Where would you rather live? A large and well-furnished flat…but it’s a rental. How you can use it is decided by the landlord. Any modifications you want to make need to be approved by the landlord. They can increase the rent or kick you out at any time they want. Maybe the rent is low (for now), maybe the landlord is nice, but the fact remains - legally speaking, you’re at their mercy. A flat you own. It might be small, it might not have all the same luxuries, it might cost more upfront [1]…but it’s yours. There’s no limits on what you use it for (without affecting others), there’s no limits on how you can change it (without affecting others). And nobody can evict you whenever it strikes their fancy. This is a post about software freedom. [1] and the very existence of landlords and leasing is squarely to blame for that #FreeSoftware #OpenSource #FOSS #Decentralization #contraLibre

Extremely on-point post. https://mastodon.ar.al/@aral/116946253995217476 I preface each OSM talk/workshop I give with a little introduction/discussion about software freedom - what are the four freedoms, and why they are important for every user (especially nontechnical ones). But I recently changed it to have a slightly broader focus - the four freedoms, decentralization, and cooperative governance - with an overarching emphasis on, as Aral says, ownership and control. #contraLibre #FreeSoftware #Libre #OpenSource #FOSS #Decentralization #Cooperatives #Privacy
