Good luck. #Klimakatastrophe

Responsible politicians need to act now, despite uncertainties, as they do for other security risks. For we won’t have scientific certainty until it’s too late. #AMOC https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c992e8g10nmo?app-referrer=search

Collapse of #Atlantic Currents May Already Be ‘Locked In’ A vast system of Atlantic currents delivers warmth to northern #Europe is at risk of collapse, according to a growing body of research. Latest study to warn of its demise finds there is at least 10% chance that collapse of Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation, or #AMOC, may already be “locked in.” If AMOC were to collapse, its flow slowing to a near halt, temps in northern Europe would drop by 9-27F (5-15C). https://e360.yale.edu/digest/amoc-collapse-10-percent

This new study estimates the risk of triggering an #AMOC shutdown as >10% if the world ramps down emissions to net zero by 2060, and 80% for a high emissions path. 🌊 It’s based on ensembles with one model, but plausible based on overall knowledge on how fragile AMOC is. https://e360.yale.edu/digest/amoc-collapse-10-percent

What happens to Europe if the AMOC collapses? The potential for much colder winters, loss of a significant part of maize and wheat agriculture, UK farmland reverting to grassland. The IPCC's confidence that this won't happen this century has decreased. In my next post I dig into the mechanism, why everybody is suddenly talking about it, how AMOC interacts with other tipping points, and how it might impact the food systems. You can find it here: https://existentialcrunch.substack.com/p/amoc-collapse #ClimateChange #AMOC #collapse

Much of Europe is sweating in an exceptional heat wave. But why has heat in Europe increased 4 times more than in other mid-latitude areas? That has been linked to the Atlantic #coldblob in several studies. #AMOC Slide from a talk I'm about the present at London Climate Action Week #LCAW2026.

Climate models have long warned that global warming could weaken deep-water formation—the density-driven sinkid that is the engine of the #AMOC. The logic is straightforward: As #Greenland’s ice sheets melt and sea ice formation declines, North #Atlantic waters will freshen. Combined with warmer sea temperatures, the freshening makes surface waters more buoyant. The AMOC was thought to have shut down abruptly during past #climate warmings, and a handful of researchers now argue such a tipping point could occur this century. A sputtering AMOC could trigger a sharp cooldown in northwestern #Europe, rising seas along the U.S. east coast, and shifts in tropical rainfall. https://www.science.org/content/article/ocean-current-warms-europe-may-be-more-resilient-feared#

For thirty years of my career studying this, I considered the #AMOC tipping risk a high impact but low probability risk for the future of humanity. Recently I've changed my mind. Here I explain why. ⬇️ https://youtu.be/Cg0N9MWw9Vk?si=sNcrTlo9aDiVBesx

The Trump administration is tearing up 900 deep-sea instruments that took a decade to install and $370 million to build — scrapping the world's most advanced ocean monitoring network to save $48m/year. Real-time data on AMOC stability, marine heat waves, ocean chemistry, commercial fisheries? Gone. Congress twice voted to save it. They did it anyway by bureaucratic fiat through the NSF. No, not budget management, this is deliberate science vandalism — blinding ourselves to the ocean systems that regulate global climate, because the results were inconvenient. #climatecrisis #trumpadministration #sciencedenialism #oceanscience #amoc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJczkQZDQhM

AMOC? More certain than previously thought https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/sciadv.adx4298 And Guardian article https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/apr/15/critical-atlantic-current-significantly-more-likely-to-collapse-than-thought Okay. Or not. But what does it mean, regionally, on the way to the OFF state? Do we, us alive today experience any changes in our lifetime? I would say yes. Disclaimer: it's conjecture. and I am no expert in anything. So. From tipping to OFF, it takes 100 to 150 years. What happens during this slowdown phase? I read in another paper that because AMOC slowdown intensifies the #ColdBlob, it also changes how the Lows and Highs over the Atlantic are distributed, which changes the jetstream, which in turn causes more extreme heat events in Europe. More #ExtremeHeat events? How do those affect our biosphere in Europe? Well, I don't know exactly. But IPCC AR6 WG2 has mapped the impact on European plants, insects and mammals if we let global 3.2C become reality. As you can see, 3.2C spells extinction level for European insects – due to heat events and related processes that come with 3.2C. And I believe, a slow-ING #AMOC mimics heat events of such high-emission scenarios. So we, us alive today, will watch our European insects AND soil…! die right in front of our eyes. I think.
