Anthropic x Blender take Sensitive
The #anthropic #blender deal is the first time I have seen this type of "drama" on the fediverse Here's my "take" on it: As long as AI does not becomd a default part of blender, this just means more money for blender. Unless I am misreading the releases the Claude connector is basically just a plugin which blender already has a bunch of right? From blenders release: (https://www.blender.org/archive/anthropic-joins-the-blender-development-fund-as-corporate-patron/) "This support will be dedicated towards Blender core development, to maintain and continuously improve foundational features like the Blender Python API, which enables developers and artists alike to extend and improve the software for custom workflows." From Anthropics article: (https://www.anthropic.com/news/claude-for-creative-work) "[The] [b]lender [connector] offers a natural-language interface to its Python API, allowing users to explore and understand complex setups and making it easier to access Blender’s documentation." I get how this could be the start of a process which would eventually lead to the enshitification of blender but while the AI is an optional plugin I think its okay?? Yes, we don't live in the reality where blender is fully funded by donations but dismissing the notion by saying it wont exist without bigtech is dumb. First, its an opensource project, it will live on with contributors and forks Second, There are foss projects that were literally saved by donations, Thunderbird got a second life with that little donate pop-up notification. Blender could do the same. #blender #foss #bigtech #opensource

why are people upset about blender getting funding from anthropic? because "AI"? Meta, Wacom, Nvidia, Microsoft, AMD, Adobe, Apple, and Netflix weren't scary enough but Anthropic does it? :dragnthaenk: #blender

More concerned that on Blender Today they literally said Anthropic donating money is just like any other company that contributes to Blender. I think they are going to find out that isn't the case to users. Smacks of, at best, ignorance, at worst, just lying to the community. I don't see anyone else on the patron list that is even close to the political landmine Anthropic is. #Blender

Money is, *waves hand*, helpful; but just a thing. It's not valuable in itself, only in what things it can be transacted to get people to do for you. If you trade inspiration for transactional power, then you no longer need to lead people, just money. Like the only two questions I'd get from anyone with even basic #blender skills would be: Can I take it for a spin?in a BenchmarkWhere did you get that one and how?And I'm shure most won't even ask that question as long as it's not obviously stolen merch that'll put them in a slammer...
