💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🐘💩 In a 15-year field #experiment at #Mpala, #Kenya, researchers built fences to keep #elephants out and watched what happened. Without elephant dung to eat, dung #beetle populations collapsed, resulting in 23% fewer species and 67% fewer individuals. The #study, led by Finote Gijsman, is the first large-scale #demonstration that protecting elephants also protects everything that depends on them. 👉 https://news.mongabay.com/short-article/2026/06/removal-of-african-elephants-causes-coextinction-of-dung-beetles-study-finds/ #dungbeetles #ecology #conservation #savanna #ecosystem #insects #biodiversity #science #africa

Seeds from the last surviving wild Dendroseris neriifolia tree are now stored in Kew Gardens' Millennium Seed Bank as researchers work to find ways to reintroduce the species into the wild. https://www.livescience.com/planet-earth/scientists-race-to-collect-the-last-seeds-from-a-critically-endangered-tree-before-it-goes-extinct Sad, but at least there's some hope.... #ecology #Kew #rees #conservation #mass_extinction

TURTLE (OR TORTOISE) TUESDAY ☀️ In the southern Sahara, where degraded, baked, crusted soil prevented any seedlings to establish, ecological restorationists dispatched 500 "ecosystem engineers." More commonly known as African spurred tortoises, the ecotechnicians went to work digging burrows to avoid the desert heat and cold. 🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢 🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢🐢 🐢🐢🐢 🌧️ Water stayed in the soil. Plants grew. Insects and microorganisms moved in, followed by birds and small mammals. 🛰️ From space the region even looks alive. ✅ This is another example of a successful low-tech nature-focused rewilding effort. (Recall my incessant beaver updates.) https://www.thecooldown.com/outdoors/sahara-desert-ecosystem-restoration-tortoises/ #TurtleTuesday #Environment #Rewilding #EcologicalRestoration #EnvironmentalRestoration #Conservation #Biodiversity

Long before modern science, humanity viewed biodiversity as sacred. A new analysis of global rock art reveals that ancient societies placed wildlife at the center of daily and symbolic life, raising urgent questions about our era’s rapid destruction of nature. Read this analysis by Kerry Bowman. https://mongabay.cc/vugDZE #Conservation

📰 Mangroves clean up $8.7 billion of nitrogen pollution annually, per study. Nitrogen pollution is a known problem in agriculture, other human activities, and wreaks havoc in aquatic ecosystems. ➕ Add this to mangroves being valuable carbon sinks, coastal defense against storm surges, a buffer against erosion, among other benefits. https://www.livescience.com/planet-earth/plants/mangroves-clean-up-usd8-7-billion-of-nitrogen-pollution-every-year-study-finds #SolarPunkSunday #Environment #Conservation #Pollution #Biodiversity #Mangroves #CoastalConservation

Our favorite headline today: "Shark lasers could help save vulnerable species." From @popsci@universeodon.com: "By merging optical technology and geochemistry, a group of researchers are gaining far more accurate information on the snub-nosed speartooth shark’s age, as well as the health of its environment." https://flip.it/eZ06D_ #Sharks #Animals #Science #Ocean #Conservation

While Washington guts every protection that ever restrained a corporation, a Green Party MP in Wellington walks into parliament and says: a whale is a person. The Tohorā Oranga Bill would grant Pacific whales freedom of movement, habitat restoration, protected social structures. 22% of New Zealand's marine mammals face extinction. https://twp.ai/9OV23c #Nature #Law #WhalePersonhood #NewZealand #IndigenousRights #TohorāOranga #EnvironmentalLaw #PacificOcean #Conservation #lgbtqia #trans

“This was the moment we had been waiting for,” Erwin Alamsyah Siregar, executive director of Indonesian conservation group Tangguh Hutan Khatulistiwa, or TaHuKah, told The Associated Press. “We are very grateful that the canopy here provides benefits for orangutan #conservation efforts.” #SumatraOrangutan #WildlifeConservation #wildlife #habitat #HumanEncroachment #HabitatFragmentation

5 canopy bridges were installed each with a camera trap, carefully positioned after surveys of #orangutan nests, forest cover & animal movement. The structures were designed to support the orangutan’s weight—no small feat for the world’s largest tree‑dwelling mammal. The program is closely monitored, with camera traps on every bridge & regular patrols to prevent forest encroachment. Conservationists hope more #orangutans will follow the first pioneer. #SumatraOrangutan #conservation #wildlife

Platypuses need threatened species recognition in NSW, researcher says "The species was only "hanging on, not thriving" in NSW and the Murray-Darling Basin." "There's no state or national monitoring framework for platypuses...Dr Bino said platypuses had survived Australia's natural cycles for millions of years, but were now struggling to adapt to human-driven changes. We've been disrupting the natural flow regime and fragmenting and isolating platypus populations." "Platypus are pretty much wiped out from the mainland in South Australia. They used to occur all along the Murray but that's no longer the case." >> https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-04-27/platypuses-should-be-threatened-species-in-nsw-researcher-says/106520128 #platypuses #conservation #habitat #rivers #NSW #monotremes #MDB #ThreatenedSpecies #biodiversity #water #pollution #sprawl #ImperviousSurfaces #roads #runoff #drowning #WipeoutAU

Endangered because it sells? 🌱 With only ~1k left, Windsor's elephant's foot is trapped: "sold to be saved." The "endangered" label ironically acts as an ad, making it a trendy houseplant. Once caught in the economy's gears, hitting the brakes is tough. Human ego makes things difficult. Can we ever change this massive "economy"? (Tap blog toggles for English!)
