Dogs possess specific neural mechanisms that allow them to process and distinguish between various human facial expressions, such as happiness, fear, anger, and sadness. #Neuroscience #Ethology #EvolutionaryBiology #Psychology #Dogs #sflorg https://www.sflorg.com/2026/08/ns08112601.html

I really wanted to capture their energy and dynamism—lots of movement, water, and action. As always, constructive criticism is expressly welcome. #dogs #dogsofpixelfed #dogsofmastodon #photography #mixbreed #hunde #nature #hunderunde #nikon #fotografie #nikonphotography #adoptdontshop

Today at the SPCA I walked Roxy, Rainbow and Sheebie. Sheebie is new to the adoption block. She's a young German Shepherd, rather nervous and a bit mouthy. I think she's had some bad experiences, she's very wary. The grass was dry today so I sat on the ground in the dog run. Sheebie immediately came and excitedly licked my ear. Then, to my surprise, for she's an energetic dog, she lay down and put her head on my lap. After a few moments she gave a great big sigh, closed her eyes, and just lay there, completely relaxed. I think she's exhausted from all the noise of the kennel. I sat with her like that, stroking her, for a long time. Every now and then she looked up at me as if checking who I am. Roxy is still pulling hard on the leash, despite my attempts to train her. She's making excellent progress on the agility equipment though, she seems to enjoy that. We even started doing the see-saw, which most dogs find too off putting. She's a clever girl. #dogs #SPCADiary

At first, a very early walk through the cool woods this #mondog, because they’ve forecast another very hot week. Then a visit to our dog park to see if everything’s all right there. It was. At least there’s supposed to be a change in the weather next week. Let’s hope that’s the case. #dogs #dogsofmastodon #galgoespanol

Five dogs killed a man and injured another on a large NSW rural property What is the responsibility of the pet owner? What has the council done about unregistered roaming and barking pets? Could it be that a pedestrian/ bushwalker was unintentionally entering "the 117-hectare rural property" ? "Five dogs suspected of fatally attacking a man at a property in Sydney's south-west will be euthanased. NSW Police said the man suffered injuries consistent with being attacked by animals...Police were investigating if the man was an intruder." >> https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-08-08/dogs-supected-of-fatal-attack-in-sydney-to-be-euthanased/107012384 #ABCNews - How is 'the panoramic view' of the real estate relevant to a human being being ripped apart by five canines? 2 things. 1. If you are over 35 climate you grew up in (20th century) no longer exists, not coming back without restoration. 2. 5 yrs from now what we are experiencing will be the norm, 10 years out cooler than avg. Our extreme heat in July preceded by warm/dry OCT-APR already killing conifers vulnerable S-facing warm/dry slopes up to 2600m Lakefork Canyon. Longer periods of enhanced thermal belt effects 🔥. 28C at 2100m start our Canyon run, very dry. #climate #running #dogs #montana #mountains

Fire destroys everything around it, but it is powerless against genuine human warmth. Empathy and the preservation of humanity in extreme conditions are key indicators of the high discipline and psychological resilience of Ukrainian soldiers 🇺🇦 #ukraine #ukrainian #dog #dogsofmastodon #dogs

#HumpDay Hump day rearview of Kengo, etc. It stays relatively cool at 82f/28c after the rain. Most schools in the state resumed meaning ugly yellow school buses are a nuisance on the road. Coming home today took 80 minutes, ridiculous. #dog #dogs #DogsOfMastodon #AdoptDontShop #rescuedog #photography #FujiFilm #maple #;eaves #trees

🐕 TIL: Dogs copy us even when it makes zero sense. Half of dogs will touch a pointless dot on the wall or flip a dead lever before getting their treat, just because their person did it first. That behavior is overimitation, and researchers thought it was uniquely human. Great apes never do it. Dogs do it most with their own caregiver, which points to a social motive: copying keeps them in the game. The evidence is solid. Johnston et al. 2017 found half of dogs and dingoes copied both actions. Huber et al. 2018 replicated it in Vienna. A 2023 follow-up found 85% of overimitation happened after the dog already got the reward, which kills the confusion theory. Dogs also anticipate what their caregiver will do next and sync their behavior to match. A 2020 ethics review from Vetmeduni Vienna pulls this all together and argues it creates real duties: we owe dogs the chance to flourish, not just protection from harm. The catch: they will pick up your bad habits too. Copying "seemingly unproductive or dysfunctional" strategies is part of the package.
