#onthisday Alice Lidell was born on this date back in 1852. This was the girl who would find fame as the eponymous heroine of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass. Check out the acrostic poem from the end of the second book spelling her name out in full: A boat beneath a sunny sky, Lingering onward dreamily In an evening of July— Children three that nestle near, Eager eye and willing ear, Pleased a simple tale to hear— Long has paled that sunny sky: Echoes fade and memories die. Autumn frosts have slain July. Still she haunts me, phantomwise, Alice moving under skies Never seen by waking eyes. Children yet, the tale to hear, Eager eye and willing ear, Lovingly shall nestle near. In a Wonderland they lie, Dreaming as the days go by, Dreaming as the summers die: Ever drifting down the stream— Lingering in the golden gleam— Life, what is it but a dream? It occurs to me, even if I was writing this on the anniversary of her death, not her birth, this is one little girl who’s never going to die. She’ll live on for ever in the books which tell her story. #bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #onthisday #HowtoSucceed#Author #Novel

Machiavelli was born on this date back in 1469. My anonymous Evil Criminal Mastermind in How to Succeed as a Supervillain by Following the Evil Overlord List considers him to be essential reading for all aspiring villains. He reckons that Machiavelli’s The Art of War, and The Prince, along with General Sun Tzu’s book, also entitled The Art of War, comprise the three erudite Big Books of war, conflict, and dissent. They’re all books which deserve to be added to the Evil Overlord’s required reading list, and he’s penned an addition to the beloved List which suggests: all those aspiring to wickedness are strongly advised to read, study, and memorise both versions of the Art of War along with The Prince and, once one has done so, read them again until you know them by heart. Then, and only then, will you be ready to take over the world. #bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #onthisday #HowtoSucceed#Author #Novel

Wheel of Time book seven complete! Now on to Path of Daggers. But not tonight. I’m very quickly approaching all new material because I believe I was partway thru eight when I stopped reading before. #WheelOfTime #Bookstodon #Reading

Finished Mort by Terry Pratchett today. I enjoyed the book, thought it was good! It really needed more Death - he was such a stand out character! The book is full of funny and intelligent quips! I found the pacing of the plot to be a bit all over the place, though. #books #booksky #book #bookstodon #reading #readingcommunity

@sophiajanehayden_author@indieauthors.social I nearly always include a prologue, but I mix up the ways it works to keep things fresh. I’ve used one to introduce the character to the reader, to introduce some information the protagonist isn’t aware of, started off one book from the perspective of a character who’s more of a bystander than a participant and, in one book, thrown my protagonist straight into the action, in medias res, as it were. #bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #How to Succeed… #Author #Novel

On this day, in 1536 – Anne Boleyn, Queen of England, had the book thrown at her. She was arrested and imprisoned on charges of adultery, incest, treason and witchcraft. From a writer’s perspective I believe most commentators have missed one important fact. Recently historians were said to have found a hidden detail in one of her portraits which was a rebuttal of the charges of witchcraft. This centres on the allegation that she’d been polydactylic (from Greek polys, many, and daktylos, finger), meaning having an extra digit, implying she was involved in witchcraft. All in all though, it’s probably worth mentioning how unlikely it was that Henry would have married her in the first place if she’d really been in possession of a superfluous pinkie… Bleedin’ obvious when you think about it! #bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #How to Succeed… #Author #Novel

In the hunt for reviewers, an ARC of my #solarpunk novella is now on NetGalley via @SFWA@wandering.shop This is the story of a country that decentralizes power, getting rid of presidents, politicians, ministers, and authoritarians. Instead, every citizen actively participates in running the country in a direct democracy. And there's no capitalism. Help me spread my idea of the future, get it on netgalley or send me a DM. https://www.netgalley.com/catalog/book/837516 #books #bookstodon #sff #scifi #writing #writingcommunity

Just finished reading this fever dream of a fairy tale. 100% recommend. Beautifully plotted and lushly & lyrically written, although some elements aren't entirely modern in sensibility ( witches = evil, magicians = good, and the story needed a Hero to resolve it). Main character was believable in spite of being a unicorn. Loved it. PS Any idea how I get it back to its library in Kinshasa? #bookstodon #books #amreading #fantasy #library

Happy Beltane, everybody. Today is the third festival celebrated by neopagans and other like-minded people during the Wheel of the Year. Here’re a couple of fun facts you might not be familiar with: Often regarded as a fire festival, people attending walk around or between bonfires and sometimes leap over the flames or embers. At this time, household fires are doused and then relit from the Beltane bonfire. The aos sí (often referred to as spirits or fairies) are thought to be especially active at Beltane and the goal of many Beltane rituals is their appeasement. Many scholars see the aos sí as remnants of the pagan gods and nature spirits of times gone by. At dawn or before sunrise on Beltane, maidens would roll in the dew or wash their faces with it, as morning dew was thought to bring good luck and health. It’s also thought that a man who washed his face with soap and water on Beltane will grow long whiskers on his face. #bookstodon #WritersOfMastodon #How to Succeed… #Author #Novel

  1. Husband of the Year by M.A. Wardell. A satisfactory end to the Teachers in Love, major improvement over the third one (which I hated), but not as good as the first two (I don’t care about babies so). Would have enjoyed a triple wedding instead. Good series overall, gay male romance written by a gay male ;) #Bookstodon

  1. The Editor by Steven Rowley. A new (gay) writer’s book catches the attention of Jaqueline Onassis, who forces him to deal with his own relationship with his mother. So much better than his Guncle books! #Bookstodon

  1. Fraternity by Andy Mientus. It’s 1991. A queer secret society at a boarding school finds a book with dark magic, and things go wrong. Really enjoyed this one and hope Mientus writes more in the future when not acting. #Bookstodon

  1. Exquisite Things by Abdi Nazemian This wants to be V.E. Schwab crossed with Oscar Wilde and sorta works sorta doesn’t. In the 1890s a queer teen becomes immortal and in 1920 Boston makes his crush immortal and they try to make things to work in homophobic Thatcher 1980 and meet again in 2025. #Bookstodon

  1. Last First Kiss by Julian Winters. I enjoyed getting back into the world of I Think They Love You, but this one wasn’t as good. Jordan once had an awkward teen kiss and runs into the guy (his cousin’s BFF) and the sparks are still there. I want Javi’s story next please! #Bookstodon

  1. The Celebrants by Steven Rowley. A group of uni friends agree to give each other funerals while they’re still alive after their friend dies. Really disappointed in this one. Characters were insufferable, and I didn’t care about anyone other than the Jordans. #Bookstodon

  1. Always the Almost by Edward Underhill. A trans male teen pianist falls for the new guy after a breakout. I was disappointed since I loved Underhill’s other books, but this one was just kinda there for me. I did love Stefania, the piano teacher though. #Bookstodon
