I take serious issue with the @guardian@flipboard.social's reporting on data showing increased cancer rates among young people "prompting warnings about lifestyle choices". It is completely inappropriate to suggest that cancer patients and survivors might have avoided their cancer had they made better life choices.
The article says very little about the causes of cancer, only stating: "WCRF said risk factors such as growing obesity levels, poor diet, insufficient exercise, alcohol consumption, smoking and environmental exposures (such as pollutants, chemicals, plastics, water and air pollution) could be contributing to the trend" and adding "About 40% of cancers are linked to these kinds of modifiable risks."
But that list mixes a lot of things: exposure to polluants, chemicals, plastics and pollution are not *personally modifiable risks*! These are society-level risks that require collective, i.e. political, action. So now is the time to report on irresponsible policies such as Germany's fuel subsidies or the EU's Food and Feed Safety Omnibus that aims to roll back safeguards protecting us and the environment from pesticides and are *currently* being implemented/negotiated NOT blame young people for not eating their fives-a-day. Seriously, what are we supposed to do: Cycle to work in more toxic fumes? Ingest more harmful pesticides by eating more fruit and veg?

As temperatures get hotter, #pesticides are more dangerous to #farmworkers
Heat stresses the body, making it more vulnerable to pesticides and other toxicants, and protective clothing worn in heat only adds to this stress. Hotter temperatures can also lead to higher evaporation rates, increasing farmworkers’ exposure as more pesticides are applied to crops. And heat can boost rates of chemical transformation of pesticides into more toxic compounds

@thejessiekirk@ohai.social I delivered new school buses in the 90s and had to stop every hour or two to clean the windshield. But I drove last year from Edmonton to Winnipeg (1300 kms) in late May (prime bug splatter time) and didn't clean the windshield a single time. #Pesticides are killing the land.

If you spray your yard with garlic to repel mosquitoes you might be inadvertently inhibiting the reproduction of other insects. I.e., garlic-based whole-yard sprays are not as "eco-friendly" as pesticide companies claim. That's my take-away from this lab study showing effects on mosquitoes, fruit flies, and wasps. #mosquitoes #garlic #insects #pesticides https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0092867426003387
"Nutrients in our food are declining. Can regenerative agriculture save it?
Approach focuses on rebuilding soil health, increasing biodiversity and restoring natural ecosystems
For the last few decades, the nutrient content of our crops has been declining. In the late 90s, the US Department of Agriculture found the vitamin C content of lemons had decreased by almost a third over the previous 22 years. Calcium in carrots, an important source especially for non-meat eaters, had reduced, on average, by more than a quarter. Vitamin A in bananas was down by 57%. The mineral content of wheat has declined by between 20-30% since the 1960s.
,..,,.,.,.
The way soil is treated by modern farming may be part of the problem. Ploughing and heavy use of chemicals – fertilisers, herbicides and pesticides – disturb and even destroy the soil’s mycorrhizal networks, which we are only just coming to understand but allow plants to pull in nutrients from the earth."
