It's physics, stupid! Hover or focus to reveal Sensitive
@VeroniqueB99@mastodon.social When Donnie Dick, the whale, had stranded on Greenland's coast he felt offended. Despite his orange wig nobody welcomed Dick. Just physics squeezed the tiny handed. #limerick #physics

In classical mechanics, a particle is in mechanical equilibrium if the net force on that particle is zero.[1]: 39  By extension, a physical system made up of many parts is in mechanical equilibrium if the net force on each of its individual parts is zero.[1]: 45–46 [2] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mechanical_equilibrium #physics #caturday #caturdayeveryday

It seems to me that the if a ‘photon’ is ‘massless’ then most likely a ‘photon’ is actually a mathematical entity and not a physical one. It is an ‘infinitesimal’. And such things are not actual things, unless you are using Abraham Robinson’s nonstandard analysis. We do not use nonstandard analysis, but the standard kind that is a mathematical analog of action by direct contact. (They do not TELL you this in Calc 101, or ever. It is LOST KNOWLEDGE. Our modern times are a Dark Age)... #physics

A small group of collaborators are looking for geometries that exist outside the matrix of spacetime. The idea is that space and time may not be foundational. They might emerge from some deeper mathematical structure. Could the Buddhist law of "dependent origination" could be a geometry of this kind? https://zachperlman.substack.com/p/the-shape-of-dependent-origination #physics #buddhism #math #philosophy

You're either HYDROGEN or HELIUM. Carbon-based lifeforms don't exist, sweatie

#paperday on #astroph "The Impact of the Magnetised Cosmic Web on Ultra High Energy Cosmic Ray Propagation" by Allegra Firinu, myself and Carmelo Evoli. We investigated the role of realistic extragalactic magnetic fields in deflecting E>1e18eV cosmic rays, effectively creating "an horizon" beyond which particles cannot reach us, as they are trapped by magnetic fields. https://arxiv.org/abs/2605.02324 #cosmoMAG #astrophysics #astronomy #physics

I have a #physics question and I hope maybe some nerd will be interested in taking up the challenge of explaining something to an (I like to think) intelligent layperson. A lot of stuff I read about dark matter seems to assume, implicitly or even explicitly, that it comprises particles that not only don't interact with the ones we're pretty sure about, but also don't interact with each other. Is this just Occam's Razor? 'Cause, I mean, everything we DO know about is *complicated*! …
