There’s a river of molten rock flowing 1,400 miles below the Pacific Ocean in the Earth’s outer core, which is an important part of the planet’s magnetic field. Should we be concerned the river just changed directions? Read more from @sciencefocus@flipboard.com: https://flip.it/VqIZZd #Science #Earth #Geology

There is an alternative to climate breakdown, political extremism, and economic tensions. A set of bold policy proposals, including hefty wealth taxes on billionaires, sharp reductions in working hours, a change in diets and a shift of investment from materially intense sectors, such as industry and mining, to education and health. If these and other measures are taken the incomes of 89% of the world’s population would double by 2100 and global heating would be kept below 2C (3.6F) over the preindustrial average. This vision provides a positive alternative to the grim projections from far-right techno extractivists, nationalists and billionaires who claim the future will inevitably bring more fossil fuels, climate disruption and inequality. https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2026/jun/04/world-inequality-lab-equality-academics-planetary-survival #Earth #ClimateDiary #GreenEnergy #FossilFuels #Climate #ClimateChange #GlobalWarming #ClimateCrisis #Nature #Science #TaxBillionaires #NoPlanetB #Economics #Politics #Health #Equality

The world is heading toward the greatest economic crisis of all time. On the one hand, because of Trump’s idiotic war that is blocking the Strait of Hormuz; on the other, because the economy is evaluated solely on the basis of growth. Endless economic growth is the philosophy of a cancer cell. The common good, environmental destruction, and population decline are not factored in at all. This can only lead to a crisis that keeps getting worse. meme #economy #down #downhill #capitalism #war #hormuz #inflation #groth #philosophy #politics #trade #world #worldorder #future #society #trump #finance #poverty #rich #equality #environment #emissions #pollution #earth #civilization #crisis #collapse #apocalypse #doomsday

Oceans of plastic, a global study: 93% of waste on beaches comes from… AGI - The main cause of plastic pollution globally is represented by waste from food and beverages. This is highlighted by a study, published in the One Earth journal, conducted by scientists from the University of Plymouth, the Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Brunel University London, and the Plymouth Marine Laboratory. The team, led by Richard Thompson, Max Kelly, and Susan Jobling, collected and evaluated over 5,000 waste measurements on beaches to identify the predominant elements in marine litter across all seven continents. The authors considered nine ocean systems, 13 regional seas, and 112 nations, a total area representing 86 percent of the world’s population. The analysis revealed that plastics related to the food sector are the predominant elements in 93 percent of the countries considered. Among the most frequent items, scientists report, for example, packaging, caps, lids, and plastic bottles. The scientists’ warning: 20 million tons per year in the environment Current estimates, according to experts, suggest that 20 million tons of plastic waste enter the environment each year, and it is clear that waste management alone is not sufficient to address the challenge of plastic pollution. Urgent measures are therefore needed to reduce the amount of plastic that reaches the environment, for example, by limiting production to only objects that bring a essential benefit to society. “Plastic pollution – says Thompson – represents a global environmental problem with serious negative repercussions on the environment, the economy, and human health. Our work highlights the most abundant waste categories at the national, regional, and global level. Such information is fundamental to establishing the priority of interventions to be proposed and on the specific topologies of objects on which to focus.” “This work – concludes Kelly – provides irrefutable proof that single-use food and beverage packaging is the main culprit of plastic pollution in our oceans globally, and that actions aimed at reducing the consumption of these articles will represent a fundamental step in addressing this global environmental challenge.” #Earth #RichardThompson #MaxKelly #SusanJobling #86percent #93percent #20milliontons #Thompson #Kelly https://www.agi.it/scienza/news/2026-05-22/plastica-oceani-rifiuti-cibo-37184697/

It’s a big problem. According to the latest data from Copernicus, water temperatures in April were the highest ever recorded by humans, after those of the same month in 2024. And with the El Niño phenomenon arriving in the coming months, it all suggests that they will rise further: “A warm ocean means that global warming is deeply rooted in the Earth’s system. We’ve been saying that for years. If we want to reach a point of no return, we are on the right track,” says Sandro Carniel of the CNR. #Copernicus #ElNiño #Earth #SandroCarniel https://www.editorialedomani.it/ambiente/crisi-climatica-aprile-mari-temperature-record-copernicus-perche-problema-jg3f7rdn

An active rift in the African continent has reached a “critical threshold” and will break apart soon. "We found that rifting in this zone is more advanced, and the crust is thinner, than anyone had recognized," says Christian Rowan, a geoscientist at Columbia University. Here is what April knows that we keep forgetting: the dogwood blooms by wounding. Each bract — what we call the petal — is a leaf that scarred itself open, a piece of tissue that tore at its margin and healed into something people drive across counties to witness. Guarded and radiant. Not one then the other. Both, in the same white face of the same flower, at the same time. https://thistleandmoss.com/p/3-4-2026-mourning-a-loss #meditation #spirituality #druid #earth #nature #eco #gaia #brigid #pagan #trans #queer #lgbtq

Mother of the earth, I am here. I come carrying two things today and they don't sit well together: the impulse to guard — to wall, to close, to cover the throat — and the radiance that keeps pushing up through the cracks like those damn redbud shoots that split asphalt. I lay them both here. https://thistleandmoss.com/p/3-4-2026-mourning-a-loss #meditation #spirituality #druid #earth #nature #eco #gaia #brigid #pagan #trans #queer #lgbtq
