LoL: "A US government map of Africa mislabeled every country during a state department presentation at a global conference in Brazil this week, causing a stir among attenders who took screenshots and posted them online. Reuters viewed a video of the presentation given at the Aids 2026 conference in Rio de Janeiro, which shows the errant map displayed halfway during a presentation about the state department’s new health agreements. A Reuters analysis found the image of the map included in the presentation contained an artificial intelligence watermark that signals it was made with OpenAI tools. The company said it was investigating the report. The state ‌department said it took “full responsibility” ‌for the confusion caused and that the map had been produced by a team member who hastily changed ‌the slide deck before the event." https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jul/30/government-map-mislabels-african-countries?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other #USA #Africa #Geography #Imperialism #Neocolonialism

During ww1, imperial Britain made three conflicting promises - giving Palestinian land to different groups:

  • to the Arabs for an Arab state in exchange for an Arab Revolt against the Ottomans;

  • to France - to partition the territory into British & French domains; and

  • to the Zionists for “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people”.

Today in Labor History July 25, 2010: WikiLeaks published classified documents about the War in Afghanistan, one of the largest leaks in U.S. military history. The leak included 91,000 Afghan War documents, covering the period from January 2004 to December 2009. Prior to the release, WikiLeaks made the logs available to “The Guardian,” “The New York Times” and “Der Spiegel.” The Times said the leak "offers an unvarnished and grim picture of the Afghan war." The Guardian called it "one of the biggest leaks in U.S. military history ... a devastating portrait of the failing war in Afghanistan, revealing how coalition forces have killed hundreds of civilians in unreported incidents, Taliban attacks have soared and NATO commanders fear neighboring Pakistan and Iran are fueling the insurgency." The documents also revealed that U.S. military contractors had hired local male child prostitutes. As a result of the leaks, the U.S. government launched a criminal investigation into Wikileaks, and its founder, Julian Assange, who spent years under British custody. And the U.S. fought aggressively to get him extradited to the U.S., where he would have faced multiple life sentences for espionage. The whole column is worth reading, but just to expand a little on this comment about why the racist right is in such a frenzy about the #TheOdyssey cast: "[Black people don't belong, because] The Odyssey is a pillar of “Western civilization,” which they consider to be white. SO MUCH work went into constructing this view of a "Western Civilization" stretching from the ancient Mediterranean (or even Mesopotamia) to the northern European/American present, much of it carried out in the nineteenth century as part of an explicit program of racial and imperial justification. And the contortions to make it "white" are equally illuminating. #Renaissance authors who looked to the ancient past were much more acutely attuned to the distinctions between southern Europe with its connections to the Mediterranean, and the northern areas outside of Rome. 🎁 link: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/07/odyssey-race/688058/?gift=2KhEOewKu103aR6RIOWuaqHRMEZxJM4PdCaSqDwGdkg&utm_source=copy-link&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=share @histodons #WesternCivilization #imperialism

Question: The former director of the CIA, Robert Gates, stated in his memoirs that the American intelligence services began to aid the Mujahiddin in Afghanistan six months before the Soviet intervention. Is this period, you were the national securty advisor to President Carter. You therefore played a key role in this affair. Is this correct? Brzezinski: Yes. According to the official version of history, CIA aid to the Mujahiddin began during 1980, that is to say, after the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan on December 24, 1979. But the reality, closely guarded until now, is completely otherwise: Indeed, it was July 3, 1979 that President Carter signed the first directive for secret aid to the opponents of the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul. And that very day, I wrote a note to the president in which I explained to him that in my opinion this aid was going to induce a Soviet military intervention [emphasis added throughout]. Q: Despite this risk, you were an advocate of this covert action. But perhaps you yourself desired this Soviet entry into the war and looked for a way to provoke it? B: It wasn’t quite like that. We didn’t push the Russians to intervene, but we knowingly increased the probability that they would. Q : When the Soviets justified their intervention by asserting that they intended to fight against secret US involvement in Afghanistan , nobody believed them . However, there was an element of truth in this. You don’t regret any of this today? B: Regret what? That secret operation was an excellent idea. It had the effect of drawing the Russians into the Afghan trap and you want me to regret it? The day that the Soviets officially crossed the border, I wrote to President Carter, essentially: “We now have the opportunity of giving to the USSR its Vietnam war." Indeed, for almost 10 years, Moscow had to carry on a war that was unsustainable for the regime , a conflict that bought about the demoralization and finally the breakup of the Soviet empire. https://archive.fo/KUO0A Just a reminder

