One would think that given the UK's high levels of recidivism, reducing the prison population would focus on repeat offenders, specifically: youth work to try & reduce the number of young people embarking on a 'life of crime' (from which few escape); rehabilitation & education in prison to help the convicted change their post-release opportunities. But, the political 'logic' remains build more prisons, underfund youth work & cut prison education staff. #crime #prisons #politics

"Global Protests for Dr. Abu Safiya Meanwhile, demonstrations demanding the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Kamal Adwan Hospital, took place on Saturday in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, and Italy. Protesters carried Palestinian flags and called for the immediate release of Abu Safiya and all Palestinian detainees held in Israeli prisons. In Belfast, activists gathered in the city center in response to international solidarity appeals. In Milan, demonstrators highlighted reports that Abu Safiya remains in solitary confinement, has been denied adequate medical treatment, and has been subjected to torture while in Israeli custody. In London, healthcare workers and activists continued a series of public actions, including banner drops and demonstrations, to draw attention to the detention of Palestinian medical personnel." #doctor #HussamAbuSafiya #palestine #gaza #protests #demonstrations #israel #prisons #torture https://www.palestinechronicle.com/16-gaza-detainees-freed-amid-mounting-international-pressure-over-dr-abu-safiya/

Under cross-examination by Chavez, Main said she was unaware that Wesley was missing fingers on his left hand and added that he had never complained that the sink wasn’t working for him. She said she later visited Wesley’s cell, got into a wheelchair and wheeled it in to see if the sink would be accessible from a wheelchair. #orpol #usPol #prisons #ojrc #police

"Hossam Abu Safiya; when a hostage sounds the alarm on behalf of thousands of detainees At certain moments, a person transcends the self, and their voice becomes the voice of an entire community. This is precisely what is happening today with Dr Hossam Abu Safiya. The man who dedicated his life to saving the sick now stands, while in the grip of his captors, as a living witness to the ordeal endured by thousands of Palestinian hostages within Israeli detention centers. His recent cry for help, conveyed by his lawyer following a visit, is not merely a personal plea; it is an alarm bell ringing on behalf of all those hidden behind walls, and for all those whose humanity is being stripped away day by day, far from the world’s gaze. As the coordinator of the Red Ribbons Campaign, I believe Dr Hossam Abu Safiya’s case imposes a twofold responsibility upon us. It is not simply the case of a renowned physician; it encapsulates the reality faced by broad segments of the Palestinian population who have become hostages in every sense of the word." https://www.middleeastmonitor.com/20260709-hossam-abu-safiya-when-a-hostage-sounds-the-alarm-on-behalf-of-thousands-of-detainees/ 🪡 #palestine #HossamAbuSafiya #hostages #israel #abuse #torture #prisons #apartheid

"Calls Grow for Israel to Release Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya; U.S. Doctor Says “Nobody Is Safe” in Gaza (video) Israel continues to ignore international calls to free the director of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, from over 18 months of Israeli detention without charge. After seeing Dr. Abu Safiya on July 2, his attorney Nasser Odeh says the doctor faces “tangible danger to his life” from torture and medical neglect. For more, we speak to Tirza Leibowitz, the deputy director of Physicians for Human Rights Israel, about Abu Safiya’s case and efforts to secure his release. The group has filed an appeal in the Israeli courts requesting the release of Abu Safiya and 13 other Palestinian doctors who were captured in Gaza and imprisoned by the Israeli military." 1/2 #doctor #HussamAbuSafiya #palestine #gaza #israel #torture #prisoners #prisons https://www.democracynow.org/2026/7/7/dr_hussam_abu_safiya_update

Sweet deal for prison for profit corporation. Private prison company, CoreCivic, sells two immigant detention centers to federal government for about $1.5 BILLION. The company will continue to operate the facilities under federal DHS contracts. The company is a major trump donor. #graft #prisons #playforpay https://apnews.com/article/corecivic-california-sold-immigration-detention-facilities-dhs-78fe5f3d486ee2c803c44f2302b936b3

"The Palestinian journalists held in Israel’s ‘cemeteries for the living’ Held without charge in Israeli jails, West Bank reporters describe beatings, starvation, isolation, and threats meant to force them into silence. Ali Al-Samoudi has spent four decades documenting the daily realities of life under occupation in the northern West Bank. A 60-year-old veteran Palestinian journalist from Jenin, he has worked as a correspondent for Al-Quds newspaper and as a cameraman for Al Jazeera and other international media outlets. But he is perhaps best known as the colleague of Shireen Abu Akleh, whom Israeli forces shot and killed during a raid on Jenin refugee camp in May 2022. Standing beside Abu Akleh, Al-Samoudi was also shot that day in the back; the bullet exited cleanly through his shoulder. On April 29, 2025, Israeli forces raided Al-Samoudi’s home in Jenin at dawn and arrested him. He was held without charge or trial, before being released almost a year to-the-day later, on April 30, 2026." .,,.,.,., https://www.972mag.com/palestinian-journalists-cemeteries-for-the-living/ #journalists #journalism #press #palestine #israel #prisons #prisoners #apartheid #hostages
