In 1993 Brenda and Wanda Henson bought land outside Ovett, Mississippi, and opened a feminist, lesbian-run retreat and food bank in a county that made its feelings clear immediately. Somebody left a dead dog on their mailbox. They didn't leave. They ran the pantry. They kept the gate open, and over years the temperature around them changed — which is the least dramatic and most difficult kind of victory there is. Nobody photographs the long middle. That's the part where the root goes down. This runs on readers, not an ad network — no oligarch upstairs getting nervous about a sentence. Selling joy at Toys R Us at 15: the summer job that became an unexpected feminist awakening https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2026/aug/11/job-that-changed-me-toy-r-us-store I loved the business of selling toys – it felt like I was selling joy. But my least favourite part was the gendered language I was 15 when I landed my job at Toys R Us. Before that, my first job was… #lifestyle #work #feminism

James Simpson invented the use of chloroform for pain relief in childbirth in 1847. The religious authorities of the UK were outraged, as the bible clearly says god cursed women to painful childbirth. Pain relief was heresy! Simpson received death threats and chloroform was considered socially unacceptable for years, until queen Victoria availed herself of the technique. The religious argument was never resolved. Society simply decided it couldn't deal with the contradiction of the the church's holy book saying pain was a religious duty, and the head of the church choosing pain relief. So it became a non-issue. I don't think people confronted their moral objections and decided that biblical literalism was harmful. Instead, part of their religious framework became too problematic, so it was simply reclassified as "wasn't important / don't think about it". Thereby enabling the rest of the biblical literalism to retain its ideological dominance. This is neurotypical ethics. 1/2 #womensRights #feminism #religion #lgbtqia #actuallyAutistic

My favourite paintings, No.3 Artemisia Gentileschi. Judith Beheading Holofenes (1620) Artemisia Gentileschi painted two similar versions of this subject (this one's in the Uffizi). I used to use this in lectures, contrasting it with Carravagio's more static composition, to argue a women painting this subject came to it with a different view of female agency (feminist standpoint). Its shockingly visceral painting, but actually that's what the subject demands! #art #TodaysPainting #feminism

Married mothers do more housework than single mothers. Not a bug — a documented pattern. Why? Because a lot of husbands aren't helping. They're adding work. by @daylightatheism@universeodon.com https://onlys.ky/the-end-of-marriage/?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=evergreen #Feminism #Marriage #GenderEquality #LaborEconomics #Relationships

wot Len said!!! https://www.smh.com.au/national/nsw/abbott-misses-the-difference-between-morals-and-ethics-20260803-p60kuy.html?ref=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_source=rss_feed Liberal Party president Tony Abbott describes the Reformers as “a group of enthusiastic young Christians with a strong sense of mission” (“Abbott says ICAC a factional hit job as Taylor faces questions”, August 3). It all sounds so harmless, but what is that mission, exactly? Christians in this country are afforded every freedom to conduct their own lives within the guidelines of their religion. If they oppose same-sex marriage, no one will force them to have one. If they oppose voluntary assisted dying, they will be permitted to die in protracted agony. But that’s not enough for these people. They’re determined that we should all observe their beliefs, whether we share them or not. They’ve clearly, and wisely, given up on encouraging Australians into their churches to hear and live the Christian message voluntarily. Their strategy now is to gain control of a major political party and impose their dogma by force of law. There’s something deeply disturbing about a group of callow, overindulged men who consider themselves qualified to tell me what I may or may not do. I’m pleased that, in this instance, the mission failed. But I’m also wary that they, or others like them, haven’t given up trying. My favourite paintings, No.1 Suzanne Valadon. The Blue Room (1923) Suzanne Valadon fought to become an artist, having honed her skills as a painter watching the Parisian artists she modelled for. This signature painting is a fabulous critique of the genre of the reeling nude favoured by male artists across the centuries. The model is dressed causally, smokes & refuses to engage with the viewer. While not strictly s self portrait the sentiment is all Valdon's! #art #feminism #TodaysPainting

Regulation of #ebikes is a #racism issue, a #classism issue, a #feminism issue, an #ageism issue, and an #ableism issue. Policing of all kinds, including motor vehicle operation, is always directed disproportionately at people of color, leading to higher rates of license revocation, suspension, citation of infractions and fines against people of color. Power assistance is not just extremely helpful for disabled people, elderly people, and women, in particular… #BikeTooter #FediBike

As a feminist, who has been in many different kinds of relationships with cis, hetero men, after decades of analysing the patterns of them, I found a common theme and I know that I am not the only woman who came to that conclusion. In my experience this is true for all cis, hetero men, not matter if you are neurodivergent, progressive, even call yourself a feminist. You are all way too comfortable with women doing all the work for you, while not even being aware of it, while not even acknowledging it, at least not to the full extent. In my experience there are no exceptions to this. This is the reason why the song "Labour" by Paris Paloma resonates with so many women, this one of the many reasons why women simply give up on dating cis, hetero men. #feminism #intersectionality #neurodivergent