Today the U.S. funds and arms Israel’s genocide against Palestinians In the past, Israel funded and armed the Guatemalan genocide against Mayans Today in Labor History July 18, 1982: Over 250 Achi Maya (mostly women and children) were murdered by the Guatemalan armed forces and paramilitaries in the Plan de Sánchez massacre. They separated the girls, who were 15 to 20 years old, and raped them. Then they broke their arms and legs and killed them. Children were smashed against the floor and then thrown into the flames with their parents. Many of the weapons used by the Guatemalan military had been supplied by Israel, particularly after the U.S. Congress banned military aid to the country because of its atrocious human rights record. One relative of the victims said, "in church they tell us that divine justice is on the side of the poor; but the fact of the matter is, it is the military who get the Israeli guns." The massacre was part of the scorched earth policies of dictator Rios Mont. Despite his history of genocidal war crimes, Rios Mont was repeatedly elected to Congress in the 1990s and early 2000’s. In 2013, he was sentenced to 80 years in prison for genocide and crimes against humanity, but his sentence was overruled by the Constitutional Court and he never served time. #workingclass #LaborHistory #massacre #genocide #maya #guatemala #imperialism #rape #torture #israel #indigenous

"Concern about the influence of the United States is nothing new in Canadian politics. Left-wing activists have long criticized the country as little more than a vassal of the United States, especially since the original North American Free Trade Agreement. But defending Canada’s sovereignty in the 21st century will require much more than increased military spending and trade diversification. It requires the government to get serious about digital sovereignty. Until Canada gets off U.S. tech platforms and services, the government, major companies, and even much of the modern military hardware the government is procuring from the United States is in jeopardy. The U.S. government can request Canadian data stored in the servers of U.S. cloud companies, it has weaponized our use of those services to expand its surveillance apparatus, and it can even suspend access to any of those services at a moment’s notice. The libertarian framing of the internet as a place of freedom and expression was a potent mask for a project U.S. lawmakers always understood was imperial in nature: to defend its government’s power and geopolitical position. Now it has countries around the world exactly where it wants them. They have to choose: will they act quickly to take back that power, or accept the subservient position the United States has designed for them?" https://disconnect.blog/global-dependence-on-us-tech-was-always-the-plan/ #USA #SiliconValley #DigitalSovereignty #TechnologicalDependency #Trump #Imperialism

#Israel is backing four militias as part of a project to oust #Hamas and create a “new #Gaza,” according to a report released by Sky News on 25 October. "We are all for ‘The New Gaza.’ Soon we will achieve full control of the Gaza Strip and will gather under one umbrella,” he added. Astal added that the rifles used by his gang members are purchased from former Hamas fighters on the black market. “Ammunition and vehicles, on the other hand, are delivered through the Kerem Shalom border crossing after coordination with the Israeli military.” Sky News has revealed that these groups are receiving backing from Arab states as well. A photo featured in the report shows Abu Shabab’s deputy Ghassan al-Duhine, standing near a vehicle with a UAE-registered license plate. Additionally, the logos of two of the militias, one of them led by Astal, are nearly identical to those used by UAE-backed groups in #Yemen. The #UAE did not respond to a request for comment from the outlet. Regarding links to the PA, Astal said, “I have people within my group who are still, to this day, employees of the Palestinian Authority.” https://thecradle.co/articles/four-militias-backed-by-israel-arab-states-plan-project-new-gaza-to-dismantle-hamas-report #USpol #IsraelTerroristState #PalestinianAuthority #imperialism #gazagenocide @palestine@fedibird.com @israel@a.gup.pe

Today in Labor History July 9, 1947: The Greek government ordered the arrest of 11,500 people on charges of plotting a Communist revolution. It occurred during the Greek Civil War (1943-1949), between Royalists (supported by the UK and US) and various Communist factions (supported by Yugoslavia and the USSR). It was the first US proxy war against Russia during the Cold War. Well over 200,000 people died and over 1 million were displaced. #workingclass #LaborHistory #greece #communism #nationalism #russia #coldwar #imperialism #Revolution #proxywar #freespeech #civilwar
