I don't count the #heatwaves in France anymore. I only look for the "coldest" nights to sleep (under 22°C) and how to survive appointments in the outer oven. At 30°-33°C, I make a happy dance because it feels cooler than up to 40°C. I have overwhelming memories when and how I planted the trees I lost to the #drought. I'm sad to have lost an outdoor season and my natural feeling of time. If you want to count: officially we are at No 5 and no end visible. #climateCrisis #ClimateDiary #ecoGrief

I just wanted to cancel an important appointment because the extreme #heat makes me unable to go outside into that oven. Their answering machine was at the limit. They called me back: Yes, everybody wanted to cancel today but your appointment is tomorrow. It will be a little bit cooler then. If not, just call again tomorrow how you feel. #climateDiary The diagram below attempts to visualise what I see as a core misunderstanding of our power generation pathways. Our cultural expectations of the power available to us are set by the fossil fuels we have become accustomed to using. We do understand that the fuel source does not fit the safe operating space, but we have not adjusted our expectations, and those don’t fit either. (It’s not a remotely statistically sound Venn, so don’t get hung upon the radii or extents of overlap)

Good news!!! We have four swallows on the wire this morning. Our mating pair, last year’s young who has been helping all summer and one little fledging who made it through the dry weather!! The first two fledgings vanished in the drought and this survivor was the strongest of three in the next clutch. It’s a fragile achievement but bloody hell does it make me happy! #ClimateDiary #Swallows #BirdCallOut

#climateDiary “50 years after Carter’s speech, China has executed on what he asked of the West — without ever making environmentalism the justification. While Washington and Brussels argued about green and brown, Beijing simply built both. Whatever the climate benefits, China did not build 1.2 TW of solar capacity primarily for them. It built that capacity because it understood the MEOW lesson better than Carter’s own successors — security first, with decarbonization as a welcome dividend.”

A ‘short haul’ flight from London Heathrow to Berlin (also about 1,000 km), carrying 135 passengers, might emit 250 kg of CO2 (250g x 1,000 km). Which is about 1.85 kg per person. And that is a *carbon bomb* equivalent to 1 small incendiary dropped on Dresden in 1945. But it’s not a bomb, because we can’t see it, right? #climateDiary

Yesterday was a vision of the future: 38c at rush hour in a traffic jam on a narrow sunk channel of controlled-access black asphalt highway, each car a single fragile airconditioned bubble in a cauldron, churning out toxins & rippling heat. 1 jam turned into 4. 1 hour became 2. I started to run out of gas. Cell connectivity flickered. Then I had a random health emergency (better now thx, but I was not okay to drive). It was the 2nd time in 6 days that heat became life-threatening. #ClimateDiary

Current thoughts on collapse Hover or focus to reveal Sensitive
My kids are currently staying with my cousins on their smallholding. My cousins realised that we were in collapse a while ago and recently sold up and moved to the countryside. They are growing food and learning skills like composting and animal husbandry. Getting to know their neighbours including the local apothecary! I’ll be ordering this book and I don’t suppose there will be much in it that’s new for me. What it does feel like is an acknowledgment. The topic is hitting the mainstream and I will feel more confident to address it directly. I want my kids (they are older teenagers) to be fully briefed on what is happening. That’s what I can give them, a head start in processing the crazy time we live in, and half a chance at being able to cope mentally with things getting consistently worse over their lifetimes. I say to them, things will keep getting materially worse in your lifetimes but that doesn’t mean you won’t lead a fulfilling life. I know that sounds gloomy and maybe I’m wrong on this, but I think if they can get used to the situation now, they’ll be able to be what my cousin calls ‘a rock in the river’ and be there for others as they come to terms with things. Absolute carnage in Tesco this morning, most of the chiller cabinets seem to have failed in the heat so they're selling off everything they can half price. I just popped in to grab something for lunch but ended up grabbing a lot of discounted fresh produce and deli bits. I won this morning but in the long term we're all going to be the losers. #UKHeatwave #ClimateDiary #FoodSecurity

Sunday 8th Feb was the first dry day here for weeks, even a few minutes of sun. Rain in every 3hr segment forecast for the next 5 days, totaling 130mm. Yesterday I was too preoccupied with building polytunnel raised beds [🧵⬇️⬇️ ] to remember to do bulk laundry, bugger. On saturday evening, just as I was packing up that job, strong winds gusting from unusual direction - downslope - took-out the shade frame for the lower garden, just about discernible in the prev video. Damaging yet more plants (cloches soaring off horizontally into the night) and blocking the already precarious stone stairways with tangles of poles to contort myself through whilst carrying the day's heavy dry-storage gear back down in the drizzle. #climateDiary
