#NativeGardenDesign in #Australia: A 2026 Guide How to design a native Australian garden the right way — climate zones, the 5 native garden styles, plant categories, common mistakes, and what it costs in 2026. 17 April 2026 Excerpt: "Why design native (the practical case) - #WaterConsumption. A well-established native garden needs roughly 30-60% less supplemental water than an equivalent ornamental scheme. In #drought-restricted areas, this is the difference between a garden that survives summer and one that doesn't. - Climate match. Indigenous species evolved with your specific climate. They handle your typical heatwaves, frost events, soil pH, and rainfall pattern without intervention. - #Biodiversity. Indigenous plants support indigenous insects (which feed birds, lizards, small mammals), provide nectar for #NativeBees and #honeyeaters, and offer nesting habitat. A 12-month-old native garden is visibly more biologically active than a typical ornamental scheme. - Lower input over time. Less feeding, less spraying, less ongoing intervention once established (typically 12-24 months). - #Bushfire considerations. Some native species (low-flammability plants) are actively recommended in bushfire-prone areas; others (high-oil species) should be avoided or kept away from structures. Native ≠ automatically fire-safe; design matters." Garden update... One corn stalk got a bit dinged from the recent storm (as did my black hollyhocks), but everything else is doing well... Squash is climbing the fence, beans are climbing the corn, and a itty bitty ear of corn is forming in one of the stalks! Two of the sunflowers are in bloom, and the bees are digging them! #SolarPunkSunday #ThreeSistersGarden #HomeGardens #GardeningForPollinators

#HintonburgON - #Ottawa #TransLibrary "The Ottawa Trans Library is a library and community space for trans and gender non-conforming folks. It consists of a lending library on #trans and #GenderIssues and by trans and #GenderDiverse authors and a small #OttawaTransArchives. Visit the OTL at 1104 Somerset St. West in Hintonburg. Hours are: Saturday 12 pm to 5pm Monday, and Thursday 3 pm to 7 pm Wednesday 12 pm to 5 pm In addition to regular hours, the OTL holds events at other times. For complete info, visit the library site at https://ottawatranslibrary.ca/ You can also check out the front page appearance in the Ottawa Citizen. The lending library consists of books by trans authors, as well as historical, important and interesting works on trans issues and people. I am also interested in acquiring transphobic titles. If you have a collection of trans books or periodicals gathering dust in your basement that you would consider #deaccessioning (that’s a respectful term for 'getting rid of'), please get in touch with me. We will also be building the collection through purchase. The library has four separate sitting areas, a free coffee and tea station and free WiFi, of course. You don’t need to borrow a book. Meet your friends or talk to the librarian. A safe space with no pressure or judgments. There is only one rule: be respectful of others." So, it's nice when folks with money can install solar, heat pumps, buy EVs, and be all high and mighty about being "Green". But for most people, those things are out of reach. We need #ClimateSolutions that are accessible, affordable, and don't trash the environment! #SolarPunk #SolarPunkSunday #PracticalSolarPunk #Earth4All

#Virginia - #ClimateChange and Its Effect on #Gardening – 2025 By Elaine Mills, Extension Master Gardener, January 22, 2025 Climate-Conscious Gardening "To quote David W. Wolfe, Professor of Plant & Soil Ecology at #CornellUniversity, 'We are in the unfortunate situation of being the first generation of gardeners, ever, who cannot rely on historical weather records to tell us what our climate is, or what to expect in the future.' "Join Master Gardeners in the Arlington/Alexandria unit of Virginia #CooperativeExtension in a series of monthly articles updated from their original posting in 2021 as we explore the topic of climate change and practical actions individuals can take in their home landscapes in response. This month, we’ll present an overview." How to help your garden withstand #ClimateChange #HealthySoils and diverse, perennial plants can help your garden beds survive #ExtremeWeather like #floods and #droughts. March 13, 2026 "The days are getting longer, and spring is around the corner. For many home gardeners, it’s a time of hope and anticipation. "So it’s the perfect time to plan how to help your flower beds thrive as climate change brings more extreme and unpredictable weather. "Marsden: 'Flooding, droughts, heat, cold, all the extreme weather we’re seeing is going to impact plants.' "That’s Christy Marsden of the University of Minnesota #ClimateAdaptation Partnership. "She says one of the most important things you can do is get your soil tested and then take steps to improve your soil health – for example, by adding #compost. Healthier soil retains more water during droughts, and it’s less likely to erode during heavy storms. "Marsden also suggests growing a wider mix of flowers than you might have grown before, with varieties that thrive in a range of conditions. "And she recommends relying more on perennial plants, which come back every year, and less on annuals. Marsden: “Perennials are more able to withstand some of those extremes because they have deeper roots. They’re more established.” "So while climate change is a challenge, she says by being flexible and trying new things, you can still grow a beautiful garden in a warming world." Corridors, not culls, offer solution to Southern #Africa’s growing #elephant population

by Ryan Truscott, 11 Dec 2025

"Situated in the northwestern corner of the #SobbeWildlifeConservancy, in #Namibia’s long, narrow #Zambezi region, the #SobbeCorridor provides a link for elephants moving between #Botswana, #Zambia and #Angola."

Key points:

  • Elephant populations in Southern Africa are stable or growing, but the space available for them is not.
  • Often, elephant populations are constrained, increasing their impact on the environment or surrounding communities, and triggering calls for controversial solutions, like culls or contraception.
  • But studies in a region that hosts 50% of Africa’s remaining savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana) show how the animals make use of wildlife corridors to move between protected areas and neighboring countries.
  • Encouraging elephants to migrate can help relieve overpopulation in some areas, but any corridor invariably intersects with human communities, making it both vital ecological infrastructure and a social challenge.
