Across 165 countries, the highest GHG emissions from diet are among highly educated urban men aged 15-34. Median is 5.7 kgCO2e/day, against 2.9 for rural women aged 35-54 with low education. In others words, the impact on climate is roughly double in a group with more resources, choice, and agency. Drying Lakebeds Are Releasing Massive Amounts of #Carbon, Study Finds The #AralSea Has Been Drying Up For 60 Years. New Research Shows It's Also Releasing Massive Amounts of Carbon The study estimates that between 1960 and 2022, the evaporating sea has released 204 megatons of #carbondioxide into the atmosphere, based on site surveys and core samples collected from across the dry lakebed. https://www.sciencealert.com/the-worlds-largest-dried-lakebed-is-leaking-vast-amounts-of-carbon-but-scientists-say-theres-a-solution #climate #climatechange

Happy birthday Rosalind Franklin (1920 – 1958), #chemist & x-ray #crystallographer whose x-ray diffraction images were instrumental to discovering double-helix structure of #DNA, made important contributions to #carbon & #virus research, was 1 of the great scientists of the 20th century. Watson’s bio lead some to (inaccurately) joke, “What did Watson and Crick discover?” “Rosalind Franklin’s notes.” While it’s important 🧵1/ #linocut #printmaking #WomenInSTEM #histsci #mastoArt #sciart

The expansion of LNG depends on the support of banks and asset managers who continue to pump unrestricted finance into the sector, with banks providing US$213 billion for LNG expansion between 2021 and 2023. The #report assesses financial flows (project financing and corporate financing) to and investments (bonds and equity) in the 150 largest LNG developers: https://reclaimfinance.org/site/en/2024/12/05/frozen-gas-boiling-planet-how-the-support-of-banks-and-investors-to-lng-fuels-a-climate-disaster/ #LNG #oilAndGas #energy #GHG #exports #emissions #carbon #methane #assets #capacity #commodities #ReclaimFinance

There is a lot of carbon being transferred from the land to the ocean, that has a big effect on how much carbon is stores where (if any). But over the last few decades, that flux has been increasing, often due to anthropogenic activity. Link: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41561-026-02034-w #Carbon #ClimateChange

An EU plan to tie free pollution permits to investments in decarbonization could enhance corporate accountability, investors said, despite concerns that a broad overhaul may weaken incentives to cut emissions. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/environment/2026/07/22/investors-pollution-plan-eu-carbon/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #environment #emissions #carbon #pollution #eu #environment #investments

💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: ☄️🧂 A #meteorite that crashed through a #NewJersey home in 2024 contained preserved salts and organic compounds from its parent #asteroid, evidence of ancient brines interacting with #carbon #chemistry. Researchers found amino acids and other #prebiotic #molecules in the rock. "Marginal improvements to #agricultural #soils around the world would store enough #carbon to keep the world within 1.5C of global heating, new research suggests." “Outside the f#arming sector, people do not understand how important soils are to the #climate,” said McGlade. “Changing farming could make soils carbon negative, making them absorb carbon, and reducing the cost of farming.” #SoilCarbonSequestration https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jul/04/improving-farming-soil-carbon-store-global-heating-target

Warming unlocks ancient carbon in Tibetan permafrost, triggering climate tipping point The results revealed a clear and troubling pattern across all warming levels. Even under low to moderate warming, #carbon losses through respiration outpaced photosynthetic carbon gains by 1–16-fold. Warming by +1°C, +2°C, and +4°C increased annual net #CO2 release by 44%, 80%, and 176%, respectively, and the site was a net carbon source before any experimental warming began. "When warming reaches around 2–4°C, the system changes fundamentally," Ding told Phys.org. "Plants begin to reach their thermal and water-stress limits, so photosynthesis declines. At the same time, thaw penetrates deeper into the #soil, exposing old #permafrost carbon that has been frozen and protected for hundreds to thousands of years. Once thawed, microbes can decompose it and release it as CO2." https://phys.org/news/2026-06-ancient-carbon-tibetan-permafrost-triggering.html #TippingPoint #Tibet #Himalaya #Uhhps
