Less than 3 weeks to go until the UK release of my debut book THE WORLD BENEATH OUR FEET! And only a month later, it'll hit bookshops across the US and Canada 🥰 There's still time to reserve your own copy of the hardcover (preorders are super important!), so you can enjoy it on the day of release! And if you're coming to one of my UK events, I'll very happily sign your copy. I can't stop looking at my early copies, they're just so pretty. Though I can't claim the credit for the book's exquisite presentation: the production team at Hodder Press have given everything to this - generously using gold foil to further accent the stunning cover art by Holly Ovenden. They even accommodated my last-minute request to use an earthworm illustration by the wonderful Morgane Merien for each chapter's section breaks! Reserve your copy today, and come join me on an awe-inspiring journey into the mysterious world of soil! #TheWorldBeneathOurFeet #Science #Nature #NatureBook #booksbooksbooks #Soil #SoilBiodiversity #Author

We independently tested hundreds of homes in eastern Omaha and found toxic levels of lead in soil throughout — including in yards that the EPA remediated years ago. Here’s how we did it. https://www.propublica.org/article/omaha-nebraska-lead-testing-superfund-methodology?utm_source=mastodon&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=mastodon-post #Science #Research #Omaha #Nebraska #Environment #Pollution #Soil

The cosmopolitan 'moss' springtail (Neanura muscorum) navigating a miniature forest of fungi on a decaying log. But it isn't alone — all those transparent blobs on its body are in fact curled-up, hitchhiking nematode worms (you can see these better in the second photo)! Much like the baby mite in my last post, these tiny worms are using a larger animal to help them disperse to new environments. It's thought that this 'phoretic' behaviour might be a stepping stone in how parasitism evolved in some nematodes. Read all about the incredible ways soil animals have adapted to the challenges of life, in my upcoming book #TheWorldBeneathOurFeet, which lands just one month from now! #SoilBiodiversity #SoilEcology #Nature #Entomology #Soil

"There is a long-standing concern that land degradation reduces agricultural productivity, particularly in the long run." Empirically, this translates to a drop in agricultural productivity on the scale of hundreds of thousands of tonnes per year. After the #extremeHeat in France, the danger of #wildfires is enormous. #Heatwave and #soil #dryness didn't change much for the plants this week - with "cool" 30°C and full sunshine. #Trees try to resist by getting "dried" #leaves. At a certain heat temp., the process starts at the exterieur like burnings. Then the green vanishes to the centre until #photosynthesis is stopped. If the plant can't get soon enough rain to regenerate, it can die. Food crops die before trees. #oak #ClimateDiary

It's only two months now until the UK/Commonwealth and EU release of The World Beneath our Feet, and the US release is just a month after that! It's all feeling very real all of a sudden. I'll be back in the UK in September, with lots of exciting book promotion on the horizon. Pre-orders are SUPER IMPORTANT, so if you or someone you care about would like a book about soil and the incredible life it contains, please go reserve a copy from your preferred book seller now! (PS: It's got lots of my macrophotography in it too) #TheWorldBeneathOurFeet #Soil #SoilBiodiversity #Macrophotography #Nature #NatureBook #booksbooksbooks #AuthorLife #NaturalHistory #NonFiction

Rain has totally ghosted us on this side. Thankfully, our banana plantation is still doing well😊 2 days ago we removed unwanted weeds, and we are preparing to harvest our maize which is now ready. We plan to use the maize stalks as mulches, which will help keep moisture in the #soil, protect the roots from strong sunshine, and improve soil health during this dry period #regenerativefarming #hiddenhunger #foodsecurityinnovations #sustainableproject

Adventures of a tiny white gummy bear. When you're a springtail this smol, microfungi are perfect drinking vessels, and slime mold sporangia are towering trees. I've not been out with my camera much lately; with parenthood, work and book edits taking up all my time. But I hope to pick back up with the macrophotography very soon! New Zealand's hidden soil treasures await discovery! #Macrophotography #NaturePhotography #Soil #SoilBiodiversity #Entomology #TheWorldBeneathOurFeet

💁🏻‍♀️ TIL: 🍄🌍 Scientists mapped arbuscular #mycorrhizal #fungi – the #underground fungal threads that connect #plant roots. Analyzing over 16,000 #soil cores from 322 studies, they found the network stretches 110 quadrillion(!) km in the topsoil, long enough to reach the #Sun nearly a billion times. #Grasslands and #prairies hold the densest networks, while #farming reduces fungal density by nearly half. 👉 https://www.sciencealert.com/hidden-web-of-fungus-inside-earth-could-reach-the-sun-a-billion-times #science #ecology #plants #carbon #map #nature #biology #climate #microscopy #research #study

Warming unlocks ancient carbon in Tibetan permafrost, triggering climate tipping point The results revealed a clear and troubling pattern across all warming levels. Even under low to moderate warming, #carbon losses through respiration outpaced photosynthetic carbon gains by 1–16-fold. Warming by +1°C, +2°C, and +4°C increased annual net #CO2 release by 44%, 80%, and 176%, respectively, and the site was a net carbon source before any experimental warming began. "When warming reaches around 2–4°C, the system changes fundamentally," Ding told Phys.org. "Plants begin to reach their thermal and water-stress limits, so photosynthesis declines. At the same time, thaw penetrates deeper into the #soil, exposing old #permafrost carbon that has been frozen and protected for hundreds to thousands of years. Once thawed, microbes can decompose it and release it as CO2." https://phys.org/news/2026-06-ancient-carbon-tibetan-permafrost-triggering.html #TippingPoint #Tibet #Himalaya #Uhhps
