Great Visual Story on US Marine Sanctuaries and Monuments The largest #conservation areas in the #US are in the #Pacific #Ocean. President Trump is rolling back their protections. Last year, President Trump opened parts of the Pacific Islands Heritage Marine National Monument to allow commercial #fishing beyond 57mi from shore. In June, Trump proclaimed that #commercialfishing be allowed in the deep waters of three other Pacific monuments, including Papahānaumokuākea. https://apps.npr.org/troubled-waters/

🌱 The good environmental news from 2026, because the doom scrolling hides a lot. April was the first month in history where wind and solar beat gas worldwide. Renewables overtook coal as the planet's biggest power source in 2025, and clean energy covered all of the new electricity demand that year. The High Seas Treaty entered into force in January, putting real rules on the parts of the ocean outside any country's borders. Wildlife is coming back too. Black rhinos returned to a Zimbabwe park more than 30 years after poaching wiped them out. Alpine bearded vultures passed 100 breeding pairs and are now self-sustaining. Hawaii's stilt was just downlisted from endangered after 50 years of work. Even a snail declared extinct in 1996 is back on Norfolk Island, 1,300 strong. Cautious optimism is the honest take. Emissions are still way too high and too many species are still in trouble. But this year's wins are measurable, and they prove the fight is winnable. https://ember-energy.org/latest-updates/for-the-first-time-wind-and-solar-generated-more-electricity-than-gas-worldwide-in-april-2026/ https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/black-rhino-reintroduction-matusadona #ClimateHope #Conservation #Renewables

The latest edition of the #PBS News show Horizons has an excellent piece on a science study published in Nature last month that found that over half of migratory birds globally are now in decline. Most of the show is a thoughtful interview with the lead author of that research, Peter Marra. The interview is quite sobering, although I appreciate Peter's hopeful response that birds have rebounded from stupid things we've done before (over-hunting of egrets and herons for feathers for hats, and widespread use of DDT insecticides on farms). Watch to the end for information on another recent science study showing that bird watching is good for our brains. 😀 I've also put a link below to an article on #TheConversation that Peter wrote with a co-author about their migratory bird research. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/video/horizons/2026/07/the-alarming-decline-of-bird-populations-and-why-humans-should-care https://theconversation.com/more-than-half-of-earths-migratory-bird-species-are-declining-heres-how-we-can-still-save-them-287947 #birds #conservation #MigratoryBirds #nature #biodiversity

How to stitch a massive wildlife corridor through the Rocky Mountains "The Yellowstone to Yukon Conservation Initiative (Y2Y) is trying to create a giant corridor across the Rocky Mountains from the Greater Yellowstone ecosystem in the U.S. to Canada’s Yukon Territory in the north, stretching 3,400 kilometers (2,100 miles) and spanning five U.S. states, two Canadian provinces and at least 75 Indigenous territories." "The conservation world is now prioritizing connectivity, recognizing the critical need to re-link the landscape to allow animals to move to find food, water, a mate — or migrate." https://news.mongabay.com/2026/07/how-to-stitch-a-massive-wildlife-corridor-through-the-rocky-mountains #Wildlife #Conservation #Biodiversity #Environment

It’s fantastic to learn that tiger numbers are surging, the result of many years of conservation being done right in Nepal and China. https://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/blog/tiger-population-surges-past-400-in-one-of-the-greatest-wildlife-comebacks-of-our-time/ #nature #PBSNature #wildlife #tigers #BigCats #conservation

NATIONAL TIGER DAY!!!! RAWR!!!! The tigers never asked anybody to save them, and they sure as hell never asked to get squeezed onto twenty leftover acres by some mining outfit's quarterly report. They don't know they're a symbol. They just keep walking their shrinking ground like it still belongs to them — because it does — and somewhere in Sumatra tonight, a person with a headlamp and a machete is out there making damn sure that's still true for one more night, for free, because somebody has to, and she decided it was going to be her. #Nature #ClimateHope #Rewilding #Seagrass #Conservation #Solidarity #News #Photography #Environment #Hope #Wildlife #Restoration https://twp.ai/4huO17
