Magnolias are truly the most fascinating of flowering trees!
These stunning plants evolved 95 million years ago, during the final period of the Mesozoic Era. Their ancestors shared the planet with the dinosaurs, long before bees even existed, which explains why their blossoms are so unusual.
There being no bees and butterflies to help with pollination, magnolias had to adapt to beetles, so instead of delicate flowering petals, they developed a double layer of thick, waxy, leathery 'tepals' ideal for bearing up to the mandibles and tramping of heavy-bodied beetles.
Magnolias are living fossils, descendants of some of the earliest flowering plants on earth.
