@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @douglasvb@m.ai6yr.org The #oceans have been Earth’s heat sink, absorbing disproportionately more heat than land and atmosphere. I had a chance to ask Prof. Michael Mann about how long it would take for the land-air-sea heat equilibrium to be restored (if we went zero carbon tomorrow). His answer was 50 years. The oceans will continue to heat the atmosphere for at least 50 years after we hit zero carbon. That is the most optimistic estimate I’ve read. Other climatologists say up to 200 years. We will not live long enough to see the #climate stabilize.

An analysis of rare earth-rich mud retrieved from the deep seabed off a remote Pacific Island earlier this year found medium and heavy rare earth elements accounted for about 54% of the total rare earth content. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/business/2026/07/25/economy/japan-rare-earths-mud-minamitorishima/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #business #economy #minamitorishima #rareearths #minerals #mining #economicsecurity #china #oceans

"The Greenland shark is the planet's oldest vertebrate, reckoned to be somewhere between 272 and 512 years old. They are slow, as befits a fish so venerable. They live deep-down and secret lives. I am glad not to be a Greenland shark; I don't have enough thoughts to fill five hundred years. But I find the very idea of them hopeful. They will see us pass through whichever spinning chaos we may currently be living through, and the crash that will come after it, and they will live through the currently unimaginable things that will come after that: the transformations, revelations, the possible liberations. That is their beauty, and it's breathtaking; they go on. These slow, half-blind creatures are perhaps the closest thing to eternal this planet has to offer." from 'The Golden Mole and Other Hidden Treasures', by Katherine Rundell #Nature #Bookstodon #Oceans #Poetry

I don't know about you but I'm tired of reading stories about things I personally can do nothing about. But it's necessary to be informed, to know what's coming, to brace. "I think we should prepare for some pretty significant impacts. El Niño is no joke, both for agriculture, for the natural world, for ocean ecosystems." —Zeke Hausfather, a climate scientist with Berkeley Earth, a non-profit climate analysis organization, from the article https://www.cbc.ca/news/science/el-nino-july-9.7272908 #climate #weather #oceans

GOOD NEWS: Blue and fin whale sightings off Southern Africa have increased in recent years, hinting that these giants may be slowly recovering after being virtually wiped out by 20th‑century whaling. Nature heals when we give it the chance ❤️‍🩹 #protecttheoceans #whales #oceans

The twilight zone: Every night trillions of tiny creatures rise from the ocean depths. During World War Two sonar technicians made an extraordinary discovery. The pings from their echo sounders reflected off what they thought must be the ocean floor. But the sea was much shallower than they had expected and – even more puzzlingly – the seabed seemed to move up and down throughout the day. https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20260706-the-deep-sea-creatures-that-rise-every-night #globalmuseum #OceanLife #oceans #marineanimals

When the previous ocean record for June was set in 2023, scientists described the trends as “worrying”, “terrifying” and “bonkers”. This year, temperatures are even higher. #oceans #climatechange #climatecrisis #heat #makepolluterspay #protectheoceans

"I have perceived non existence The silence of eternal dark, and the infinity. I went beyond the time, time poured into me and we became immovable. I lost my body in the waves Perceiving vacuum and quiet, Becoming like its blue abyss And touching the oceanic secret I am going inwards recollecting What I am I am made of light I peer intensely The depths reveal a breath I merge with it And into the world emerge" 'The Depths', Natalia Molchanova #Poetry #Bookstodon #Oceans

In case you haven’t noticed, ocean surface temperatures have already smashed their previous records. With the seas this hot and El Niño on the way, it’s hard to pretend we won’t see more temperature records fall soon. #climatechange #oceans #extremetemps
