VisualPTT - generated code to test high latency link delivery. Meaningful application where user can record message by keeping AltGr pressed down and on release, message is released as normal file for transport. When received, another end plays it back automatically. Operates fully offline, includes speech-to-text with whisper.cpp and annotates received video message. All this on Debian 13 laptop, without internet connectivity. A compelling article on the advantages of #Reticulum over #Meshtastic and #MeshCore: https://www.jonaharagon.com/posts/im-getting-into-mesh-networks-meshtastic-meshcore-and-reticulum/ Meshtastic and MeshCore make it relatively easy to set up local LoRa mesh networks, but in practice they remain largely tied to LoRa devices and messaging. Reticulum goes further: it can build a more resilient network by routing across different kinds of connections, including LoRa, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, microwave links and even the internet. Local networks can therefore interconnect while retaining alternative paths if one connection fails. Reticulum’s main disadvantage today is that standalone LoRa nodes generally need an attached computer running Reticulum. If #microReticulum can run directly on devices already used for Meshtastic and MeshCore, it could significantly accelerate Reticulum’s adoption. P.S. I did a test in Romania, #meshtastic vs #meshcore and here is the quick summary: Over 250 Meshtastic nodes found, compared to 70 Meshcore nodes. BUT Meshtastic was basically dead, no one talked, or answered anything. I only got one message with the following - "test" Compare that to Meshcore, where I got hundreds of messages and people where fast to give me recommendations regarding restaurants and places worth to visit. The meshcore coverage was also great, with some repeaters on mountain tops (2000 meters high) that connected the bigger cities to each other. Connection to Bulgaria and Serbia was also working great. My TL;DR conclusion is that people set up a Meshtastic node, then get bored and forget about it, while people that wants more, and really gets into offgrid-mesh moves over to Meshcore #romania #mesh #offgrid

I remember asking people at the last #FOSDEM about ways to communicate by radio in case of an Internet blackout. I explored a few possibilities, but no one mentioned #mesh networks, even though I'd first heard about them more than 10 years ago from an activist friend living in Pará, near the Amazon rainforest. A few weeks ago, I bookmarked a video on the topic. I finally watched it yesterday and discovered #Meshtastic. Since then, I've also come across #MeshCore, #Reticulum, and #atak. When it comes to communication, we seem to enjoy creating many different approaches. I hope these communities will find ways to interoperate and communicate with each other.

If the Internet disappeared tomorrow, what would still work, and how could we still communicate? I just watched a presentation by @vaurora@mstdn.social about the idea and would like to follow one of her suggestions: https://bowshock.nl/irc/#short-version Is there already an Internet Resiliency Club in #Berlin? I'm aware of #Freifunk and its established work. This seems broader and complementary: a group for practical experiments with mesh networks, offline communication, local services, and other ways to make communication more resilient. I suspect there are already people working on these ideas in Berlin, so I thought I'd ask here on the #Fediverse. I'll also reach out on nebenan.de to see if there's any local interest.
