#ClimateDiary The Times today, Saturday 25th July. Sums up this moment perfectly: the world is on fire, but the right and supporting media relentlessly push through their anti #NetZero agenda. I wonder whether extreme weather events this year and next - climate emergency in full swing! - will make any difference to current policy momentum. I fear not. But who knows. Burnham on #Rosebank will be indicative.

What we should we make of the decision on the Rosebank & Jackdaw oil field licences? here's a neat bit of analysis from Christian Guthier (LinkedIn) that suggests perhaps we should not worry too much & focus on the larger picture around energy & net zero pursued by the Andy Burnham administration.... the material reality looks a little different to the heat & light expended in much commentary, on both sides. #oil #politics #NetZero #ClimateChange

One aspect of Andy Burnham's continuity with Starmer's administration is the appointment of Miatta Fahnbulleh to replace Ed Miliband as he moves to the Foreign Office. Fahnbulleh has long advocated for an acceleration of progress towards Net Zero, is an ally of Miliband & as such can be expected to maintain his focus & direction at the Dep. to Energy Security & Net Zero... this 'continuity' looks most welcome; lets hope she can deliver on her previous commitment(s). #NetZero #politics h/t FT

So, Burnham is going to pump money into the military even though this is not what the public wants; and is going to stick two fingers up to #netzero because he thinks stupid British people are not capable of understanding the argument that renewables are the only way to go. Useless Twonk

An important story I think. Banks will become increasingly wary about lending to fossil fuel producers. The BoE here telling lenders that loans to coal producers are less likely to be repaid because technology could wipe those firms out. #NetZero #ClimateCrisis https://www.theguardian.com/business/2026/jul/19/bank-of-england-bonds-coal-loans-assets

Tomorrow the EU Commission will present revisions to the EU's Emissions Trading System, and after heavy lobbying we can expect: an expansion of ETS 'holidays' for firms who invest inside the EU; a shift of the outright ban on emissions from 2039 into the next decade (at least); relaxing the ratchet requiring annual lowered emissions from ETS permit holders.... There may be some good news on flights but overall, its likely to be a step backwards on Net Zero. #NetZero #emissions #EU h/t FT

“Hopefully just the sheer size of the numbers is really illustrating to people that this is something we need to be worrying about and preparing for,” “We can stop making it worse by transitioning towards #netzero, because that is not a political target, it’s a physics-based target. If we stop adding greenhouse gases, we stop adding warming and we stop making these #heatwaves worse.” Dr Clair Barnes, at Imperial College London, who led the analysis https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/jul/13/june-heatwave-killed-440-people-a-day-england-wales-data-suggests-climate-crisis

Even under Thatcher's, the #Conservatives were a broad church. Local parties controlled candidate selection. Many chose cautious moderates. #WilliamHague ended that. 0POV leadership elections, but centralised selection of candidates. #KemiBadenoch is extremist centraliser. She personally vetts all Tory candidates to pick only zealots. https://archive.is/srdBF #NetZero out. #ECHR out. No debate, no nuance. This zealotry has a ceiling of ~20% support. #Kemisphere is cohesive, but small. #ukpol

Big Tech’s bid to rewrite the rules on #NetZero "These tech giants are poised to become some of the biggest energy users of the future as they race to develop power-hungry artificial intelligence, potentially threatening their commitments to net zero. Ahead of that, they are working behind the scenes to shape a once-in-a-decade rewrite of the rules governing how pollution from power use is disclosed." https://www.ft.com/content/2d6fc319-2165-42fb-8de1-0edf1d765be3

“The #climate transition is one of the largest drivers of industrial job creation in the UK #economy. The #NetZero economy generates output worth over £100bn and employs over a million workers. Here's an uneasy question. Let's say we get to Net-Zero tomorrow, will the climate go back to how it was? The sad answer is, not in our lifetime, nor in the next millennium. But if we don't get to Net-Zero, things will get worse. (How and should we reverse emissions is a separate discussion) Link: https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1029/2025EF007730 #ClimateChange #NetZero
