tl;dr: i want a foss replacement for roku - anybody have any experience making a diy streaming device?

#roku just got bought by #fox, eliminating the one "easy" streaming platform that wasn't owned by Google, Amazon, or apple.
I've been annoyed with Roku for a while anyway; pervasive ads, obnoxiously unconfigurable views with unhelpful unwanted menu items, etc.
but this lit a fire.
and yeah, I've googled, and yeah, I've done enough embedded stuff i could hack together something that works even without a guide, but i want to hear from you, dear reader; i want to hear what works from real live queer nerds.

The news of #Fox purchasing #Roku is quite depressing.
Apparently its #FoxCorp, the Fox News arm. At first I thought perhaps it was being brought under the #Disney owned arm of Fox but that's not the case.
This regime has all the big social media sites under their thumb. Their allies have purchased #CBS and now Roku. They have owned #Tubi for years.
They are stripping funding and punishing networks with dissenting viewpoints like #NPR and #PBS and #ABC
Time to disconnect my Roku TV from the network. Their not gonna get jack shit from me.
I'm not going to feed this machine.
I have had a media PC hooked up to the TV for the last couple of years and seldom used the TVs apps anyway. The PC is a much better experience.
I will certainly miss the TV guide though for OTA TV.

So, I have a few more of these, the foxy versions (of course). There is still the Eevee one with the large foxes on the outside where I will not get another fabric from. So it will be the last one I will have. Also the paws bag will be the last because I like the softshell material more and it does not have this print available.
I am sorry I can't really give a discount on these because everything is getting expensive constantly. But they are all paw made with love and very overengineered. Stuff should last, I only want to sell you one bag ever. Hm, bad for business.

Time for a (kinda)new character!
Nexus was originally created many years ago in the FSS Excalbur stories, as a supporting character for Swiftwind( https://meow.social/@dekafox/109322701761548432 ). Seeing some discussions recently reminded me of hir, and gave me the thought of giving hir some attention.
Shi is a stellar foxtaur, which is a dual-gendered genetically-engineered taur race similar to the chakats, and shares a bunch of traits with them. Other than the base species, the biggest difference is that there are 7 different sub-types, each optimized for a different environment. Nexus specifically is of the Starwalker sub-breed, which is designed specifically for living in space. Besides adjustments to prevent bone decalcification from long periods of freefall, starwalkers have special anti-radiation properties in their fur, golden secondary eyelids to protect their eyes from solar glare, heat-radiating surfaces in their ears, and even a specialized organ to store oxygen located in their tail.
The first time Nexus met Swiftwind was during hir midshipman's cruise aboard the FSS Potemkin, a Resolute-class destroyer. They kept in touch but didn't really become Companions until Swiftwind was beached for a short time, following a piloting incident. They met up back on Earth and then luck happened to place them both on the FSS Excalibur for it's maiden voyage. When Swiftwind left however, Nexus chose to stay on as Chief Engineer. Though they see each other far less than when they were sharing a ship, they are still Companions officially, and possibly more unofficially. Swiftwind has yet to bring the topic up though, and Nexus is not the sort to take the initiative in matters of the heart.

For #Taursday, another image of Nexus, this time from SadNicole(https://www.furaffinity.net/user/sadnicole/ )! Chief engineers seem to always end up in the Jeffries tubes at some point, despite having to run the entire engineering department, and Nexus is no exception. In hir case however, shi does like to purposefully engage in some hands-on work whenever time allows, so shi might end up in these a bit more often than one would think. Of course it helps that hir kind were designed to be able to work in exactly these kinds of spaces...
