There's a definite kind of pernicious move in cultural rewriting. It's one thing to serve the needs of the state producing an apologetic narrative of Hiroshima and Nagasaki disguised as biopic. It's a few steps further to rewrite universal myths going back 2500+ years, which seat at the foundation –or the carpet, if you will– of the entire western culture. #theodyssey

Saw The Odyssey last night at our island's last remaining theater, a 1930s art deco building now run by a local non-profit. Pretty much a full house for the last of five showings over a week. I enjoyed it although...during bright scenes I wanted to walk up to the screen and smooth the wrinkles. Also: "Dad!" seemed...a tad informal for the palace and it made me snort a piece of popcorn up my nose. #TheOdyssey #film #movies

We went and saw The Odyssey this morning in Lower Hutt. First time I've been to the cinema for ages so it felt almost like a new experience. (My, the buckets of popcorn are large these days!) You can only but admire the scale and execution of The Odyssey as a film. Some scenes are absolutely amazing in the way they are portrayed on the screen, especially the one with the Cyclops. But the film is rather charmless in many ways. I felt it was hard to become engrossed in it as I was conscious I was watching something to admire rather than something to love. I can see why many people want to read the original after seeing the film. Not only would certainly help to make sense of it, especially as in my case, you were unfamiliar with the overall arch of the story. But also because I suspect the reading the The Odyssey would be more immersive and ultimately more satisfying. I am glad I saw the film but it is not one I would want to see again. #TheOdyssey

6/6 #TheOdyssey In #IMAX Rant continues: So how does that make IMAX overrated? Well because most IMAX theaters are just ordinary theaters that has been converted to IMAX. A dual digital Xenon dlp projector system that gives a resolution of 2,9K. (There are many other "normal" cinemas that have 4k laser projectors.) Their special IMAX sound is mostly that they turn up the surrounds and the subwoofer. 2/? #TheOdyssey In #IMAX Rant continues: The THX cinema quality standard specifies that the ideal viewing angle from the best seat in the house should be about 40° and no less than 36° for the rear seats. This is considered the ideal size for a movie screen. It is the largest where you don't have to turn your head to see different parts of the image. IMAX screens (the good ones at least) have a viewing angle at around 60° for the best seats in the house. #Cinema #Film Continues:

Or sometimes the top of a hat. So when they show The Odyssey in IMAX 70/15 is more like a gimmick "Because we can" it is not "How the film was meant to be seen" #Cinema #Film Continues:

4/? #TheOdyssey In #IMAX Rant continues: Christopher Nolan knows that most most people will watch the movie in their local theater and he shot the movie accordingly. I saw a video in youtube where he talks at great length about how wonderful dolby vision is and how beautiful the 35 mm prints are. But why did he shoot the movie in IMAX 70/15 if he knew that very few people will see it like that? There are only 43 (i think) cinemas in the world. #Cinema #Film Continues:

5/6 #TheOdyssey In #IMAX Rant continues: Because he wants the higher quality that a larger negative provides. A higher quality negative will always give a better quality final product. Even in poor quality formats like streaming. If you watch for example Tenet on AppleTV you will notice that the picture looks better than most other films available on the platform. So it is a tool to make the best quality image possible, no matter how and where you watch the movie. #Cinema #Film

I finally went to see #TheOdyssey & was surprised how much I enjoyed it. I majored in Classics & my expectations were low given I still haven't forgiven Hollywood for Troy. Did it follow the poem perfectly? No. Did it capture every nuance & theme? Of course not. But what Nolan's film did magnificently manage to do is include so many events & ideas in Homer's epic in a single film, which is no small feat. The themes feel v timely in 2026 w/o being preachy. I highly recommend this one. #books

The thing I really hate about culture wars is when people start deciding whether they like things based on ideological positions rather than whether they like them. Is The Odyssey good because it annoys the Musk bros or is it bad because a woman who translated the poem said she didn't like it? #TheOdyssey
