I am back in the city again, using $0.03/KWh. I paid $4 for electricity last week, but I miss my #offgrid cabin in the country with zero utility bills. Oil and gas consumption in this country is NOT sustainable and requires subsidies for it to exist. I wish the electrical grid was subsidized and was absolutely free to share the crazy excess solar and battery power with my neighbors. So much power it is insane. My solar system is a smaller one, 10KW/KWh, but the average home uses only a kilowatt or two on average. What do you do with the rest of that surplus? You could open up the windows and doors while the heat/cold is running, charge the EV, run the clothes dryer, but there's still surplus. Stop supporting the unsustainable whale oil industry. The time could be now. Wars and borders would be a billionaire relic of the past. You want nuclear power, nuclear fusion from the sun is free and safe, but please use sunblock to keep your skin young and body healthy.

Well that was an interesting day. An #offgrid neighbour has one of Hugh Piggott's wind turbine designs (https://scoraigwind.co.uk/) It's been powering her house pretty reliably for the last 20 years. But that's a long time, so it was time to get it refurbished. Although Hugh is pretty much retired from this aspect of his career, he offered to do the refurbishment, which meant getting the incredibly heavy unit off the pole, and down to the pier at Scoraig (no roads there) 2/...

If your solar punk story doesn't have "solar panel cleaning", well you're missing out (in a tropical climate, the stuff on it is jungle gunk. In a dry climate, it would be dust. In a place that gets cold, you might be cleaning snow off it). Pro-tip: do not use harsh chemicals or sharp brushes on solar panels. To clean the ones pictured below, I used water, simple green, and a sponge. If you can't get close to your panels, you can use a sponge on the end of an extender. You can also use a pressure washer. Jungle gunk is very hardy, so I had to get it wet first, then spray with the simple green, then scrub a lot, with several rinse/scrub cycles. But the result was totally worth it! I did a test in Romania, #meshtastic vs #meshcore and here is the quick summary: Over 250 Meshtastic nodes found, compared to 70 Meshcore nodes. BUT Meshtastic was basically dead, no one talked, or answered anything. I only got one message with the following - "test" Compare that to Meshcore, where I got hundreds of messages and people where fast to give me recommendations regarding restaurants and places worth to visit. The meshcore coverage was also great, with some repeaters on mountain tops (2000 meters high) that connected the bigger cities to each other. Connection to Bulgaria and Serbia was also working great. My TL;DR conclusion is that people set up a Meshtastic node, then get bored and forget about it, while people that wants more, and really gets into offgrid-mesh moves over to Meshcore #romania #mesh #offgrid

Visiting my #offgrid cabin for the weekend. The wildflowers are taking over the solar garden! And the path to the front porch. The pollinators have done amazing growth to this garden since I was gone for months. I switched the solar system back into service and immediately the lights and air conditioner started before even switching onto the battery system. I had a long drive. I'm curled up in the bunk bed in the cabin in front of the air conditioner. I was surprised how cool it was inside before switching the solar power back on, but the wildflowers made this a very cool island of life in this wet bulb age. I shall now turn off the lights, watch a movie, and go to sleep 🥱

#TechieNotes Well, that's been fun. I reverted by 40+ years and converted a php script that uses ajax to display live info from our #offgrid power system (outputs, solar in, wind in, summary) to using cgi running a Yabasic program. It's more than 10x faster than the php it replaces and uses a lot fewer resources on the little Pi that monitors the power system. If I knew of a way of reading modbus/rs485 data using yabasic I'd tackle the slow python script that generates the underlying data too.

Or BLE/WiFi controls, so I can hack this myselfcan be sourced in DE (I have forwarding company that can ship it to me for reasonable price) I’m looking at OUPES Mega 1 or AFERIY Nomad1800 Pro Reasons mainly: Nominal ratings are close to peak AC rated power and surge covers well over that very cheap: ~450€ for ~1kW•h)can be expanded with extra batteries. However availability of OUPES B2 battery in EU is not clear and I’m still waiting for theirs pre-sale dept response~20ms switch time My uneducated research found only real downside of cheapo power stations is self-consumption and rough edges on warranty side. Warranty is, well, not much use for me, as I’m not in EU And tbf I’m fine with ~80% round-trip efficiency and 10% discharge rate. Any recommendations? Maybe I’m missing something? What's the deal with portable solar panels? Context: I'm looking to move further into the Mexican countryside (I'd be renting a house) where I'm told power outages are more frequent. I'm debating between no-break/UPS battery vs a proper #OffGrid setup vs a #PortableSolar setup. An off-grid setup seems formidably expensive, especially for a rented house, but does it make sense to get a portable battery + panel from, say, #Ecoflow (I see they have options in Mexico)? Their portable panels are priced significantly higher than fixed solar panels though. #AskFedi
