content, would have generated 404 errors to folks searching for old posts. I wanted to have at least the presentation page published, within July 3rd - the day where New York Times in 1981 talked of HIV for the first time, identifying it as an untreatable disease affecting 41 homosexual men. And the weird destiny is that my best friend, and content writer for this project, was born July 3rd 1975. 6 years later AIDS come out in the USA. He's gay, and turned poz (HIV+) in 2013 due to a cheating partner. #selfhosting #yunohost #wordpress

Journey with self hosting for personal blog and fediverse @selfhosted Hello, I followed the "selfhosted" instance on LemmyWorld in order to be able to talk about my experiences having them in order, without confusing criteria into Fediverse. Hoping they can be useful to others. Current setup: Hostinger vps kvm2 plan, Debian12, YunoHost, Hostinger's docker manager installed. Personal background: blind since birth, (I don't see), I'm mostly a computer power-user, worked and studied with ms-dos since 1989 until late 90s. Basic GNU/Linux knowledge in 2002, then interrupted in 2004. I don't care talking about disability when discussing unrelated topics but it's necessary in this case as my needs are quite different from others. So, I've been scared by self-hosting and have had shared hosting web sites until now. Until @_elena@mastodon.social started self hosting her digital echosystem from scratch using YunoHost. Due to lack of drivers I stopped with Linux on my private machine, drivers for the Braille display I had, and then the uneffective (at least for my need) screen reader capabilities on Linux's GUI based distros. Finally in January 2026 I jumped in the dark after reading Elena Rossini's blog about YunoHost and having explored their demo pages. At the worst, I'll cancel the contract... In the end I've managed to run WriteFreely, WordPress, CastoPod and GoToSocial, just by YunoHost; but if someone says terminal knowledge is not needed, this is a complete lie. Where a system (such as YunoHost) can do the dirty work configuring postfix and nginx, I'll support it but it has its disadvantages: not every app can be installed through it. For me it's very difficult to create and look after a config file on my own, it's frustrating for a sighted to miss a punctuation sign, an apostrophe, an indent. Let alone for me! A single space skipped, can crash a system. A lie even saying that AI completely helps. It does solve some small, simple, immediate tasks but it has some mistakes as well. The so-called allucinations which create a real mess if you can rely on no personal skill. Such as "sudo yunohost tools cert-install", or similar. AI wrote "cert-install" while the real command is "cert install"! A power user can get rid of it and correct, a beginner with no command-line knowledge, just copies, pastes, and gets scared. My late attempt has been Madblog, a static markdown-based blogging platform with Fediverse activitypub in it, so I learned what Docker is and how it basically works. But I gave up, due to several timeouts and activitypub slow-downs. I think I'm going to use WordPress for blogging then. In case of comments it'll be more intuitive for non-fediverse folks. Hopefully share others' experiences as well! Updating this one: experience is evolving. #ActivityPub #blind #fediverse #introduction #selfhost #selfhosting #WordPress #YunoHost

Self-hosting journey update, and WordPress: latest development from a super-newbie @selfhosted I must recap as I set my instance to delete 2-weeks-old posts. Months ago, I talked about my very first journey with self-hosting my digital services, including my website. As I'm not very skilled with sysadmin stuff, I use a YunoHost installation with all its pros and cons. Having severe accessibility needs (I'm totally blind) I have limited choices for what concerns CMS software with related extensions if any. So after months of exploration and test, I've come back home. To WordPress. Last time I updated Fediverse about my experience, I was struggling with multisite network giving an unpleasant error in the non-main site, such as "too_many_redirects" Making it short, I discovered that YunoHost doesn't let me run a multisite properly when installed in a subdomain such as blog.domain.tld So I had forcefully to install it in the main domain, and a subdirectory such as domain.tld/wp Now I'm concentrating on my theme, I will clone it with the plugin "CreateBlockTheme" then activate it network-wide. I need a multisite for multilingual, as all current multilingual plugins have poor accessibility support, and are mostly paid. Then I may need a new taxonomy registered to organize stories, the glossary plugin, SEO plugin, ActivityPub, and I should be all set! The last, hard, challenge I have, is the fact that now my site runs into "domain.tld/permalink-post" for Italian, and "domain.tld/english" for English The new one should run "domain.tld/wp/post" and "domain.tld/wp/english/post" YunoHost doesn't let me build a WordPress site in the root directory with multisite installed, so I must find the way to tell nginx I want the product to be physically on /wp/ but browser can point to domain.tld/post or domain.tld/english/post... And if possible, this change to be in a file on its own, in order to be able to delete it without damaging the whole nginx conf. Last detail, I'm on hostinger, kvm2 package. vps. #experience #multisite #nginx #SelfHosting #WordPress #YunoHost
