In February 1890, Van Gogh was staying at the Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum, where he had no opportunity to paint from life… When examining Van Gogh's painting, one can notice a pair of butterflies fluttering against the prison wall. For the artist, they may have symbolized hope for liberation… When painting this work, Van Gogh primarily used blue paint. The artist was known for his fondness for cool blue, which he combined with warm yellow to convey his inner state. The clash of these two colors also symbolizes the inner conflict that marked Van Gogh’s life—between hope and despair, joy and sorrow. The artist often used blue for his self-portraits. Through blue and its many shades, he sought to understand himself as a person and as an individual.”

Today in Labor History July 25, 2010: WikiLeaks published classified documents about the War in Afghanistan, one of the largest leaks in U.S. military history. The leak included 91,000 Afghan War documents, covering the period from January 2004 to December 2009. Prior to the release, WikiLeaks made the logs available to “The Guardian,” “The New York Times” and “Der Spiegel.” The Times said the leak "offers an unvarnished and grim picture of the Afghan war." The Guardian called it "one of the biggest leaks in U.S. military history ... a devastating portrait of the failing war in Afghanistan, revealing how coalition forces have killed hundreds of civilians in unreported incidents, Taliban attacks have soared and NATO commanders fear neighboring Pakistan and Iran are fueling the insurgency." The documents also revealed that U.S. military contractors had hired local male child prostitutes. As a result of the leaks, the U.S. government launched a criminal investigation into Wikileaks, and its founder, Julian Assange, who spent years under British custody. And the U.S. fought aggressively to get him extradited to the U.S., where he would have faced multiple life sentences for espionage. Today in Labor History July 23, 1892: Anarchist Alexander Berkman tried to assassinate industrialist Henry Clay Frick in retaliation for the 9 miners killed by Pinkerton thugs on July 6, during the Homestead Steel Strike. Frick was the manager of Homestead Steel and had hired the Pinkertons to protect the factory and the scab workers he hired to replace those who were on strike. Berkman, and his lover, Emma Goldman, planned the assassination hoping it would arouse the working class to rise up and overthrow capitalism. Berkman failed in the assassination attempt and went to prison for 14 years. He wrote a book about his experience called, “Prison Memoirs of an Anarchist” (1912). He also wrote “The Bolshevik Myth” (1925) and “The ABC of Communist Anarchism” (1929). Today in Labor History July 14, 1789: Parisians stormed the Bastille during the French Revolution. The Bastille was a fortress, armory and political prison, and was a symbol of tyranny, feudal authority and the "divine" rights of kings. The Marquis de Sade had been imprisoned there and was transferred out only 10 days before the storming. The French Revolution succeeded in overthrowing the monarchy, replacing it with a bourgeois republic. It seems relatively light minimum tariff is due to the defendant handing himself in the next day, an early guilty plea (but to manslaughter rather than murder, presumably in the hope of further reducing the #prison time) and the person killed not being the actual target Lad apparently had 0 #criminal record before doing this - British society *really* needs to do something about #ToxicMasculinity - it is regularly claiming lives and overwhelming the crminal justice system in what is an otherwise relatively safe and prosperous country.. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c20y3vd50w1o
