#ScribesAndMakers Jun 17 - Describe an idyllic garden. A natural and slightly unkempt space is my ideal. Trees, a stream, wild native flowers ...even those that are often regarded as "weeds". A place for the wildlife to congregate. On the subject of which, I had a fox 'sunbathing' in my garden a few weeks ago. Lying on its back, belly pointing to the sun. It was so motionless I though it was dead, but it jumped up and was off in an instant when it heard me opening the door. So, yeah that kind of thing ...a small bluebell wood with swooping finches, bunnies, and other disney-esque inhabitants. 🙂

#ScribesAndMakers June 16: Alix could finally see daylight... The main problem is that it was from entirely the wrong sun.

#ScribesAndMakers 14 June Most people [oppose] gatekeeping, but (aside from [keeping out] AI garbage), [should there be] any form of "quality control" [for] self-published work? I have read at least one trad-published recent book by an established author which was, for lack of a better word, crap. Well past just "I didn't like the story". I have read quite a few indie authors' books which have been great. "Quality control" or gatekeeping is clearly not the answer. #WritingCommunity

#ScribesAndMakers 6/14 Most people are opposed to gatekeeping, but (aside from the obvious need to keep out AI garbage), do you think there should be any form of "quality control" when it comes to self-published work? Every author should publish the best work they could. Sometimes there is room for improvement. I've read a few books that weren't great, but the story was good enough. I do read a lot of indie authors who use editors and produce work at least as good as trad. #WritingCommunity

#ScribesAndMakers May 16: Create a poll with three websites you reference for your creative work and one you don't. Ask people to guess the one you don't. Okay, which of these sites do I NOT use in my writing?

Google Maps
20.0% (3)
Writer Beware
20.0% (3)
timeanddate.com/weather
13.3% (2)
Yelp
46.7% (7)

#ScribesAndMakers May 17: Link to, reply to, or summarize yesterday's poll and reveal the answer. The top vote-getter was Yelp, which I found a bit surprising. I use Yelp fairly extensively, both to get diverse photos of the insides of places and occasionally to verify when they first opened or whether they'd gone out of business by a particular date. Anyone else who's writing in contemporary urban settings, consider that a free tip! 1/3

Naturally, I use Google Maps' street view a lot to verify details of exterior things, and the Time and Date weather records to know what the weather was like on any given date. (If I really need it to have been something different for the purposes of my story, I'll gladly rewrite history, but I want to know that I'm doing so and make that a deliberate choice.) 2/3 #ScribesAndMakers

I don't use Writer Beware... yet. I'm not at the stage where anyone's trying to take advantage of me, because I haven't got anything worth stealing. Yet. As I progress, I'm sure I'll eventually find it useful. https://sfwa.org/other-resources/writer-beware/ 3/3 #ScribesAndMakers

#ScribesAndMakers May 18: If someone were to write a character based on you, how often would exclamation marks be warranted in your dialogue? Exclamation marks, pretty rarely, I think. Italics? All over the place.

#ScribesAndMakers May 20: You have $100 (or the equivalent in your currency) to spend on something to support your creativity this month. How are you spending it? Probably on drinks while I'm out writing at some bar. I really don't have any other writing-related expenses; I own my laptop and all the software I use/need.

#ScribesAndMakers May 21: What medium would you choose to depict a visual image of a lake? Watercolor paint. [Edit: Wait, we're assuming I have to *use* the medium? Oops! Then probably photography! I was just thinking what medium I feel is best for depicting the subject, but assuming the medium is wielded by someone who's any good at it! 😅]

#ScribesAndMakers May 22: Which book world would you like to live in for a week, and why? Bordertown, from the Borderlands/Bordertown/Life on the Border series created by Terri Windling: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Borderland_(novel_series) Why? Okay, have you not _read_ any of these things? If you had, you wouldn't even need to ask; that world slaps!

#ScribesAndMakers May 23: If you were going to tell a story about a cryptid, which would you choose? I'm going with Nessie, because I think I might have fun with the Scottish Highland setting.

#ScribesAndMakers May 24: Warp? I'd been hearing about warp drives in sci-fi for years before I learned the concept of "warp and weft" in weaving. I'm still not sure whether I should feel embarrassed about that, or if it's actually pretty standard in the modern world.

#ScribesAndMakers May 25: Stella had been dreading this moment... ...when she would get on stage and sing karaoke. But with encouragement from her friends (okay, and a shot of whiskey), she got up there and took the mic. The KJ started her song. She could see Chelsea and Laura in the crowd, egging her on. Chelsea was pumping a fist. 1/2

She took a deep breath, came in right along with the first line, and... she had to admit, she didn't sound that bad. Holy shit! Three minutes later, the crowd was cheering. She rejoined Chelsea and Laura at their table and said, "I want to do that again!" 2/2 #ScribesAndMakers

#ScribesAndMakers May 26: Who's your favo(u)rite vampire? David from _The Lost Boys_ narrowly edges out Carmilla from Sheridan Le Fanu's eponymous novel... although I have to admit, I was tempted to say Count von Count, from _Sesame Street_!

#ScribesAndMakers May 27: What advice would you have for yourself on day one of this month if you could go back? Go ahead like you've been planning to; it'll work out pretty well.
