DNA is often thought of as a mandatory programming code for cellular self-assembly, but this is outdated. Cells are simple, but they are not mere automatons exhibiting the same behavior. DNA is about possible physical configurations. Gene expression is the environment-driven selection of configurations, driven by "what it's like" for that cell. Dopo averla scartata per quasi 200 anni, i biologi stanno rivalutando la teoria dell'evoluzione di Lamarck, secondo la quale esiste anche una trasmissione ereditaria di tratti acquisiti durante la vita. Learned something new today. Went to check on the tadpoles and found these little critters. Had no idea what they were, but a little research and a friend at a quarry garden natural area confirmed they are Daphnia Pulex, or Water Fleas. Good indicator of healthy water quality, and a food source for little fish, etc.. More Round-leaved Sundews, Drosera rotundifolia. Studies have shown that extracts of this plant have strong anti-inflammatory properties.
