I'm not a fan of bureaucracy.
I see the friction, the delays. Sometimes, it feels like an "industry" built to create pointless jobs. Yet, there are moments when regulation is vital.
Europe gives us the DMA, the GDPR, and a wave of other rules meant to protect us. Are they imperfect? Absolutely. They often overcomplicate things without giving us a real advantage. But it's something.
I don't believe in racing without a finish line. Progress is good, but not "at all costs". Every action has a reaction. We should be aware of it.
The EU system tries to safeguard citizens. Other hyper-growth countries take a different path, and the consequences can be brutal. Apparently more liberal, but only apparently. Imagine an American friend being denied health coverage because an AI on their device (or in the "cloud") flagged a text where they mentioned having a "persistent headache".
I've recently seen the real-world harm that targeted commercial algorithms can inflict on people in moments of fragility. That’s not the future I want.
Yes, Europe needs to accelerate.
But it must hold onto its core values. Leaner processes, sure, but zero compromises.
Just because my car can top well over 200 km/h doesn't mean I should drive at that speed everywhere, just for the sake of productivity.

Yesterday, one of the younger electricians was telling me about the beauty of the new alarm systems he installs. While acknowledging the quality of my current one, he said, "It uses a SIM card and calls you. The new ones are 4G or Wi-Fi and use the cloud, so notifications go straight to your smartphone, it's not calling anymore."
I asked him, "And what if the cloud stops working? Why should I have to depend on the company’s cloud to receive alerts from my alarm? My alarm is 10 years old and works perfectly. Can you say with certainty that the company’s cloud will still be effective 10 years from now?"
He looked puzzled for a moment, then admitted he had never thought about it.
The real problem is that people do not realize what this means until things actually happen.

I can't help it, I love beautiful, modern, minimal designs. Most user interfaces just don't appeal to me. Book apps, in particular, often feel old-fashioned. There's nothing wrong with old things though; retro tech from the 80s and 90s has its own charm, and people really knew how to make beautiful things back then.
But bad UI is a different story, it's clumsy, built with off-the-shelf frameworks without much thought, and often lacks proper design guidelines, plan or structure. That's why I can't use Bookwyrm, for example.
I read a lot and have mostly been using https://getbookshelf.com on iOS along with a CSV file since leaving Goodreads. Right now, I'm checking out alternatives. Even StoryGraph doesn't quite do it for me. https://margins.app looks promising, and Bookcover is okay but missing some features.
So, if in another world I decided to make my own fork and app, contribute to Bookwyrm, and completely refresh its UI like I did for Mastodon with the Mastodon Bird UI - what would you think of that?
