🔥 NEW: Ecologist Olivia Sanderfoot at #Cornell is building a new field she calls smoke #ecology, asking how #wildfire smoke affects birds even hundreds of kilometers from any flames.
#Birds breathe roughly twice as much air as #humans per breath, using rigid lungs and air sacs, so smoke hits them harder. Sanderfoot is combining atmospheric #chemistry, satellite #data, and thousands of volunteer nest-box observers to track what birds do when #smoke arrives.
