Alaskans will be flying blind after #NSF decommissions #ocean monitoring network #Alaska’s multibillion-dollar #fishing industry and vulnerable coastal communities at risk. The real-time information from these ocean observatories helps scientists, fishery managers, coastal hazard planners, and even the military plan and prepare for the future. Whether that’s calculating how much fish can be harvested or when a marine heatwave or giant wave action may be occurring. https://arstechnica.com/science/2026/06/alaskans-will-be-flying-blind-after-nsf-decommissions-ocean-monitoring-network/

Sixty-two million years ago, four million years after the sky fell, a stretch of Egyptian seafloor filled with fish — and held them, perfectly, in stone. Five hundred specimens. More than twenty kinds. A petrified aquarium pulled from blistering sand at a site called Qreiya 3. The asteroid gutted the ocean's food webs, and into that emptied water the percomorphs exploded into needle-toothed predators and the ancestors of tuna and seahorses. https://twp.ai/4hs7AI #Fossils #Paleontology #Science #Egypt #Ocean #Nature #Extinction #DeepTime #NatGeo #EarthHistory #ThistleAndMoss #TheGathering

Science / the fossils 62 million years ago, 4 million years after the asteroid, a stretch of Egyptian seafloor filled with fish — and held them in stone. 500 specimens. Paleontologist Sanaa El-Sayed pulled them from blistering desert, closing a ten-million-year hole in how life rebuilds after catastrophe. https://twp.ai/4hs7C2 #Science #Paleontology #Fossils #Egypt #Extinction #Ocean #Climate #NatGeo #ThistleAndMoss #TheGathering

🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨 #Trump Administration to Dismantle #OceanMonitoring System The $368 million network of instruments collecting data in both the #Atlantic & #Pacific has been #critical to #climate & #ocean #research. There’s no reason to do this other than to be destructive & evil. #ClimateChange #MarineLife #MarineEcosystems #NSF #ClimateCrisis https://www.nytimes.com/2026/06/01/climate/ocean-observatories-initiative.html?smid=nytcore-ios-share

Our favorite headline today: "Shark lasers could help save vulnerable species." From @popsci@universeodon.com: "By merging optical technology and geochemistry, a group of researchers are gaining far more accurate information on the snub-nosed speartooth shark’s age, as well as the health of its environment." https://flip.it/eZ06D_ #Sharks #Animals #Science #Ocean #Conservation

I returned last night from a wonderful trip to the British Virgin Islands. Spent a week on a sailboat, sailing to four islands, and snorkeling and scuba diving off of two of them. The weather cooperated nicely and I thoroughly enjoyed the warm clear water!! More pics to come! #sailing #ocean #scuba #beach #nature #photography #SeaScape #NaturePhotography

Two of the islands that I sailed to had small rock islands near them. Once the sailboat was tied up at each main island, I then took the dinghy to the nearby rock island to scuba dive. Here are pics from below the surface as I dived around one of those rock islands. It’s a different world underwater! #ocean #scuba #nature #SeaScape #photography #NaturePhotography

Here are some of my views when I went scuba diving around the other rock island on my trip last week. This area had a different underwater landscape than the one shown in my earlier post; the seafloor was much more gently sloping. Saw some interesting coral and other forms of life on the bottom here that were quite different from the other rock island. #ocean #scuba #photography #nature #seascape #NaturePhotography

Something’s fishy here! On one of my dives off of the sailboat, I discovered a barracuda and remora (suckerfish) lurking under the boat, each 3-4 feet (1 m) in length. They remained there in spite of my presence and occasionally cruised close to me. For a while, the remora attached itself to the keel of one of the hulls of the boat (upper right pic)! I had more fun near the surface watching these fish than being at the bottom that day! #ocean #scuba #nature #photography #NaturePhotography

No waterfall today on WaterfallWednesday, but how about a wave crashing over a large rock formation as viewed from underwater? Saw a number of such events while snorkeling around a rocky point last week. Waves were crashing regularly over the rocks--- had to be careful and not get sucked into the swirling chaos of each crash! #ocean #snorkeling #waves #nature #photography #NaturePhotography #Seascape
