The whole column is worth reading, but just to expand a little on this comment about why the racist right is in such a frenzy about the #TheOdyssey cast: "[Black people don't belong, because] The Odyssey is a pillar of “Western civilization,” which they consider to be white. SO MUCH work went into constructing this view of a "Western Civilization" stretching from the ancient Mediterranean (or even Mesopotamia) to the northern European/American present, much of it carried out in the nineteenth century as part of an explicit program of racial and imperial justification. The Odyssey was god awful, in my opinion. I should have listened to my gut and not followed the hype. Terrible acting. Terrible editing. Bad sound mixing. Terrible storyboard. Imagery was kind of great but short lived. Few parts were decent. I’m going to read the Emily Wilson translation just to check out the inspiration for the script though. #film #movies #theater #theodyssey

The Odyssey was god awful. I should have listened to my gut and not followed the hype. I’m glad they made sure to include the ol hunting dog to tug on heart strings - that felt super manipulative and quite the cheap plot device. Nolan’s next big challenge should be to make a film with predominantly female protagonists (and dead wives don’t count). I love his films but they are all sausage parties without exception!
