Joe Pye weed (Eutrochium maculatum) But who is Joe Pye? It seems to be the anglophone name of a very interesting Mohican, Joseph Shauquethqueat, living at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, in Massachusetts and New York. Not clear he had anything to do with the plant, maybe only by association. A scholarly article about botany, history and First Nations, with Latin names and a critical eye. Five days past Lughnasadh, and the land is showing it. Goldenrod cracking open along the highway shoulders. Elderberries turning from green to blood-dark. The first joe-pye weed standing purple and shoulder-high in the ditches. The Perseids already scratching the northeast sky, building toward the peak. The light leaves a few minutes earlier each evening now, so slightly that you feel it in your shoulders before you see it in the sky — the way you always know a room has emptied before you turn to look. *Tha an talamh a' cumail cunntais.* The earth keeps the count.   1. I got to talk to my dear young Iranian friend for almost an hour yesterday. It was such a joy to see her lovely face and hear her reassuring me that she and her family really are okay.

  2. A beautiful monarch butterfly spent some time flying around the marsh milkweed we planted 2 years ago. Such a joy to see.

  3. This pretty coneflower (echinacea), left over from my patch of wildflowers that is almost taken over by common milkweed, was discovered by a leaf cutter bee, late this afternoon.

Simple pleasures.

#Wildflowers #NativePlants #Iowa Another walk over to the pond. If I keep this up, I can revive the #DailyWalk hashtag. In addition to the wildflowers by the pond and in the Hillside Prairie, I also saw frogs, damsel flies, monarch butterflies, and a great blue heron.

People go to Iceland, and rave about the majestic scenery. Well, that is true, but the array of wildflowers that come out in the summer is also amazing.

I present to you, a female hummingbird enjoying some nectar from the massive cardinal flowers in our flowerbed! It's hard to tell, but this hummingbird was maybe five feet from me, which is the closest I've ever come to a hummingbird (unless I'm filling their feeder, then they dive-bomb me 😅). And the cardinal flowers... I'm not kidding when I say they're massive. Some of them are at least four feet tall, which is outrageous. #Nature #Birds #Hummingbird #Wildflowers #Bloomscrolling

Not a flower as such, but a rather nice Robin's Pincushion, a feathery gall caused by the reaction of its Rose host (Sweet Briar, in this case, I think) to the larvae of a gall wasp. #wildflowerHour #wildflowers #wasps

18/07/2026 - A few lovely wild flowers I saw on my walk along the coast at St Cyrus for #WildFlowerHour. The wild flowers are different to the ones I see round Aberdeen 50 miles north.
