During ww1, imperial Britain made three conflicting promises - giving Palestinian land to different groups:

to the Arabs for an Arab state in exchange for an Arab Revolt against the Ottomans;
to France - to partition the territory into British & French domains; and
to the Zionists for “the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people”.
