#PlasticPollution in #ShootingRanges and warfare areas - an overlooked #environmental issue Andrés Rodríguez-Seijo, et al. 15 July 2026 Abstract "Shooting ranges and military training fields, including warfare-impacted areas, have been widely recognized as environmentally impacted zones by inorganic and organic #contamination, such as #HeavyMetals, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons or explosive-related compounds. However, the possible contamination by #plastics and #microplastics in soil has been widely overlooked despite potential plastic sources, such as #ShotgunCartridges, #PlasticWads or #landmines. Due to how these activities occur, plastics have remained in the field for decades or centuries, favoring their conversion from macro to microplastics, polluting the soil and water resources. Moreover, shooting and recreational activities such as #airsoft or #paintball practices could also be a substantial source of plastics to ecosystems; once shot, pellets can have conventional or biodegradable plastics in their composition, and there left in the environment, favouring impacts on soil properties. Although some initiatives have emerged to avoid the use of single-use plastics in shotgun ammunition, alternative materials (biodegradable plastics) can also be a potential risk, favouring the heavy metal bioavailability of shot pellets. These emerging pollutants should also be considered in these areas to understand if they could be a potential source of micro- and nanoplastics to the environment and, therefore, an environmental concern that requires changes at industrial and regulatory levels." #health https://radar.avrotros.nl/artikel/zoveel-microplastics-krijg-jij-binnen-door-kauwgom-te-kauwen-62820

"Four years into the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s review of Zyn nicotine pouches, and not long before the agency approved them for sale, an FDA toxicologist ran some informal tests in her kitchen that led her to question whether the agency truly understood the addictive product it was about to green-light." https://www.statnews.com/2026/07/14/zyn-nicotine-pouches-fda-approval-microplastic-risk/ #PublicHealth #tobacco #nicotine #FDA #plastics #microplastics #investigation #longread

@seedsignal@mastodon.social That's true, but an increasing number of manufacturers now make biodegradable #teabags, free of #microplastics, and those are what we buy. Even cheapo supermarket teabags are often biodegradable these days. I like them because I can chuck them into the #compost bin and avoid landfill. The easiest way to reduce exposure to microplastics (launching off at a complete tangent here) is to avoid tumble-drying synthetic clothes. @celesteh@hachyderm.io @badambassador@social.vivaldi.net @fesshole@mastodon.social

What happens to microplastics when swallowed? In earthworms, they do not leave the digestive tract https://phys.org/news/2026-06-microplastics-swallowed-earthworms-digestive-tract.html #environment #plastic #microplastics #PlasticPollution #health

We got the "Stihl FSA 135". With our use it is likely to last for the rest of our life. While it comes with a strimmer head (using nylon wire*) we'll be using it with a metal cutting disk as not to pollute the woodland with untold bits of #microplastics. I'm looking forward to do some testing this weekend :-) *There's no such thing as biodegradable trimmer wire. #podcast tip: the @plastisphere@podcasts.social episode about microplastics in soil: https://anjakrieger.com/2021/04/27/welcome-to-the-plastisphere/ 2/2 #gardening #woodland
