VisualPTT - generated code to test high latency link delivery. Meaningful application where user can record message by keeping AltGr pressed down and on release, message is released as normal file for transport. When received, another end plays it back automatically. Operates fully offline, includes speech-to-text with whisper.cpp and annotates received video message. All this on Debian 13 laptop, without internet connectivity. The concept of a #bugoutbag is a very common and popular one, when thinking about #survival and #preparedness, the first thing you should do is assess actual #risks. The likelihood of facing an actual #evacuation scenario is infinitesimal for anyone who doesn't live in a place with frequent natural #disasters and very small for those who do. Growing up on the East Coast, hurricane evacuations aren't unheard of. Once, while I was at college in PGH, there was a train derailment/chemical spill.

I see questions like this regularly, because I tend to hang around in places where #survivalism and #preparedness are discussed. If you are fretting over what (insert piece of gear) you should put in a #bugoutbag, a thing that by definition is something ready to go on a moment's notice and kept intact until and unless #evacuation is needed, first ask yourself whether or not its something you actually ought to be carrying on an #EDC basis. This is particularly true of #knives and #flashlights.

In a flashlight forum I frequent, someone asked what #flashlights they should buy for their family members' #survival #preparedness #bugoutbags. My response was to ask why their family members weren't already carrying #EDC flashlights and backup batteries for them. What kind of knife? Why aren't you already carrying an EDC knife? And what do you think you are going to actually need to cut? Don't even bother thinking about bugging out before you think about bugging *in* and everyday carry.

This kind of thing gets me riled up. Questions like this are malformed for a variety of reasons, starting with the idea that "bugging out" is a realistic thing for which you should prepare, and that a knife of some sort is an appropriate thing to put in a so-called "bugout bag". #survival #preparedness #knives #BugoutBags

Partial load out from this morning's ham radio event. Fully loaded first aid kit (my son's tactical backpack choice, I would have gone full neon), Weed whacker (unnecessary, there was a nice clearing for me to park), water (definitely handed a few out to the desperate walkers at the end...), jump box, duct tape. In the "auto" box a full kit for offroad ie strap, jumpers, tire repair kit, fuses, multimeter, zip ties... folding shovel, axe. In "health" the most important thing being toilet paper, lol. Also paper towels, etc. #preparedness #hamradio

Finland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Estonia are soon enabling offline debit card payments for at least seven days without network connectivity. The change covers payments for essential goods in physical trade, such as food, medicine, and fuel. Each country has made - or is in the process of making - the required changes to their related regulations to enable it. The motivation for this change is to enable payments even in exceptional situations such as network disruptions due to sabotage or conflict. TL;DR: You can pay for essentials even if Russia cuts the cables. Question for the #hiking and #preparedness crowd: Can you list the 10 essentials? My problem with the list is that 10 things is too many to remember. I think there's probably a condensed list that's easier to remember. I have a written checklist on my gear cabinet door that I usually at least glance at while packing but even so, it's 9 things, not 10.
