#ScribesAndMakers 3/17 What's a creative habit you've wanted to adopt but haven't yet? Well, I suppose I've always wanted to pick up an instrument for fun so I could just jam out after a hard day. Oh, wait. I DID do that! I think it was two years ago, more or less, that I bought myself a moderately priced (cheap) ukulele and started teaching myself. I'm not exactly top-notch, but I've put together a sizeable repertoire and it's wonderful to step onto my porch and strum a few tunes just to relax. My two latest additions were Simon & Garfunkle's "Sound of Silence" and Billy Bragg's "Help Save the Youth of America" Sorry if this is twisting the prompt a bit, but I couldn't think of a better response and wanted to acknowledge my persistence in developing a new skill that I didn't quite have before.

What’s a creative habit you’ve wanted to adopt but haven’t yet? I think the only 2 I haven't tried yet are pottery and painting. I played several instruments in my youth. Tried sketching. Never stuck with it long enough to develop proficiency beyond rough doodles. The lure of photography keeps me using my phone's camera occasionally. My Canon M1 lies ignored in a cupboard. Spent a lot of time doing fiber arts like knitting, crochet, and macrame. Even took up basket weaving for a time. I'm working on calligraphy by trying to get my daily penmanship up to snuff. I still type when I need to read it later At my age, I think my best bet is to double down on my current creative efforts and see how far I can go before I can't. I'm good with that. #ScribesAndMakers

#ScribesAndMakers 3/13. Our featured creator writes both novels and short stories. How do you feel about short fiction? Do you read short stories as often as novels? I can't write short. Literally can't. When I try the story just gets bigger. I haven't read short stories in years. #writing #writingCommunity

#ScribesAndMakers March 10. Reveal the answer to yesterday's poll. From yesterday's post: https://indieauthors.social/@willelm/116198879445694862 The next line is: "to catch them is my big test". It's from the Pokemon theme song. Good on the 60% of you who know your Pokemon.

#ScribesAndMakers 3/10. Reveal the answer to yesterday's poll I was a bit mean because the song is "State of Independence" by Jon & Vangelis, and Jon Anderson is known for writing obscure lyrics so attempting to choose what sounded most right was going to be tricky. One third got it right. So the line "State of life, may I live, may I love" was followed by "Coming out the sky, I name me a name" The other lines are: "Midnights become my afternoons" ~ Anti-Hero by Taylor Swift "Got me so blind I can't see" ~ Black Magic Woman by Santanna "It's a god-awful small affair" ~ Life on Mars by Bowie https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b-BHs7rcL_g #writing #writingCommunity

#ScribesAndMakers 7 Are you able to communicate in sign language? (Edit: removed a random 3.) Not effectively, no. I learned some rudimentary ASL through my job and can recognize some basic signs like toilet and thank you. At one point I knew the alphabet; I still remember some letters, but I've forgotten a lot since I don't use it often.

#ScribesAndMakers 3/7 Are you able to communicate in sign language? Not really, but I know some curse signs. My mom was a deaf ed teacher for a long time, so she is (or was at least) fluent. I learned the alphabet at one point, some random signs like tree, forest, turtle, bear, I love you, purple, father, mother, grandfather, grandmother, that's about it. I was fortunate enough to work a camp where we had several deaf campers and counselors. I still remember one of the young girls who was determined to learn to ride my unicycle and managed to get the hang of it by the end 😊

Are you able to communicate in sign language? Sadly, no. So many languages I don't know, can't speak. So many modes lost on me. I'm not even sure I can communicate effectively verbally. At least written communication gives me time to change my mind about what I might say before I actually - you know - say it. #ScribesAndMakers

#ScribesAndMakers 3/7. Are you able to communicate in sign language? I cannot. I had a friend when I was very young who was profoundly deaf so I got some basics. #writing #writingCommunity

#ScribesAndMakers day 6: How do you choose a title for your book? Usually the title comes first, and dictates the book to me. Rarely, the book comes first and I just slap any old title on it before sending it to my agent. Either way, it doesn't matter: per contract, the publisher has final say over what the book is titled on publication (and the cover and marketing copy). Although they only request a title change about 10% of the time and usually go with my second choice.

How do you choose a title for your book? No single path. Since I write novels in a series, they all relate to the series title somehow. Most often they come before the story, shaping the narrative. "Oh, that's a cool title. Wonder what book is behind it!" Occasionally, like this next one, I know it'll be The Wizard's Something but the final title? I have contenders but the finalist will have to wait until I'm further along in the writing. #ScribesAndMakers

#ScribesAndMakers Mar 6. How do you choose a title for your book? I really struggled with it. But I just made a list of possible terms and iterated them together until I found a few that I liked. Then I chose one.

#ScribesAndMakers 5 Mad Lib Reveal (and much silliness ensues) @guyjantic@infosec.exchange version: "I can't write," he said, casting a delicious glance at her before farting, two blobs protruding from his spleen. @gahlearner@sunny.garden version: "I can't crouch," he said, casting a sensible glance at her before touching, two horses protruding from his eyebrow. @willelm@indieauthors.social version: "I can't cut," he said, casting a spicy glance at her before dripping, two hats protruding from his leg. @samanthabwriter@mastodon.world version: "I can't scream," he said, casting a jumpy glance at her before soothing, two goslings protruding from his knee. @adaddinsane@mastodonapp.uk version: "I can't laugh," he said, casting a slimy glance at her before singing, two rabbits protruding from his toenail. @kagan@wandering.shop version: "I can't bring," he said, casting a loud glance at her before juggling, two people protruding from his spleen. @QuasiTemporal@wandering.shop version: "I can't fast," he said, casting a blue glance at her before confusing, two trees protruding from his eyelid. And the original line from The Night Plummer & The Mockemortician (published book instead of WIP): "I can't sleep," he said, casting a mournful glance at her before collapsing, two arrows protruding from his back.
