Last week, I organised a Bioblitz to kick off collecting as many #iNaturalist observations as possible before they kick us out. The collection continues, so I encourage locals to go enjoy the park while they can while contributing to iNat so we can have a better baseline of what #biodiversity exists and is at risk of being lost. Here's my write-up about the event: https://stragu.codeberg.page/posts/2026-05-27_barrambin-biodiversity/ And instructions to take part: https://stragu.codeberg.page/posts/2026-05-20_barrambin-bioblitz/ 6/? #BNE #Meanjin #Magandjin #Brisbane #Rstats

In 24 hours, we managed to upload 232 observations. One week later, we've added 45 species to the list. There are now 348 taxa recorded at #Barrambin : https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/barrambin-victoria-park But there's lots more to explore and record, so if you're a local, please have a wander and contribute your snaps to the database! Every #iNaturalist observation that falls in that area makes it into the list automatically. A stadium doesn't belong here. 7/? #biodiversity #BNE #Meanjin #Magandjin #Brisbane

Even if you're not local, you can contribute by identifying observations to refine the data: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/identify?project_id=288305 Eventually, observations that reach a consensus end up in other databases, like the Atlas of Living Australia. This is a report from the ALA for the same area. It lists 21 "threatened species". https://archive.org/download/ALA_area_report_Barrambin_2026-05-28/areaReport1779975680564.pdf 8/? #conservation #biodiversity #iNaturalist #Barrambin #VictoriaPark

Today I did my monthly biodiversity survey by bike along the Summit Road of the Port Hills of Ōtautahi-Christchurch, NZ. And, along it I found the first ever Canterbury record, and second South Island record, of the toatoa bud gall mite, *Aceria victoriae*. 😀 These native mites make distinctive galls on the NZ native plant, toatoa (*Haloragis erecta*). Yet, after they were described as a species from specimens collected in Wellington in 1956/57, nobody recorded them. That is, until Nicholas Martin found them in Auckland in 2012. Nicholas Martin put out the call for entomologists to look for them, yet only a few more were found, and all in Auckland. I looked and couldn't find them around Christchurch. Then, last year, Lisa Bennett on #iNaturalist found them in Wellington and Joseph Knight found them on Otago Peninsula. Inspired by their finds, I was looking carefully for them today and found one plant with the galls. It's a mystery why they've been so cryptic as their host plant is common. I think it underscores how little we still know about the little creatures that live in NZ with us. https://www.inaturalist.nz/projects/hunt-for-the-toatoa-bud-gall-mite #NZ #NaturalHistory #entomology #mites #discovery #CitizenScience

I find inaturalist maps pretty fascinating. I'll be viewing a botanist profiles, viewing mapped observations, and learn something new on a regular basis. For instance, I've been seeing this evergreen Monkey-Puzzle tree around on random occasions (once you see it once its hard not to see it), as people plant them for landscaping additions in the pnw, and realized its a wild presence is now endangered in Chile and Argentina...which is a major downer...but still interesting nonetheless. Such a fascinating species. https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/126404-Araucaria-araucana #inaturalist #botany #trees #endangered #Argentina #Chile
