Just one new garden species so far on this warm, overcast, & drizzly day. But it's a doozy ... 🙂
This is a white plume moth (Pterophorus pentadactyla). It has many names in German, but I like Schlehengeistchen, or little blackthorn ghost 👻
Hard to capture, hidden in the foliage, but well worth the effort 👍

This poor wee guy, a tree bumblebee, landed on our patio table and looked exhausted so I mixed up some sugar water solution and after a good slurp, coaxed him onto a piece of card and moved him to our azalea. Obviously I had to take the opportunity to use the focus-stack setting on my OM System Tough TG7 to record his visit for posterity.

I follow a lot of nature photographers on different platforms. At times, seeing all the wonderful photos of crazy bright and colourful species of insects, spiders, and birds from all across the globe makes the fauna in central Europe appear a bit lame. But then I grab my own camera, go out, and notice pretty quickly that that's far from the truth. The photos here just show a few of the spiders I come across without even leaving my garden. There might not be quite as much colour around, but there are tons of fascinating, beautiful, and diverse species all around!

Well, I didn't have that on my May Day bingo card – a predatory jumping spider impersonating a noble worker ant 😱
This is likely Leptorchestes berolinensis (🇩🇪 Großer Ameisenspringer), & from its shape & the way it was running up & down the rose leaves, I was sure it was a large ant.
Then I downloaded the photos & counted the legs 😳

Finally! 🎉
I've been seeing male orange tip butterflies (Anthocharis cardamines) for weeks now, but they never stopped to be photographed.
Even this one today, on the Königstuhl, was flitting from flower to flower, making it hard to get close with my iPhone. But still ... 🙂
In German, they have the beautiful name Aurorafalter.

Despite the continued cool weather & apparent lack of much going on, lunchtime in the garden proved decently productive.
First, a small groundhopper nymph, likely genus Tetrix. Being more specific is tricky, but T. undulata, the common groundhopper (🇩🇪 Gemeine Dornschrecke) is my best guess. Alternatively T. tenuicornis or T. subulata.

Next, one of the bigger & buzzier flies in our garden – the common tachnid (Tachina fera; 🇩🇪 Schwarzfühler-Borstenfliege). Closely related to Nowickia ferox, which we also have, the latter being generally darker – hope to see one later.
I didn't manage to get a great head-on shot, but it very proudly displayed its bristly arse to me 🤷♂️🙂

First, this red mason bee (Osmia bicornis; 🇩🇪 Rote Mauerbiene) was hanging around the new bee hotel, & may have been responsible for filling & capping one or more of the wooden holes & bamboo tubes.
Osmia bicornis are solitary bees & important spring pollinators.

Next a new bee species for me, albeit rather distinctive.
This is an ashy mining bee (Andrena cineraria; 🇩🇪 Aschgraue Sandbiene or Grauschwarze Düstersandbiene).
Another solitary bee species, albeit one that digs holes in the ground for its nest, rather than using wood.

Finally & rather more ominously for the bees, an early sighting of an Asian or yellow-legged hornet (Vespa velutina; 🇩🇪 Asiatische Hornisse).
Predators on bees, they've become so prevalent in Europe in recent years, the German govt has largely given up on trying to eradicate them. Reporting them is no longer mandatory in some states.
