Important note about ideal amplifiers in electronics >Amplifier is the generic term used to describe a circuit which produces and increased version of its input signal. Baking egg shells, as one does. For most of my life I added these to holes dug for tomatoes (because Mom), but I've since learned that that has no effect at all because the calcium carbonate doesn't really dissociate in real time unless you dose it with acids. Same reason I've stopped adding them to the compost. Happy birthday to pharmaceutical #chemist Alice Ball (1892-1916) who developed 1st effective treatment for #leprosy. Just been helping my son with chemistry, and accidentally flipped the narrative. He was looking at the Haber–Bosch process for making ammonia. I asked him about what ammonia's good for, the timing of the development, the timing of World War 1... He was so suddenly interested like he's never been interested in chemistry before. Then we got onto older ways of extracting nitrates from urine, something that Germany also had an advantage in because they drank so much beer. And then to the initial extraction of phosphorus. And then to calculating that, if only one person were involved, it'd take about a decade of collecting urine to replicate Brand and Kunckel's work. Apparently the chem teacher never talks about things like this. Even though we've been talking about the importance of doing so since the 1990s, and it's supposedly REQUIRED by the national curriculum. #school #chemistry #histSci #histSciTech

Hey, can I get a #chemist on the line? Maybe one with #cosmetic or #polymer knowledge? So, I have psoriatic arthritis, and a manifestation is a degradation of my nails. And I was looking into a product, which is advertised as "beneficial" to one's nails, which is not a thing associated with manicure products. It is a #uv cured gel, but rubberized in some way. Here's the thing, all of these "gel" or uv cured products appear to be #resin. Am I wrong in assuming that both long term exposure to resin and UV is incredibly dangerous? When I've done resin work, I've been fully masked and gloved and all of the safety sheets say to avoid skin contact. I stopped working with it because of safety and environmental concerns. in the early 70s i was in the early years of #highschool. by pure luck of timing, my year was the first or second to be part of the substantial overhaul of nsw secondary #education #syllabus & structure most notably, ahead of us we had the School Certificate in 4th Form / Year 10 [the latter nomenclature also being part of the new paradigm], & the Higher School Certificate in Year 12. The hitherto Leaving Certificate became a historical artefact. regarding the new syllabus, wrt #science, for Years 7 - 10 we could choose 2unit Geology or Biology, plus 2unit #Physics and #Chemistry, or... 4unit Multistrand Science [Physics + Chemistry + Geology or Biology]. i chose 4uMS, with the G option [our class for which being small as most kids picked B] as part of the new syllabus we had newly published textbooks, & all the science ones were beaut... many friendly sketches pictorialising many of the concepts & formulae, which were a breath of fresh air compared to the old style in the P+C part of the strand, we were taught something that became a central tenet of all the following decades of my life... logical thinking n The Scientific Method. for this, we were introduced to the fabulous, eternal...
