Selling joy at Toys R Us at 15: the summer job that became an unexpected feminist awakening https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2026/aug/11/job-that-changed-me-toy-r-us-store I loved the business of selling toys – it felt like I was selling joy. But my least favourite part was the gendered language I was 15 when I landed my job at Toys R Us. Before that, my first job was… #lifestyle #work #feminism

My attempts at having someone define my work have failed. So now I'm scheduling a meeting and forcing folks to review a list of tasks which I understand to be my work. 🙃 This won't reduce the chance that two weeks from now someone will tell me that I'm working on the wrong thing. But it will ensure that I can remind them that they didn't disagree when we reviewed my tasks two weeks ago. #work

He's not unique in this regard, either. It's time to stop getting fooled every time a Democrat says there's a genocide in #Gaza. They're not going to stop it. Even if they wanted to, the #party machinery that gets elected fundamentally prevents it. The only #electoral means of stopping #imperial genocides is a dedicated #AntiImperialist party. But whether we put in the decades of hard #work to #build one or not, we need to focus on #DirectAction to #sabotage the genocidal #systems.

I left work early today and scared the hell out of my family. Apparently I'm something of a workaholic to them. I came in the door and Melissa literally puts a client on hold to run out and make sure nothing bad happened at work. She assumes I'm going to punch the owner's son one day. Then she goes to tell Ellie I'm home and her response is "What's wrong?". I need to spend more time with my family and less at work apparently... #today #work

We (IT department): Please, when creating a ticket describe the issue as precisely as possible, so that we can spend less time asking you "what do you mean by that", and more time actually resolving the issue. Clear, descriptive ticket titles would also be appreciated. Meanwhile developers are submitting tickets like this: ...what the fuck am I supposed to do, mate? #work #ticket #jira #issue #colleagues #annoyances #respect #job

Living wage for Hawaii: $31/hr. Minimum wage: $16/hr. A friend's daughter manages a GameStop fulltime for $24,000 per year salary. That calculates (using my suspect math) to $12/hr. And people wonder why their kids are still living at home. Stupid economy! #hawaii #retail #work

Editors starting to notice the Star Trek references in every single piece submitted by autistic writer

The editors of the successful satirical website The Daily Tism have started to catch on to the Star Trek references scattered like crew members in a transporter throughout one of their writer’s submissions.  Sara Gibbs, 38, and Sarah Amero, 28, are reportedly “not that into...

Project leading is one of wildly different things about other countries. In Finland I've learnt to have pretty extreme freedom at least in the IT. I tell how long what I'm going to do takes and inform the higher ups when I'm done and if there's something noteworthy about it. Other than that I'm free to work as I want. For about a month I've been working with a foreign customer and it's been a culture shock. Basically I get 2-3 phone calls a day, where I'm asked what I'm doing, what I did before and I'm expected to report current progress. It's really weird to me having to tell that I'm working on a long project where single parts of it take days, so if I'm called 3 hours later, I'm still doing the same thing. The problem resolving is also different. As a highly independent worker, I try to figure out a a solution to problems I encounter before asking for help. I prefer solutions that are better in the long run. But this multiple contacts a day management also comes with a strong preference to deal with every problem with the quickest possible solution, often ending with "pee in your pants during winter" solutions. A weird world to work in. #work #worklife

Why 'narcissist' bosses are more likely to oppose work from home Research published last month found narcissistic leaders — those with a tendency to be self-centred and entitled — were more likely than others to resist remote work. Why? The study concluded "it interferes with their motivations for power and status". https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-07-21/narcissist-bosses-oppose-work-from-home/106937492 #Work #Psychology #Careers #BusinessEconomicsandFinance
